Snead A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Arts In the Liberty University Department of History May 11, 2018 Abstract The M26 tank, nicknamed the “General Pershing,” was the final result of the Ordnance Department’s revolutionary T20 series. It was the only American heavy tank to be fielded during the Second World War. Less is known about this tank, mainly because it entered the war too late and in too few numbers to impact events. However, it proved a sufficient design – capable of going toe-to-toe with vaunted German armor. After the war, American tank development slowed and was reduced mostly to modernization of the M26 and component development. The Korean War created a sudden need for armor and provided the impetus for further development. M26s were rushed to the conflict and demonstrated to be decisive against North Korean armor. Nonetheless, the principle role the tank fulfilled was infantry support. In 1951, the M26 was replaced by its improved derivative, the M46. #216 ALLAN SANFORD: USS WARD Steven Haller (SH): My name is Steven Haller, and I'm here with James P. Delgado, at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii. It's December 5, 1991, at about 5:25 PM. And we have the pleasure to be interviewing Mr. Allan Sanford. Mr. Sanford was a Seaman First Class on the USS WARD, at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. Mr.[Sanford], Ward's gun fired what is in essence the first shot of World War II, and so it's a great pleasure to be able to be talking with you today. We're going to be doing this tape as a part of the National Park Service and ARIZONA Memorial's oral history program. We're doing it in conjunction with KHET-TV in Honolulu. So thanks again for being with us today, Mr. Sanford. Allan Sanford: It's a pleasure to be here. SH: Good. How did you get into the Navy? AS: I joined the Naval reserve unit in St. Paul, Minnesota and with two others of my classmates in high school. And we enjoyed the meetings, and uniforms, and drills, and it was a nice social activity that was a little more mature than some of the high school activities that we had participated in. So we enjoyed the meetings of the St. Paul Naval reserve. And we called it also the Minnesota Naval Militia. However, in September 1940, the commanding officer of the unit came to the meeting and said, "Attention to orders, the Minnesota Naval Militia is hereby made part of the U.S. -

JOHNSTON © 2019 The Gato class submarines of the United States Navy in World War II proved to be the leading weapon in the strategic war against the Japanese merchant marine and were also a solid leg of the triad that included their surface and air brethren in the USN’s tactical efforts to destroy the Imperial Japanese Navy. Because of this they have achieved iconic status in the minds of historians. Ironically though, the advancing years since the war, the changing generations, and fading memories of the men that sailed them have led to a situation where photographs, an essential part of understanding history, have gone misidentified which in some cases have led historians to make egregious errors in their texts. A cursory review of photographs of the U.S. fleet submarines of World War II often leaves you with the impression that the boats were nearly identical in appearance. Indeed, the fleet boats from the Porpoise class all the way to the late war Tench class were all similar enough in appearance that it is easy to see how this impression is justified. However, a more detailed examination of the boats will reveal a bewildering array of differences, some of them quite distinct, that allows the separation of the boats into their respective classes. Ironically, the rapidly changing configuration of the boats’ appearances often makes it difficult to get down to a specific boat identification. -

Disaster in Harbour: The Loss of HMS Vanguard William Schleihauf Lying peacefully at anchor in the sheltered waters of Scapa Flow, the battleship HMS Vanguard suddenly blew-up on a quiet summer night in July 1917, leaving but a handful of survivors. Accident or sabotage? While the trail of evidence uncovered by the Court of Inquiry furnished no definitive answer, the conclusion that it was an accidental cordite explosion makes the most sense and has not been seriously challenged to this day. Her remains are still in the Flow, but it is unlikely that even a full archaeological survey could determine anything other than that it was indeed an explosion in one of the amidships magazines which sank the ship. The records of the Court of Inquiry shed light on the internal routines of the Royal Navy's capital ships: even in such basic (and vital) procedures as the taking of magazine temperatures, each ship handled matters in its own way. Of equal interest are the many improvements which resulted from the loss of Vanguard. Surprisingly little has been written about the sudden, catastrophic sinking of this powerful man-of-war - it is not even mentioned in the official History. ' Typical is the simple "destroyed by internal explosion at Scapa 9 July '17" in Oscar Parkes' British Battleships.2 Other later references provide little more: even R. A. Burt in his detailed British Battleships of World War One only summarises the evidence.3 In his book about the loss of the armoured cruiser HMS Natal, Cecil Hampshire discusses the Vanguard tragedy but the description is marred by his attempt to use very circumstantial evidence to find a saboteur.4 The paper before you is an in-depth look at Vanguard's destruction and the lessons learned from it, with emphasis placed on the technical tidbits that are of value when trying to learn about the day-to-day habits of the wartime Royal Navy. -
