  • The Parish Magazine of St Stephen's Church Guernsey November 2020
The Parish Magazine of St Stephen’s Church Guernsey November 2020 From the Editor We have lots for your reading pleasure in this issue of the Magazine—thoughts on remembrance, an interesting ‘Do You Know?’, more on the Strategic Review, an article on Andrew the Apostle (Feast Day 30th November), articles from two of our regular contributors, notes on the Feast of Christ the King (22nd November) and, very importantly, highlights on events to come. All for you to enjoy with a nice hot cup of tea, watching all those leaves falling in the garden waiting to be raked up (several times probably) ‘one of these days’. Claudia Moore Do This in Remembrance of Me These words of Christ at the Last Supper were more than a simple command to commemorate. They were, and are, a call to recognise that Jesus of Nazareth, this important historical figure, has left His mark on the world. As we come to the altar to follow this command, the effects of that first Good Friday are not only called to mind but have a direct bearing on our lives. Our memory forms us. It has a impact on who we are as individuals and as a society. The Early Church Fathers spoke of the memory as being ‘a power of the soul’; and the great philosopher Aristotle referred to it as being the ‘scribe of the soul’. Memory informs, rightly or wrongly, and has an effect on our decision- making and therefore on our future. It also keeps the events of the past present in our lives.

  • The Theological Reception of the Book of Isaiah in the Nineteenth-Century Church of England
The Theological Reception of the Book of Isaiah in the Nineteenth-Century Church of England By Robert Lewis Knetsch A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Wycliffe College and the Theology Department of the Toronto School of Theology In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theology awarded by the University of St. Michael’s College © Copyright by Robert L. Knetsch 2013 THE THEOLOGICAL RECEPTION OF THE BOOK OF ISAIAH IN THE NINETEENTH-CENTURY CHURCH OF ENGLAND Robert Lewis Knetsch Doctor of Philosophy in Theology Faculty of Theology, University of St. Michael’s College 2013 Abstract This study considers the matter of “theological exegesis” in the context of a divided Church. For the purpose of specificity, I direct attention to the nineteenth-century Church of England and the book of the Prophet Isaiah serves as the exegetical focal point for analyzing various commentators. The terminus a quo is a rather straight-forward one: in what sense does the practice of reading Scripture become fundamentally re-defined within a frangible ecclesial reality? This project takes a novel approach to the reception-history of Isaiah and to the many changes that attended theological exegesis since the Reformation. I challenge the prevailing view that new historical-critical methods precipitate from external pressures on a Church unable to keep abreast of new discoveries. I argue, instead, that the emergence of such methodologies is the consequence of warring ecclesial factions. Thus, nineteenth- century exegetical strategies arise from the conflicts of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Restricting my purview to the Church of England and English Roman Catholicism, I consider the three well known parties within the former: Low Church Evangelicals, Broad Church liberal-minded exegetes, and the old High Church party.

THE CHURCHMAN July, 1931. NOTES AND COMMEN'fS. The Oxford Conference of Evangelical Churchmen. HE Oxford Conference of Evangelical Churchmen held at St. T Peter's Hall on April r3, 14 and r5 was a most successful meeting. In view of the Lambeth Conference Report on Unity and the important problems raised in it the Conference reviewed the whole situation in a general consideration of "The Basis of Anglican Doctrine and Fellowship." It was pointed out in the letter summoning the Conference that in the Lambeth Report " a new view of the Anglican Communion has been accepted, and its relation to the Unreformed, Reformed and the New Missionary Churches has in consequence received a new orientation" and therefore "it is a matter of primary moment that Evangelicals should grasp clearly what is involved in the new outlook, as some of the proposals can only be adopted by the acceptance of changes in our historic attitude to the Reformation and to the Reformed and Unreformed Churches." The main object of the Oxford Con ference was " to discover where Evangelicals stand in the new phase of the Reunion movement and to set forth unambiguously the convictions that determine their attitude." Thanks to the kind ness of the readers of the papers at the Conference we are able in this number of THE CHURCHMAN to give a verbatim report of all of them, and it will be seen that they form a valuable contribution to the discussion of some of the most important problems before the Church at the present time. We regret that we are unable to give any of the addresses of the speakers who took part in the discussions.
