Editorial Error:

My apologies for the editorial errors that appeared in the last edition of Pullman & CIWL News No.32. The Pullman Car History featured ‘Third Class CAR No.50’. I wrongly detailed the post 1960 schedule number as being No.160, this should have read No.147, and that the car was 2 x 12 wheel and not 2 x 8 wheel. Within the Menu page, I referenced CAR No.80 instead of CAR No.50. My thanks to Geoff Cox for also advising of the errors.

Bringing Back the Belle. The wonderful , the only electric all-Pullman train in the world, succeeded the steam service between London and Brighton in 1933 and became the world's first electric inter-city train. A much loved railway icon, the three five-car train sets were withdrawn by BR in 1972. Now we have a wonderful idea - an amazing feat of restoration, to bring together a complete train set and return the Belle to the mainline! To follow progress with the restoration and help. http://www.brightonbelle.com

The National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis, Tennessee - Howard Sprenger.

On 20th July, I visited the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee, where I took the photographs below. The National Civil Rights Museum is a complex of museums and historic buildings in Memphis, Tennessee; its exhibits trace the history of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the 17th century to the present. The museum is built around the former Lorraine Motel, where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Two other buildings and their adjacent property, also connected with the King assassination, have been acquired as part of the museum complex. The museum re-opened in 2014 after renovations that increased the number of multi-media and interactive exhibits, including numerous short movies to enhance features. The museum is owned and operated by the Lorraine Civil Rights Museum Foundation, based in Memphis. The Lorraine Motel is owned by the Tennessee State Museum and leased long term to the Foundation to operate as part of the museum complex.

Pullman Car History Digest - Geoff Cox.

Since the publication of Coupé News edition 40, the Pullman Car History feature has grown into a very useful resource, with a mass of data covering almost 100 cars. To make it easy to access details of an individual car I have created with the help of Terry Bye a Digest of the published information.

We have agreed that the Digest will be published annually (free of any charge), this will allow the six histories published in each twelve month period to be added.

The Digest will be published in early December of each year, as with the newsletter this will be attached to an E-mail in ‘pdf’ format.

2017 Pullman Cars Preserved - T.Bye & P.Hall.

To advise readers that the ‘2017 Pullman Cars Preserved’ will be published in early January 2017. Currently in draft form, I am currently lacking any photographs of individual preserved cars for inclusion. if you would like to have a photograph included, please forward in ‘jpg’ format with any details you wish added to my E-mail address.

Pacific Class Locomotive Pullman Workings.

Tommy Knox.

As ever my thanks to Tommy Knox for the following information on steam hauled Pullman services on the East Coast Main Line. Within the text reference is made to ‘Up’ and ‘Dn’ workings. These relate thus, an ‘Up’ working is a service to London Kings Cross, and ‘Dn’ is a ‘Down’ working from Kings Cross. I.e. All lines to any of London’s terminals are classified as the ‘UP Line’.

Colin Kerswill - DB Mainline Steam Traction Inspector Retires.

©PCS-Archive.

Colin correctly dressed for his footplate duties stands beside 35028 ‘Clan Line’.

Any reader who has travelled within any of the Belmond Steam hauled British Pullman operations will more than likely have seen Colin on the footplate, firstly as the driver and lately as steam traction inspector. Colin’s career on the railway followed the traditions of his family, his Grandfather, Father and several Great Uncles being enginemen in the West Country. His father commenced his career at Plymouth Friary in 1912, he moved to Windsor and eventually Hither Green when the depot opened in 1934. He retired early after 41 years. Commencing his railway career on the southern region in 1953, this being the same year his father retired, the intervening years saw Colin progress from a locomotive cleaner to traction inspector.

In 2000, Colin retired from his role as driver on mainline steam operations, but it was not long before he was invited to return to mainline steam footplate duties. In his second term on the footplate he had the privilege to drive a number of well-known steam locomotives these included Clan Line, Taw Valley, Tangmere, Flying Scotsman, Britannia, Duke of Gloucester, Union of South Africa and Tornado.

Not content with his mainline footplate duties, Colin is also the traction inspector on the South Devon Railway, a role in which he is both proud to undertake and enjoys.

Colin is a true Gentleman of the old school and he is held in great esteem by all fellow mainline steam crews.

I am sure fellow readers will join me in wishing Colin a long and happy retirement.

Joining Sea Containers in 1980, Jeff became a cabin steward on the CIWL cars of the continental operation of the Venice Simplon Orient-Express. In the period 1983 to 2000 Jeff progressed to senior steward and finally chief steward.

In 2000, Jeff took up the challenge to start the all new Northern Belle train operation, not an easy task and was extremely hard work, but Jeff found it to be an amazing experience to work on something right from the start and see it become so successful.

In 2001, a further challenge was taken-up when Jeff took up the role as Train Manager of the British Pullman operation. In the 15 years as train manager Jeff became the regular face who met and was seen by passengers on board the train from all around the World.

MALAGA Pullman Society Site Visit - Thursday October 13th 2016.

©Tim Robbins.

Tim Robbins with other members of the Pullman Society visited Ian Allan Publications at Shepperton, to view Pullman Kitchen First Class ‘MALAGA’.

‘MALAGA’ being one car of an order placed in 1919 for a total of twelve cars (Six Parlour First & Six Kitchen First) for use on the South Eastern & Chatham Railways Dover & Folkestone Continental Boat Train Services. ‘MALAGA’ (KF) was one of six cars CADIZ (PF), SYLVIA (PF), MONACO (KF), SUNBEAM (PF) & NEPTUNE (KF), constructed by the Pullman Car Company at its Longhedge Works in South London. The remaining six cars PADUA (PF), PORTIA (KF), CALAIS (PF), MILAN (PF), PALMYRA (KF) & ROSALIND (KF), were constructed by the Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company Limited at its Smethwick Works.

The livery applied by the Pullman Car Company was as applied to the South Eastern & Chatham Railways operational Pullman cars of Crimson Lake (as applied presently to Pullman car TOPAZ within the National Collection at the NRM York). In the late summer of 1949 MALAGA was remodelled at the Pullman Car Company Preston Park works, Brighton. The original pamella wood paneling and other fittings being removed, and fitted with Australian walnut veneer, new window mouldings, luggage racks and table lamps were anodized aluminium with a copper finish.

As per SC36 as supplied to Mr G.Child by Mr J.L.Gilbert Works Manager on October 15th 1962, the document lists the ex- Pullman cars that have, or will be converted to Pullman Camping Coaches. MALAGA is listed under Drawing No.P138. But written onto the document is “Undecided” and within the column allocated for its Camping Coach Identity Number is written ‘Sold to Ian Allan Limited’.

Clark & Company of Paisley - Mauchline Spool Box - Pullman Parlor Car - P.Dobson.

©T.Bye/PCS-A.

A recent purchase by my eldest daughter, a sewing spool box as produced by Clark & Company. This is the first such box that I have seen and until now never knew existed. Originating in the Scottish town of Mauchline, the box is in the form of a "Pullman Parlor Car". The top has a charming floral panel, and the lid retains the original Clark & Co. paper Cottons label. Originally the box stood on four wheels which did not turn, but over time these have been removed.

The Clark & Company dates back to 1755 when James and Patrick Clark began a loom equipment and silk thread business in Paisley, Scotland. In 1806 Patrick Clark invented a way of twisting cotton threads together to substitute for silk threads which were unavailable due to France's blockade of Great Britain and opened the first plant for manufacturing the cotton thread in 1812. The next significant date being in1826 James Coats opened a cotton mill and his sons, James and Peter, took up the business under the name of J. and P. Coats. This was then followed in 1864 when the Clark family began manufacturing in Newark, New Jersey, U.S. In 1896 The control of the businesses of Clark and Co, Jonas Brook and Brothers and James Chadwick and Brother were acquired by J. and P. Coats.

There was also a live-steam passenger-carrying railway outside and another one at the station, where the Bluebell Railway had full-size 'Terrier' Stepney on display and from where a very popular shuttle service along the now freight-only line to Ardingly was being worked by the preserved 'Hastings Diesel' unit.

Midland Pullman - six car set. Electro-diesel 73101 - In two named versions 'Brighton Evening Argus' and 'The Royal Alex'.

The event appeared to be very well attended with a high proportion of families with young children (a number of whom recognised 'Mallard') so our stand created considerable interest even though we may not have recruited any new members.

We were located immediately adjacent to Dennis Rapley's operating layout, re-named 'Tilgate' for this event, and running a variety of appropriate for the Brighton main line, including a ten-car Brighton Belle , a 6PUL unit, and a 4PUL unit.

HAYWARDS HEATH 175TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION 18TH SEPTEMBER 2016.

I was invited to exhibit my 00 scale layout at the model railway exhibition convened as part of the celebrations marking the 175th anniversary of the arrival of the first trains into Haywards Heath station. Most of the layouts attending were Southern Region in character, usually set in the 1960s. For my part I decided not to simply exhibit my Southern Electric Multiple units but also to include trains from the London Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSSC), Southern Railway (SR), British Railways Southern Region (BRSR) and British Rail (BR). I have only modelled the 1960’s before, so anything else needed to be made especially.

The LBSC train became a fictitious 1991 steam special 150th anniversary celebration train made up from varnished mahogany painted LBSCR coaches hauled by a Terrier. For a bit of fun and to drift viewers towards the PULLMAN subject I painted one coach in the LBSC “experimental” umber and cream livery which paved the way for later use by Pullman themselves, no doubt after ditching the morbid “dull Olive”.

The Down Southern Belle passing through Tilgate.

The Southern Belle is really only a White Pullman/Southampton Boat train and technically incorrect on just about everything but it looked great and got people talking. I expected to be corrected by experts about the bogie tender but I was not. The audience loved it and their main concern was, “why doesn’t it have lit table lamps like the other train?”

I chose typical Brighton Line units from my Southern Region fleet, these included 4 Lav, 2 Bil / 2Hal / 2 Steel Hal, 2 x 5 BEL, 6 CIT, 6 PAN, 4 COR / 4PUL, 4 BIG / 4CIG. A couple of N class 2-6-0 locos were allocated parcels duties and a M7 ran the branch line push-pull shuttle train. For the British Rail era, I had a BR blue livery 4 Vep / NSE livery 4 Vep, the latter courtesy of Dave Evans. In addition I made a class 73 hauled Inter-City Gatwick Express set.

The ‘Up’ Brighton Belle passing through Tilgate.

The show organisers asked each of us exhibitors to set questions about our layouts to encourage children to look more closely and then complete the questionnaire to win a commemorative pencil which had a small model of Terrier STEPNEY on the end! I asked one question about the colour of the train spotter’s dog and the other about the names of the ladies travelling in the trains. Once they’d got the dog spotted they had to watch the 10 car Brighton Belle go by, firstly at scale line speed to show how difficult train spotting could be in reality and then at a crawl to get the names, DORIS, HAZEL, GWEN and MONA. I then ran the 6 CIT set with composite car RUTH within its formation followed by the 4COR / 4PUL set with composite car CLARA within its formation. The highly satisfied children then moved on with their further-educated parents to the next layout. If they returned with their prize pencil we got the LBSC Terrier out with its train as a special run.

Pullman & La Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits et des Grand Express Européens News Edition No.33 - November & December 2016 - Page 43 of 70

The 1200 people audience were mainly families rather than train enthusiasts although several modellers watched the electric units whir by for ages. With only two of us from the Isle of Wight to run the layout we left it until after lunch before offering the controls to some of the eager faced children itching to have a go, and have a go they did! A great day.

For the modeler’s information.

The ‘Down’ Brighton Belle service passing through Tilgate.

The 4 Lav is based on old Graham Farish suburban coaches, cheap enough to chop about. Scratch built cab/guards van ends, flush glazed, but still technically under-length with a HORNBY power bogie in a centre car.

The 6 CIT driving cars sides are cut from spare Ian Kirk Maunsel open seconds with scratch built cab ends all mounted on old Tri-ang Mk1 underframes. Cast metal bogies. Trailers are all cut about Graham Farish coaches with added roof detail. Composite Pullman is from plasticard with flush glazing and Tri-ang Pullman roof parts and ends. HMRS lining and detail and a HORNBY power bogie in the Pullman kitchen.

The 4Cor / 4Pul units are old MTK kits of brass sides etc. Really heavy coaches. The units double up as 4 Cor / 4Res on my other layout but I replace the kitchen restaurant second with a composite Pullman for the Brighton line. The Pullman is a cut about HORNBY Brighton Belle Kitchen first with Precision labels overlays. John Peck made them to my specification as specials to suit the longer length cars.

The two 5 Bel units are from HORNBY but all have been detailed as running in the late 50s early 60s rather than the 1930s they portrayed. All re-named, interiors painted and curtains fitted.

The LBSCR Commemorative Steam Special is a HORNBY Terrier with converted, re-roofed Tri-ang GWR clerestory coaches. Painted simulated mahogany lined in gold using a fine pen.

On behalf of the DRM ePublishing Board

http://www.mremag.com

As many of you are aware the MREMag site crashed on Monday (October 24th) and despite the ongoing best efforts of our technical director the problem has proved unable to be fixed. On analysis our expert discovered that there is a major error in the program used to host MREMag and although the problem has not been created by MRE we have been advised that fixing the problem would incur a nonspecific fee for the situation to be rectified. Our future plans had taken into account the creation of a new website and the fact that we are now having a problem with the existing site has forced us to bring forward our plans and introduce the new site as quickly as possible. This may take a few weeks, possibly four or five but we believe that to bring forward the launch of the new site, which will contain a moderated forum in place of ‘Having Your Say’ is the most effective solution to the current situation. With this in mind do please keep sending in your contributions and. and if they are still relevant by the time the new site goes live they will be posted. Sometimes situations can force changes to plans sooner than expected and the problem we are experiencing with the current site is just one of those occasions. We do apologise to all those who enjoy a cup of tea while reading ‘Having Your Say’ but we are convinced that our decision is the most practical. Please keep checking back to the website though as we will also be monitoring incoming emails and will continue to provide updates on progress. We will also provide a link to the new eMagazine from there in November. Once again, our apologies for the untimely changes and please bear with us. We really are doing our best to get something in place.

The Wishlist Poll 2016 - Brian Macdermott.

The annual Wishlist Poll for new ‘N’ and ‘00’ gauge models ran from October 10th to 29th which included models of both eight and twelve Pullman Cars.

The purpose of the Poll is to provide an easy and enjoyable way for both modellers and collectors to tell the major manufacturers and commissioners of ready-to-run railway models what they would like to see made from new tooling (excluding models announced, tooled or made since 2000).

There were 20 categories covering steam locos of the Big Four and BR; DMUs; EMUs; Coaches; Non-passenger-carrying Coaching Stock; Freight Stock; General Service Stock; Standard Gauge Industrial Locos; and finally London Underground.

As an aide-mémoire for voters, the nine man Poll team provided a Guide to the Poll content, about 200 words for each of the 700 plus items and about 1,600 links in total.

Pullman Cars and The Wishlist Poll 2016 By Brian Macdermott.

Once again, very many thanks to Terry Bye for advising readers of The Wishlist Poll and to all those who cast votes for Pullman Cars. I have only had time to collate the 00 results to meet Terry’s publication deadline, but will send the N results for the next issue.

The figures in the left-hand column below are the number of votes for that item in 2016. The results are very much in line with those of 2015, except that the Manchester Pullman stock has fared much better this year.

High Polling.

206 Wagons Lits - CIWL Night Ferry Stock. 177 Mk2 Manchester Pullman Stock.

Middle Polling.

(Just a handful more votes, and it would have been High Polling) 160 1951 Festival of Britain Cars.

Low Polling.

115 12-wheel Cars. 91 Pullman Buffet Cars (to BR early 1960s). 76 J Class (1921 conversions).

A full set of results will be available on RMweb in early November (www.rmweb.co.uk). Look for a thread headed: Results - The Wishlist Poll 2016.

Rebuilt Merchant Navy Pacific 4-6-2 No.35022 ‘Holland America Line’ with the ‘Bournemouth Belle’ at Bournemouth on July 27th 1956.

In 1952, 35022 ‘Holland America Line’ was sent by British Railways to the test facility at Rugby, to try and find ways of improving the class. As part of test/trials 35022 ‘Holland America Line’ worked over the Settle & Carlisle railway and also visited other parts of the country where a Merchant Navy would never normally have been seen.

35022 ‘Holland America Line’ was amongst the first to be rebuilt with Walschaets valve gear on the outside in 1956 from the Oliver Bulleid original streamline design with chain driven valve gear inside the frames.

Only 10 years later 35022 ‘Holland America Line’ was withdrawn in May 1966 and sold to Dia Woodhams Scrap Yard at Barry, South Wales.

Remaining at Woodhams until 1983 until purchased by the Southern Steam Trust and moved to Swanage, however restoration was never started.

35022 ‘Holland America Line’ is now owned by the Royal Scot Locomotive & General Trust and is awaiting its turn in the overhaul queue.

Mike Couzens - August 28th 2016.

I was hoping there may be a little space in your next edition to ask a question. I have searched and searched but cannot find an exact date for when the 1948 Hadrian Bar was withdrawn from the Tees Tyne Pullman. I ask because the Tees Tyne Pullman started running with Mk1 Pullmans on the 16th Jan 1961 but the new Hadrian Bar was not introduced until 13 Feb. So I suppose my real question is, did the 1948 Hadrian Bar run with the Mk1 Pullmans from 16th Jan until 13th Feb 61?

Response:

David Lowther - September 1st 2016.

In answer to Mike Couzons regarding the ‘old’ Hadrian Bar in the Tees- Tyne Pullman – The ‘old’ Hadrian Bar was included with the new Mk 1 Pullmans in the Tees-Tyne Pullman from their introduction on 16th January 1961 until the ‘new’ car replaced it on13th February. The two earlier Brake vehicles and the ‘old’ Bar had their roofs repainted ‘aluminium’/silver for the inaugural run to match the new Mk1s. ______

A Retirement Celebration Recreates New York Central's 'New England States' - Lawrence Biemiller.

©Bennett Levin.

‘The New England States’ South Bound at Harlem Upper New York City.

Like many retirement celebrations, John Webb Jr.’s centred on a dinner. But unlike other thanks-for-your- years-of-work meals, his was held on the evening Saturday October 1st within New York’s Grand Central Terminal in Vanderbilt Hall, a soaring formal space that was once the station’s waiting room. Guests and honouree alike arrived and departed on a seven-car, all-private-varnish train. Pulled by two dual-mode P-32 locomotives belonging to Metro North, the commuter railroad serving Grand Central, the train made the first of three stops to board passengers in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and then ran alongside the Hudson River into New York City.

After the dinner ended, the deluxe train retraced its route along the river, dropping off all but about 30 of Mr. Webb’s family members and close friends. They stayed on board as the P-32s were replaced by a pair of Amtrak P-42s that took the special all the way to Chicago, where it arrived in the middle of Sunday afternoon as Train 869. Most of the passengers and five of the seven cars headed east again Monday evening on the end of Amtrak’s “Lake Shore Limited.” The passengers finally disembarked back in Poughkeepsie Tuesday afternoon.

‘Babling Brook’ stands at New York Grand Central awaiting passengers.

If that sounds like a fantasy trip along the old New York Central’s famous “Water Level Route,” it was - a fantasy realised by Mr. Webb’s son, John Webb III, who succeeds his father as the head of Emery & Webb Insurance, in Fishkill, N.Y. John Webb III is also the owner of “Babbling Brook,” a gleaming round-end observation car built for the New York Central by the Budd Company. “Babbling Brook” saw regular service as the tail car on the railroad’s “New England States,” which ran between Boston and Chicago, and it was the special train’s tail car as well. “Babbling Brook” proudly displayed the “New England States” lighted nameplate beneath its rear window.

The full consist, front to rear:

“Pennsylvania 120”. The only car in the train not built by Budd, this business car was constructed at the ’s Altoona Works in 1928. After a 1953 overhaul, it was assigned to the line’s president. Among other notables, it has carried the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and John F. Kennedy, and it was used to transport the body of Robert F. Kennedy to his funeral in June 1968. It is now owned by Bennett Levin’s Juniata Terminal Company, and Mr. Levin and his wife, Vivian, rode along to keep an eye on things.

“Warrior Ridge”. Also owned by Mr. Levin, “Warrior Ridge” was built as a Southern Pacific diner in 1950. Amtrak converted it to a pub for the “Montrealer,” and later to a food-service car with a small buffet line and a warming kitchen. It also has six four-seat tables, a pair of sofas, and two long rows of swivelling parlour-style chairs.

“Alexander Hamilton”. Constructed by Budd in 1952 for the Pennsylvania Railroad, “Alexander Hamilton” was originally a tail car on the “Congressional” between New York and Washington. It later became a business car for the Southern Pacific, and is now owned by the Morristown & Erie, a New Jersey shortline. It has both coach seats and a lounge area.

New York Central 43. A tavern-lounge car built in 1947, NYC 43 ran on many of the railroad’s signature trains. Subsequently owned by New Jersey Transit, it has since been restored to its original appearance, with table seating by the bar and Moderne armchairs in the main lounge. It is now owned by the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey.

“Mount Vernon”. Originally a sleeper with roomettes and bedrooms, “Mount Vernon” was built for the Union Pacific in 1949 as “Pacific Island.” It was later transferred to Amtrak and is now owned by Dominion Rail Voyages. The bedrooms are intact, but the end of the car once occupied by roomettes is now a lounge served by a small kitchen.

“Pacific Home”. Beautifully restored and just returned to operation this year, “Pacific Home” is a sister to “Mount Vernon.” As “Pacific Island,” “Mount Vernon” carried No. 1417, and “Pacific Home” was No. 1418, and like its sister, it went on to serve Amtrak. Now owned by National Passenger Car Repair, it retains its bedrooms and most of its roomettes, although one of the latter has been converted to a bathroom and another to a comfortable shower room.

“Babbling Brook”. Another 1949 car, “Babbling Brook” was built with five bedrooms, a bar, and a lounge with seating for 25. After 10 years, it was sold to the Canadian Pacific, and in 1969 it was sold to Quebec Cartier Mining, which used it as a business car. It was subsequently returned to its original appearance, except that Bedroom E was configured into a full kitchen and the linen closet became a shower. Webb Rail LLC is the third private owner of the car since its restoration in the mid-1980s.

Smoked-salmon Tray.

Partygoers, many of them in stylish 1940s attire, seemed to take particular delight in New York Central 43’s wide-open period interior, but on the trip into Grand Central, caterers offered drinks and hors d’oeuvres throughout the consist, and the celebration was well underway in every lounge before the train reached New York City. The departure from Grand Central after the banquet was even more stylish: Metro North rolled out a red carpet on the platform and photographers snapped pictures of the Webbs’ guests as though they were celebrities boarding the “20th Century Limited.”

Pullman & La Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits et des Grand Express Européens News Edition No.33 - November & December 2016 - Page 65 of 70

Those who remained on the train for the trip to Chicago had bedrooms in “Mount Vernon” and “Pacific Home,” and many - not including the children - stayed up late in the “Babbling Brook” lounge. As the train rolled westward on Sunday, crew members prepared breakfast and then lunch, using both the full kitchen in the “Pennsylvania” kitchen and the warming kitchen in “Warrior Ridge,” where guests gathered to eat and then socialise in the swivel chairs.

Amtrak delivered the consist to Chicago in mid-afternoon, and guests departed to hotels. Crew members spent Monday regrouping and resupplying in the Chicago coach yard. On Monday evening passengers re-boarded the cars - minus the “Alexander Hamilton” and NYC 43, because the “Lake Shore Limited” can accommodate only five private cars - in time for cake and ice cream and the 9:30 p.m. departure.

Layover at Chicago Coach Yard.

Considering how rare such movements are, particularly on Metro North, it was surprising that the train encountered so few complications. The it was originally spotted on in Grand Central lacked working electrical connections, so the special had to be moved one track over. The breakfast chefs were accidentally locked out of the “Pennsylvania” overnight during the eastbound move when a crew member closed the end door to the car and it locked behind him. And because the length of Penn Station’s platforms restricts the “Lake Shore Limited” to two private cars south of Albany, “Babbling Brook,” “Pacific Home,” and “Mount Vernon” were cut off there.

The remaining passengers filled “Warrior Ridge” until Poughkeepsie, where they detrained through the immaculate “Pennsylvania” while their luggage was put out onto the platform through a thigh-high door dating to the era when “Warrior Ridge” was as a diner and food might be loaded from either side.

The one real drawback of being aboard the train was that it was impossible to see it pass. On a curve a passenger might glimpse one end from the other through a window, and chefs taking a break between meals might have opened the top half of the Dutch door in the “Pennsylvania” vestibule to watch the scenery unspool. But only a few railroad employees and savvy railfans caught the special in motion - emerging in splendour from the tunnel under Park Avenue, leaving Albany in darkness with the “New England States” nameplate glowing red, slipping out of Toledo in late morning. It was a sight not to be missed, but almost everyone did; it was a sight unlikely to be seen again.
