THE TRIBE, AND INTERTRIBAL RELATIONS IN AUSTRALIA \X THE TRIBE, AND INTERTRIBAL RELATIONS IN AUSTRALIA BY GERALD C. WHEELER, B.A. LATE MARTIN WHITE STUDENT IN SOCIOLOGY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON WITH A PREFATORY NOTE BY EDWARD A. WESTERMARCK, Ph.D. PROFESSOR OF SOCIOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON LONDON JOHN MURRAY, ALBEMARLE STREET, W. 1910 Q^'O' / PREFATORY NOTE The subject of the present essay indicates the kind of research which is encouraged at the Uni- versity of London so far as the lower stages of civiUzation are concerned. Next to sociological field-work—to which Mr. Wheeler also has recently devoted himself during a year's stay among the natives of the Solomon Islands—there are, within this branch of study, no other investigations so urgently needed as monographs on some definite class of social phenomena or institutions among a certain group of related tribes. A comparative treatment of some social institution as it exists throughout the uncivilized races of the world undoubtedly has its value. It bears out general resemblances as well as local or racial differences. It also, in many cases, enables the specialist to explain facts which he could hardly understand in full if his knowledge were restricted to a limited area.

  • KUOT a Non-Austronesian Language of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea
Topics in the grammar of KUOT a non-Austronesian language of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea Eva Lindström PhD dissertation Department of Linguistics, Stockholm University, 106 91 Stockholm Doctoral dissertation 2002 Department of Linguistics Stockholms universitet 106 91 Stockholm Sweden © 2002 Eva Lindström ISBN 91-7265-459-7 Cover design: Eva Lindström & Anne Gailit Printed by Akademitryck AB, Edsbruk 2002 Abstract This thesis describes certain areas in the grammar of the little-known Kuot language, spoken by some 1,500 people in New Ireland Province in Papua New Guinea. Kuot is an isolate, and is the only non-Austronesian (Papuan) language of that province. The analyses presented here are based on original data from 18 months of linguistic fieldwork. The first chapter provides an overview of Kuot grammar, and gives details of earlier mentions of the language, and of data collection and the fieldwork situa- tion. The second chapter presents information about the prehistory and history of the area, the social system, kinship system and culture of Kuot speakers, as well as dialectal variation and prognosis of survival of the language. Chapter three treats Kuot phonology, with particular emphasis on the factors that govern allophonic variation, and on the expression of word stress and the functions of intonation. Word classes and the criteria used to define them are presented in Chapter four, which also contains a discussion of types of morphemes in Kuot. The last chapter describes in some detail the class of nouns in Kuot, their declensions, non-singular formation, and the properties of grammatical gender. Appendices give the full set of person-marking forms in Kuot, a transcription of a recorded text with interlinear glossing and translation, the Swadesh 100-word list for Kuot, and diagrams of kin relations and terminology.

  • The Magic and Mysteries of Mexico Or the Arcane Secrets and Occult Lore of the Ancient Mexicans and Maya
THE MAGIC AND MYSTERIES OF MEXICO OR THE ARCANE SECRETS AND OCCULT LORE OF THE ANCIENT MEXICANS AND MAYA BY LEWIS SPENCE AUTHOR OF THE CIVILIZATION OF ANCIENT MEXICO," "THE MYTHS OF MEXICO AND PERU," "THE PROBLEM OF ATLANTIS," "THE HISTORY OF ATLANTIS," "THE MYSTERIES OF BRITAIN," "THE MYSTERIES OF EGYPT," ETC. 3. 43 LONDON: RIDER & CO. PATERNOSTER ROW, E.G. 4 Printed in Great Britain at The Mayflower Press, Plymouth. William Brendon & Son Ltd TEZCATLIPOCA AS A WER-JAGUAR TO W. G. BURN MURDOCH, ESQ. OP WEST LOCH, BERWICKSHIRE ARTIST AND PATRIOTIC SCOTSMAN PREFACE the first effort to include in one volume all that is known regarding the arcane know- THIS,ledge and occult lore of the ancient Mexican peoples and their neighbours, the Maya of Central America and Yucatan, is the result of more than thirty-five years of research in a sphere which has richly repaid the writer by the companionship of its fascination, and which he hopes will prove equally absorbing to the reader who seeks passing amusement and to the serious student. The book is so compiled as to be useful to both, popular in its general treatment, yet sufficiently authoritative in its sources and data to be of avail either to the practical anthropologist or the student of Mysticism. The historical passages essential to the introduction of the main subject are necessarily sketchy, but embody sufficient information to permit the reader ignorant of Central American chronicles to approach the consideration of the curious knowledge of the more enlightened peoples of Isthmian America in the fields of pure Magic, Astrology, Witchcraft, Demonology and Symbolism.

  • The Golden Bough by Sir James George Frazer 1922
THE GOLDEN BOUGH BY SIR JAMES GEORGE FRAZER 1922 PREFACE THE primary aim of this book is to explain the remarkable rule which regulated the succes- sion to the priesthood of Diana at Aricia. When. I first set myself to solve the problem more hthan thirty years ago, I thought that the solution could be propounded very briefly, but I soon found that to render it probable or even intelligible it was necessary to discuss certain more general questions, some of which had hardly been broached before. In successive editions the discussion of these and kindred topics has occupied more and more space, the enquiry has branched out in more and more directions, until the two volumes of the original work have expanded into twelve. Meantime a wish has often been expressed that the book should be issued in a more compendious form. This abridgment is an attempt to meet the wish and thereby to bring the work within the range of a wider circle of readers. While the bulk of the book has been greatly reduced, I have endeavoured to retain its leading principles, together with an amount of evidence sufficient to illustrate them clearly. The language of the original has also for the most part been preserved, though here and there the exposition has been somewhat condesed. In order to keep as much of the text as possible I have sacrificed all the notes, and with them all exact reference to my authorities. Readers who desire to ascertain the source of any particular statement must therefore consult the larger work, which is fully documented and provided with a complete bibliography.
