Volume 3. From Vormärz to Prussian Dominance, 1815-1866 Report by the Prussian District Government in Koblenz on the Civic Condition of the Jewish population (1820) The report by the Prussian district government in Koblenz from January 25, 1820, establishes normative criteria for the granting of equal citizenship rights, including adherence to a particular faith, gainful employment, and the practice of certain cultural traditions. The author's hostile account abounds with anti-Jewish prejudices and includes accusations of unproductive profiteering, bribery, anti-nationalism, and religious fanaticism, etc., thus trying to show why Jews should be denied citizenship rights. § 1 [ . ] ad 1. In our administrative district [ . ] the legislation of the Jews is sharply divided into two parts: A) into one on the left and B) one on the right bank of the Rhine. ad A). The French Revolution [ . ] produced splendid results for the Jews, in that they acquired full citizenship according to the prevailing principle of equality. [ . ] This equality of rights, however far removed from causing the Jews to merge with the rest of the citizens, could not even lead them to strive to come closer. Now as ever a nation of their own, completely isolated by religious customs, ways of thinking and acting, their effect on the whole of society has become greater and more unfavorable as they have become less receptive to the advantages afforded to them by the Revolution and its accompanying spirit. The sickness was, in the meantime, [ . ] very quickly recognized, quite rightly did one seek the malady in religion and try to take hold of it by the root, to influence it with as much cleansing and ennobling power as possible. -

D. Cornell University 2010 My dissertation focuses on unstable, chronically unpublished prose texts by three key 20th century prose writers, quasi-novelistic texts whose material instability indicates a deep discomfort with the establishment of narrative authority qua narrative violence. I argue that Franz Kafka, Robert Walser and Thomas Bernhard, radically refunctionalized the device of interpolated “character monologue,” turning characters' speech from a narrative function, into a site where a text can be rewritten from within. In the Bildungsroman tradition, extended oral interpolations serve as an engine for the expansion and exposition of the plotted work, deepening the epic narrative world and exhaustively presenting a perspective that will be incorporated into biographical trajectory. I locate an estrangement of this practice: moments when oral monologues of fictional interlocutors “overgrow,” becoming an interventionary force that doubles, disrupts and re-frames the narrative discourse out of which it first sprouted. In showing how the labor of ‘world-making’ is split and spread across different competing layers of these texts, my dissertation contributes to the study of the narrative phenomenon of metalepsis. -

1 Jana Mikota Jüdische Schriftstellerinnen – wieder entdeckt: „Ich bin eine Dichterin, ja, das weiß ich“: Die Lyrikerin Gertrud Kolmar (1894-1943) Die Dichterin Gertrud Kolmar gehört zu den wichtigsten Lyrikern und Lyrikerinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Allein der Umstand, dass bereits 1955 die erste Gesamtausgabe ihres Werkes erscheint, zeigt die Wertschätzung, die sie in literarischen Kreisen genießt. Und trotz dieser Re- zeption bleibt die Dichterin im Verborgenen, denn während ihre Lyrik veröffentlicht und gelesen wurde, ist ihr Leben lange Zeit unbekannt – erst 1995 legt Johanna Woltmann mit Gertrud Kolmar. Leben und Werk eine umfassende Biografie der Schriftstellerin vor. Gertrud Kolmar wird am 10. Dezember 1894 in Berlin geboren. Ihr Vater ist der Rechtsanwalt und spätere Justizrat Ludwig Chodziesner, ihre Mutter Elise Schoenflies. Die Eltern stammen aus Posen und aus der Neumark und gehören zum Bürgertum jüdischer Herkunft; sie sind aufgeklärte Juden, die die deutsche Kultur und Sprache lieben, ohne jedoch die jüdische Identität zu verleugnen. Insbesondere die deutsche Literatur wird prägend für das geistige Leben von Gertrud Kolmar. Die Karriere des Vaters beginnt in den 1890er Jahren, und Gertrud Kolmar wächst im Wohlstand auf und erfährt eine bürgerliche Bildung. Diese frühen Berliner Jahre werden später von ihrem Cousin Walter Benjamin in seinem Band Berliner Kindheit um 1900 literarisch verarbeitet. Nichtsdestotrotz scheint sie ihre Kindheit auch als einsam empfunden zu haben, was möglicher- weise mit der Geburt der jüngeren Schwester Hilde zusammenhängen mag. Johanna Woltmann zeichnet in ihrer Biografie nach, dass Verlassenwerden, Verlassenheit und Einsamkeit Gertrud Kolmars Kindheit bestimmen, denn sie fühlt sich „bei der Mutter nicht hinreichend geborgen.“1 Kolmar besucht die Höhere Mädchenschule Klockow, die zu den besten Privatschulen Berlins gehört. -

By selectively tolerating and thereby emphasizing confessional differences, this colonial strategy was fundamentally about reaffirming French authority. It did so by providing colonial leaders with a pliant, ethical and practical framework to both justify and veil the costs of a violent conquest and by eliding ethnic and regional divisions with simplistic categories of religious belonging. By claiming to protect mosques and synagogues and by lauding their purported respect for venerated figures, military leaders believed they would win the strategic support of local communities—and therefore secure the fate of France on African soil. Scholars have long focused on the latter period of French Empire, offering metropole-centric narratives of imperial development. Those who have ii studied the early conquest have done so only through a singular or, to a lesser extent, comparative lens. French colonial governance did not advance according to the dictates of Paris or by military directive in Algiers.
