LIBERTY UNIVERSITY Master's Thesis the M26 Pershing
LIBERTY UNIVERSITY Master’s Thesis The M26 Pershing: America’s Forgotten Tank - Developmental and Combat History Author : Reader : Supervisor : Robert P. Hanger Dr. Christopher J. Smith Dr. David L. Snead A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Arts In the Liberty University Department of History May 11, 2018 Abstract The M26 tank, nicknamed the “General Pershing,” was the final result of the Ordnance Department’s revolutionary T20 series. It was the only American heavy tank to be fielded during the Second World War. Less is known about this tank, mainly because it entered the war too late and in too few numbers to impact events. However, it proved a sufficient design – capable of going toe-to-toe with vaunted German armor. After the war, American tank development slowed and was reduced mostly to modernization of the M26 and component development. The Korean War created a sudden need for armor and provided the impetus for further development. M26s were rushed to the conflict and demonstrated to be decisive against North Korean armor. Nonetheless, the principle role the tank fulfilled was infantry support. In 1951, the M26 was replaced by its improved derivative, the M46. Its final legacy was that of being the foundation of America’s Cold War tank fleet. Contents Introduction………………………………………………………………………………………..1 Chapter 1. A Periscope Detection Radar
A PERISCOPE DETECTION RADAR A Periscope Detection Radar Jeffrey J. Ousborne, Dale Griffith, and Rebecca W. Yuan Detection of small cross-sectional periscopes with short, transient exposure periods requires a radar system with a sensitive detection threshold. Airborne radar detection systems were designed to provide such a capability in the open ocean. In littoral regions, however, these systems are manually intensive, and operators are overwhelmed by the numerous objects detected. The Automatic Radar Periscope Detection and Discrimination Program was implemented to automate the detection of transient periscope exposures while maintaining an extremely low false alarm rate. The approach incorporates a high-resolution radar with a two-stage periscope declaration process: conventional target detection with a moderate false alarm rate followed by signature discrimination to reduce the false alarms. Detected objects and persistent ocean clutter spikes are identified and eliminated by their spatial and temporal characteristics that differ from periscope signatures. This article discusses techniques used to achieve a sensitive detection threshold and resultant clutter spike false alarm rates. Theoretical analysis, radar data analysis, and radar emulation results are presented. (Keywords: Antisubmarine warfare, Ocean clutter, Periscope, Radar.) History of Submarine Composites the Use and Contemplated Use Of
History of Submarine Composites The use and contemplated use of composite materials for major submarine components has a rich history within the U.S Navy. Indeed composite materials were once considered the likely choice for building submarine hulls that are subjected to massive compressive loads at extreme depths. As early as the 1960s, cylindrical models were being built and tested in an effort to build a pressure hull with a strength-to-weight ratio superior to high- strength steel. In a 1966 article published in Marine Technology, J.A. Kies surmised “that no type of material has improved as rapidly as reinforced plastic and that, given the necessary funding and research effort, reinforced plastic material suitable for deep research submersibles will be available in five years.” Owing to the end of the Cold War, a composite combatant submarine hull has ever been produced, although research submarines have been. However, critical components external to the pressure hull have been in service for decades. Daniel Spurr in his fact-filled book Heart of Glass, which is a must read for anyone building fiberglass boats today, points to a small, two-man submarine called “the Toy” that had two 15-inch watertight spheres made of fiberglass as “among man’s earliest creations in fiberglass” according to Art Javes who developed the sub for the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. Spurr goes on to show that before the late 1950s, only a handful of builders were producing small runabouts in fiberglass. In 1954 the U.S. Navy developed a fiberglass replacement for the aluminum fairwaters that were fitted on submarines. -
U-Boats Technology Impact
U-boats Technology Impact In 1914, war was in the air. The Archduke Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated in Sarajevo, propelling one European nation after another to choose alliances. It was not long before two sides stood opposed. The Allies, which included the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Japan, and Russia, made up one side. The Central Powers occupied the other side—Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey. Tensions between world powers erupted, and World War I was soon underway. Never before had a war involved such great numbers of soldiers or such advances in technology. President Woodrow Wilson did not want the United States to enter the conflict. He lobbied on behalf of neutrality from 1914 to1917. However, Germany’s use of one type of boat contributed to the decision of the United States to join World War I in 1917. What kind of a vessel could create such an impact? The U-boat. The First Submarines Although submarines such as the German U-boats first had a major impact in World War I, they had been around for a lot longer. In 1578, William Bourne, a British naval writer, described his idea forwooden boat that could enclosed, sunk, and rowed under the surface of the water. But Bourne never actually created such a vessel. The first working submarine did not appear until 1620, when Dutch inventor Cornelis Drebbel built a ship thatsailed 12 to 15 feet below the surface of the Thames River in England.. The outer hull of Drebbel’s craft was made of greased leather over a wooden frame. -
