Abstract: Riparian flora is an expressed survey to analyze marginal vegetation of river zones. The present study was conducted in Thamiraparani river of Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, India. Result of the current study showed a total of, 720 species of angiosperms belonging to 449 genera under 126 families of these 76.5% were dicots and 23.5% of monocots were recorded.Habitually 30.4% herbs , 26.7% trees, 15.7% shrubs, 6.9% climbing shrubs, 5.2% perennial herbs, 3.3% annual herbs, 2 % twining herbs, 1.7% twining shrubs, 1.6% aquatic herbs, 1.3% climbing herbs, 0.6% rhizomatous herbs, 0.7% marshy herbs, 0.7% tunerous herbs, 0.6% lianas, 0.4% tuberous climbing herbs, 0.4% stragglinbg shrubs, 0.3% climbers, 0.3% climbing palms, 0.3% prostrate herbs, climbing shrub, creeping herb, epiphytic herb, parasitic shrub and parasitic twining herb were 0.1% . -

These highly adapted, forest wetland ecosystems have many remarkable features, making them a constant source of wonder and inquiry. This chapter introduces mangrove forests, the factors that influence them, and some of their key benefits and functions. This knowledge is considered essential for those who propose to manage them sustainably. We describe key and currently recommended strategies in an accompanying article on mangrove forest management (Schmitt and Duke 2015). Of primary significance, the tidal wetland forests they form thrive in saline and saturated soils, a domain where few other plants survive (Fig. 1). Mangrove species have been indepen- dently derived from a diverse assemblage of higher taxa. The habitat and structure created by these species are correspondingly complex, and their features vary from place to place. For instance, in temperate areas of southern Australia, forests of Avicennia mangrove species often form accessible parkland stands, notable for their openness under closed canopies (Duke 2006). -

In the past few decades, however, these mangrove forests have been largely degraded and destroyed during the process of development. The negative environmental and socio-economic impacts on mangrove ecosystems have led many government and non- government agencies, together with civil societies, to launch mangrove conservation and rehabilitation programmes, especially during the 1990s. In the course of such activities, programme staff have faced continual difficulties in identifying plant species growing in the field. Despite a wide availability of mangrove guidebooks in Southeast Asia, none of these sufficiently cover species that, though often associated with mangroves, are not confined to this habitat. -

All recognized taxa will be clades; adherence to Linnaean ranks is optional. Synonymy is very incomplete (comprehensive synonymy is not a goal of the project, but could be incorporated). Although I anticipate producing a publishable version of this classification at a future date, my near- term goal is to produce a web-accessible version, which will be available to the public and which will be updated regularly through input from systematists familiar with taxa within the Lamiales. J. Asiat. Soc. Bangladesh, Sci. 41(1): 19-32, June 2015 ASSESSMENT OF ANGIOSPERM PLANT DIVERSITY OF NIJHUM DWEEP, BANGLADESH MOHAMMAD ZASHIM UDDIN1, MD. GOLAM KIBRIA AND MD. ABUL HASSAN Department of Botany, University of Dhaka, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh. Abstract The present article focuses the status of angiosperm plant diversity of Nijhum Dweep, a small Island in the Bay of Bengal close to Hatiya channel. From the analysis of the data a total of 152 plant species belonging to 56 families has been recorded. Among the recorded species, tree is represented by 66, shrub by 15, herbs by 58 and 13 by climbers. Of the species recorded from the area 51% species represented by 11 families and 49% represented by 45 families. Fabaceae appears to be largest in the Dicotyledones having 10 species whereas Poaceae is the largest in Monocotyledones having 12 species. Analysis confirmed that 68% of the recorded species found to be medicinal and 32% are used for other than medicinal purposes. Data analysis also showed that homesteads supported maximum plants followed by road side, cultivated land, mangrove and mangrove meadows. Collected data revealed that the occurrence of seven species namely Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Diospyros blancoi, Derris trifoliata, Heliotropium curassavicum, Tamarix gallica, Typha elephentanea and Sarcolobus carinatus in the study area might be rare. Dolichandrone spathacea, a threatened of plant species of Bangladesh, was also found in this mangrove forest area. Through observations and discussion with local people, a number of threats to plant diversity have been identified. Finally, a number of possible conservation measures have been suggested for the management of angiosperm plant diversity of Nijhum Dweep. -

Pragasam1 and Prakash Patel2 1Kanchi Mamunivar Centre for Post Graduate Studies, Puducherry, India 2Shri Aurobindo International Centre of Education, Puducherry, India *Author for Correspondence: [email protected] ABSTRACT The present study has been carried out during 2012-14 in the study site called the Lake Estate, which is situated 10 km west of Puducherry town. During the study a total of 272 plant species were encountered of which 236 species represented from 201 genera and 69 families were found to be medicinal and used in various systems of medicines, in which 77 are herbs, 41 shrubs, 46 climbers and 72 trees. About 202 species were recorded in Folk medicine, followed by Siddha (153), Ayurveda (140), Unani (50), Tibetian (41), Homeopathy (21) and Modern medicine (4). Three species viz., Cissampelos pareira var. hirsuta, Santalum album and Strychnos nux-vomica are used in all systems of medicines.
