Revisión Histórica De Los Cambios Nomenclaturales Aplicados a Las Familias De Angiospermas Presentes En Venezuela ACTA BOT. Although the plants remain the same, their classification has changed over time. It is necessary to update and organize these changes in the Venezuelan literature that serve as a reference and dissemination of the current status of the nomenclature in the country, as well as the process that finally led to these changes. A historical review of these changes from 1945 to 2019 was made, taking into account the chronologically the most relevant and frequently used literature, in which the Venezuelan plants families were reflected at that moment. As a result, 146 families were listed without variation in their nomenclature, 89 names were excluded or corrected and 42 names were included or recovered. The total of families in Venezuela according to APG IV was 251. Some relevant notes were added referring to the causes that lead to the successive updates. Finally, the modifications that follow the main proposals worldwide are mentioned.

The Brazilian population with limited access to public health programs led to the development and conservation of ethnobotanical knowledge-rich information regarding medicinal plants. However, popular wisdom lacks systematization so that it can correctly use it. Herein we present the Piranhea trifoliata (family Picrondendraceae), an Amazonian plant with a wide variety of molecules with biological effects. The antimalarial effect was the dominant description observed in the studies used for this review, followed by antifungal and antioxidant actions.

  • Chapter One 1.0 Introduction and Background to The
CHAPTER ONE 1.0 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY Loganiaceae is a family of flowering plants classified in the Order Gentianales (Bendre, 1975). The family was first suggested by Robert Brown in 1814 and validly published by von Martius in 1827 (Nicholas and Baijnath, 1994). Members habits are in form of trees, shrubs, woody climbers and herbs. Some are epiphytes while some members are furnished with spines or tendrils (Bendre, 1975). They are distributed mainly in the tropics, subtropics and a few in temperate regions (Backlund et al., 2000). Earlier treatments of the family have included up to 30 genera, 600 species (Leeuwenberg and Leenhouts, 1980; Mabberley, 1997) but were later reduced to 400 species in 15 genera, with some species extending into temperate Australia and North America (Struwe et al., 1994; Dunlop, 1996; Backlund and Bremer, 1998). Morphological studies have demonstrated that this broadly defined Loganiaceae was a polyphyletic assemblage and numerous genera have been removed from it to other families (sometimes to other Orders), e.g. Gentianaceae, Gelsemiaceae, Plocospermataceae, Tetrachondraceae, Buddlejaceae, and Gesneriaceae (Backlund and Bremer, 1998; Backlund et al., 2000). The family has undergone numerous revisions that have expanded and contracted its circumscription, ranging from one genus at its smallest (Takhtajan, 1997; Smith et al., 1997) to 30 at its largest (Leeuwenberg and Leenhouts, 1980). One of the current infrafamilial classifications contains four tribes: Antonieae Endl., Loganieae Endl., Spigelieae Dum. (monotypic), and Strychneae Dum. (Struwe et al., 1994). The tribes Loganieae and Antonieae are supported by molecular data, but Strychneae is not (Backlund et al., 2000).

All recognized taxa will be clades; adherence to Linnaean ranks is optional. Synonymy is very incomplete (comprehensive synonymy is not a goal of the project, but could be incorporated). Although I anticipate producing a publishable version of this classification at a future date, my near- term goal is to produce a web-accessible version, which will be available to the public and which will be updated regularly through input from systematists familiar with taxa within the Lamiales. For further information on the project and to provide information for future versions, please contact R. Niche overlap values, indicating the ary biology requires an understanding of the evolutionary similarity of two species’ distributions along soil or topo- lability in species’ ecological niches. For tropical trees, graphic axes, were calculated for all pairwise combinations specialization for particular soil resource and topographic of co-occurring tree species at each study site. Congeneric conditions is an important part of the habitat niche, influ- species pairs often showed greater niche overlap (i.e., more encing the distributions of individual species and overall similar niches) than non-congeneric pairs along both soil tree community structure at the local scale. However, little and topographic axes, though significant effects were found is known about how these habitat niches are related to the for only five sites based on Mantel tests. No evidence for evolutionary history of species. We assessed the relation- taxonomic effects was found at the family level. Our results ship between taxonomic rank and tree species’ soil resource indicate that local habitat niches of trees exhibit varying and topographic niches in eight large (24–50 ha) tropical degrees of phylogenetic signal at different sites, which may have important ramifications for the phylogenetic structure Communicated by Walt Carson.

  • Characterisation of a Novel Fruit Type Found in Ehretia (Ehretiaceae, Boraginales)
BLUMEA 49: 145–153 Published on 3 May 2004 doi: 10.3767/000651904X486250 CHARACTERISATION OF A NOVEL FRUIT TYPE FOUND IN EHRETIA (EHRETIACEAE, BORAGINALES) MARC GOTTSCHLING1, 2 & HARTMUT H. HILGER1 SUMMARY Ehretia (Ehretiaceae, Boraginales) has been divided into two major clades, characterised by fruits with four endocarpids (Ehretia I, including species of Ehretia formerly belonging to Rotula) and by fruits with two endocarpids (Ehretia II, plus E. microphylla (= Carmona retusa) with an undivided endocarp), respectively. Both molecular (ITS1) and morphological data support the recognition of an additional clade, Ehretia III (E. longiflora species group). Its representatives are characterised by four endocarpids (as in Ehretia I), but differ in the presence of distinct lamellae on the abaxial surface of each endocarpid (as in Bourreria, also belonging to Ehretiaceae). However, molecular data suggest a close relationship with Ehretia II. At least three species belong to Ehretia III: Chinese E. longiflora, eastern Indian E. wallichiana, and Indonesian E. javanica. Key words: Ehretia longiflora, anatomy, fruit, ITS1, molecular systematics, phylogeny, phylo- geography. INTRODUCTION Ehretiaceae (Boraginales) are pantropical in distribution (with centres of diversity in Central America, Africa, and East Asia) and comprise about 150 species. The plants are usually subshrubs, shrubs, or trees, and otherwise have the typical asterid characters such as tetracyclic, pentamerous flowers with five antesepalous stamens and bicarpel- late gynoecia. Fruit morphology provides a systematically important set of characters in Ehretiaceae (Pitot, 1939a, b; Miller, 1989; Verdcourt, 1991; Gottschling & Hilger, 2001). Most of the species of Ehretiaceae have drupes (otherwise dry nutlets), with either undivided, two-, or four-parted endocarps. The individual parts of the two- and four-parted endocarps are termed endocarpids and enclose two seeds or one seed each, respectively.
