Richard Niebuhr and Daniel D. Williams (eds.) H. Richard Niebuhr was Professor of Christian Theology at Yale University Divinity School. His most famous book is Christ and Culture. Assisting him in this project were Daniel Day Williams, Professor of Theology at Union Theological School, and James Gustafson, then on the staff of the Study of Theological Education in the U.S. and Canada. The Ministry in Historical Perspectives was published in 1956 by Harper & Brothers, New York. It was part of a survey of theological education in the United States and Canada, which led to the publishing of this book as well as H. Richard Niebuhr, The Purpose of the Church and Its Ministry (1956) and H. Richard Niebuhr, Daniel D. Williams, and James M. Gustafson, The Advancement of Theological Education (1957). This material was prepared for Religion Online by Ted & Winnie Brock (ENTIRE BOOK) The subject of this book concerns the various concepts of what a "minister" is. From the time of St. Paul and the primitive church to the present, ministry developed in many directions. The various authors of these chapters demonstrate what the ministry has been, what it is today (1956) and the portent of what it is to become. Chapter 1: The Ministry in the Primative Church, by John Knox The derivation of the names for the leaders of the First Century church which includes, among others, the terms Ministery (I), Apostles (II), Bishops and Deacons (III), Prophets & Teachers (IV), Presbyters and Elders (V), and the Episcopacy (VI). Chapter 2: The Ministry of the Ante-Nicene Church (c. 125-325), by George H. Williams There is meager evidence for the end of the New Testament epoch and the beginning of the Patristic period concerning the various leadership positions. There were at least five competing images in which a chief pastor of a Christian church might see himself mirrored (c. 125): as an elder of a Christian sanhedrin, as an apostle, as a prophet, as a high priest, or as an epiphany of God or Christ to the Christian people. The various orders are gradually refined. The Nicene Council delineated an understanding concerning some of the ecclesiastical positions. Chapter 3: The Ministry in the Later Patristic Period (314-451), by George H. Willliams. http://www.religion-online.org/cgi-bin/relsearchd.dll/showbook?item_id=408 (1 of 3) [2/4/03 8:07:36 PM] The Ministry in Historical Perspectives In the complete change of religious climate after Constantine most of the new patterns of priestly behavior and pastoral rule which were to prevail for a millennium in both Eastern and Western Catholicism until challenged by Protestantism were laid down in the period between the Council of Arles in 314 and the Council of Chalcedon in 451. Chapter 4: The Ministry in the Middle Ages, by Roland H. Bainton Great changes were occasioned by a vast alteration in the social structure as a result of the barbarian inroads. Society was put in disarray. A further and even more serious setback was occasioned by the Mohammedan invasion commencing in the sixth century which made of the Mediterranean an Islamic sea. Against the heretics and the schismatics the Church invoked the Inquisition. Churchmen should inquire and pass sentence. Civil rulers should implement their decisions at the stake. The Inquisition was deemed a department of the cure of souls. Its object was not to burn heretics in the body but to save them by the fear of a brief temporal fire from the unquenchable flames. Chapter 5: The Ministry in the Time of the Continental Reformation, by Wilhelm Pauck Reformers led to an emphasis upon the proclamation of the Word -- preaching. All believers are considered ministers, but for the sake of order, certain ones, the ministers, are set aside for the office of preacher. This view of the rights of the individual implied a rejection of clericalism. At the beginning of the reformation there was no overall plan of organization. It was finally agreed that there was nothing of more prime importance than the Bible. A new social and vocational class, that of the Protestant minister soon developed and the scholar's gown became the garment of the ministry. Chapter 6: Priestly Ministries in the Modern Church, by Edward Rochie Hardy Jr. The role, requirements, ordination, status and even death of the priest/minister/clergy/presbyter...in modern times. Chapter 7: The Ministry in the Puritan Age, by Winthrop S. Hudson Formerly the clergy had been "priests," finding their primary responsibility at the altar; now they were "ministers," with preaching and pastoral care as their pre-eminent duties. Chapter 8: The Rise of the Evangelical Conception of the Ministry in America (1607-1850), by Sidney E. Mead The conception of the ministry, the practice, and why these came about in America during the two hundred and fifty years from the planting of the first permanent English colony in 1607 to the stabilization of the new nation on the verge of the Civil War. After serving a number of parishes he taught New Testament at Emory University, Fisk University, Hartford Theological Seminary, the University of Chicago, and finally at Union Theological Seminary from 1943 to 1966. His many books include Humanity and Divinity in Christ: A Study of Pattern in Christianity (Cambridge University Press 1967) and Marcion and the New Testament (1942).] The Greek word for "ministry" is diakonia; and it is significant that this term was in New Testament times, as it is still, the most favored way of referring inclusively to the church's workers and their work. When Paul gives us the first account we possess of the various functions being performed by individuals in the primitive church (I Cor. 12:4-30), he speaks of them as "varieties of ministry." (II Cor. 3:6, 11:23; Col. 1:7, 25, 4:7; II Cor. 5:18; etc.) The letter to the Ephesians, probably a generation later, in summing up the significance of "apostles," "prophets," "evangelists," "pastors and teachers," uses the same word: "for the work of the ministry." In Acts the apostolate itself is referred to as a diakonia (Acts 1:17; cf. Eph. 4;11-12). The word, whether in Greek or English, means simply "service;" and although it soon came to stand for a particular ecclesiastical office, the office of the deacon, its original more inclusive sense was never completely lost. Thus "Timothy" is enjoined to appoint "ministers" (in the sense of deacons) and to fulfill his own "ministry" in the other, more general, sense; and the same writer, the author of the Pastoral Epistles, can both describe the qualifications of the "deacons" and allude to the diakonia of Paul (I Tim. 1:12, 3:8, 12, 4:6; II Tim. 4:5). Thus also, even today, if we wish a term which includes the archbishop as well as the pastor of the humblest congregation, we speak of "the ministry." And so, in word at least, we obey Jesus' injunction: "Whoever would be great among you must be your servant [diakonos], and whoever would be first among you must be the slave of all" (Mark 10:43-44). In ancient usage diakonos primarily meant "waiter," and there are those who find the origins of the Christian ministry in the exigencies of the common meal.

    JVilliam Hubbard and the Providential Interpretation of History BY KENNETH B. MURDOCK ILLIAM HUBBARD (c. 1621-1704), a member of W the first class to graduate from Harvard, has long been recognized for his work as a colonial historian.* His Narrative of the Troubles with the Indians in New-England, published in 1677, was probably the best history of King Philip's War to be written by a New Englander who lived through it, and, according to Moses Coit Tyler, this book, "for its almost universal diffusion among the people, deserves the name of an American classic."^ Larger in scope, but less praised, is his General History of New- England from the Discovery to MDCLXXX, finished by 1682 but not published (and then imperfectly) until 1815.^ In ' See the Dictionary of American Biography, and J.     Slctccstcvsljtvc antr 10th January, 1855. A MEETING was held in the Town Library, Guild Hall, Leicester, for the purpose of establishing this society. The Venerable the Archdeacon of Leicester was in the chair. He requested Mr. Ingram (the honorary secretary, pro tempore) to read the letters received from various persons who had signified their desire to become members.—The first was from the Bishop of the Diocese, who also expressed his willingness to promote the objects of the society. The second was from Earl Howe, regretting his inability to attend. In a previous letter his lordship stated " I shall be very happy to be enrolled a member, and I assure you I take a decided interest in your proceedings/' Letters from the Rev. G. E. Gillett (mentioning that the Duke of Rutland would accept the office of Patron); from Sir F. G. Fowke (excus­ ing his non-attendance on the ground of ill health, which con­ fined him to his room); and from Mr. Geoffrey Palmer (apolo­ gizing for his inability to be present)—were also laid before the meeting. This part of the business being concluded, the venerable Chairman called on Mr. W. Perry-Herrick, who rose to move the first resolution. He expressed his gratification at being able to take part in the formation of a society which he felt certain would be attended with many beneficial effects, in conducing to the study of eccle­ siastical architecture and general antiquities in the county. He stated his regret that he was so little acquainted with either Archaeology or Architecture ; but that he knew sufficient to enable him to appreciate the value of the labours of those who had leisure to devote themselves more particularly to these interesting pur­ suits, and he hoped, by associating with them at the meetings of the society, he might improve his knowledge, and receive much information and instruction.

    Providence in the Life of John Hull: Puritanism and Commerce in Massachusetts Bay^ 16^0-1680 MARK VALERI n March 1680 Boston merchant John Hull wrote a scathing letter to the Ipswich preacher William Hubbard. Hubbard I owed him £347, which was long overdue. Hull recounted how he had accepted a bill of exchange (a promissory note) ftom him as a matter of personal kindness. Sympathetic to his needs, Hull had offered to abate much of the interest due on the bill, yet Hubbard still had sent nothing. 'I have patiently and a long time waited,' Hull reminded him, 'in hopes that you would have sent me some part of the money which I, in such a ftiendly manner, parted with to supply your necessities.' Hull then turned to his accounts. He had lost some £100 in potential profits from the money that Hubbard owed. The debt rose with each passing week.' A prominent citizen, militia officer, deputy to the General Court, and affluent merchant, Hull often cajoled and lectured his debtors (who were many), moralized at and shamed them, but never had he done what he now threatened to do to Hubbard: take him to court.
