Text by PhD Raimonds Cerüzis The world’s oldest civilisations have understood that a nation’s greatest treasure is its people. Latvia is an exceptional example of how great people and great ideas are often born in relatively small countries. Over the centuries, Latvia’s geopolitical situation has been shaped by its strategic Baltic Sea location at the crossroads of trade and conflicting large power interests. The dynamic forces that forged Latvia’s turbulent history have produced a unique set of values, traits and characteristics in its people and have led to their recognition around the world. This is just a brief look at the achievements and contributions of some of the world famous scientists, inventors, artists, athletes, and businessmen whose lives originated or were influenced by Latvia. Also notable are those exhibiting a characteristically Latvian attribute—a passion for exploration, innovation and adventure. The invention of Technical and scientific nitrate fertilisers and a c h i e v e m e n t s Wilhelm Ostwald ( 1 8 5 3 Ð 1 9 3 2 ) The outstanding Rîga-born chemist Wilhelm Ostwald, professor at The world’s smallest mechanical camera, Rîga Polytechnic and Leipzig University, worked intensively from 1875 on the Minox, and its inventor the analysis of catalytic chemical processes and discovered the Walter Zapp fundamental laws of homogenous catalysis of acids and bases, without (1905Ð2003) which the modern-day chemical industry is unimaginable. The method of obtaining nitric acid devised by Ostwald (the ‘Ostwald Process’) was first applied during the First World War for making explosives. -

Introduction This report discuss the issue of ethnic equality and governance in respect to socio- political stability in Latvia from the historic perspective. Latvia, just like the overwhelming majority of modern states is multi-ethnic and multi-cultural country. Latvian history and geography is a relevant factor in order to understand the dynamics of ethnic relations and ethnopolitics. Geopolitically, Latvia is squeezed on the shores of the Baltic between larger powers, Russia, Germany, Poland, and Sweden. Time to time, each of these countries was eager to dominate the region and its population by political, economic, and cultural means thus influencing Latvia’s ethnic composition as well as ethnic relations. During the two World Wars of the 20th century, country was twice turned into extensive war zone. It has experienced several occupations and dominance of totalitarian ideologies. Latvia was ruled by democratic, authoritarian, and totalitarian regimes one after another. It has experienced market economy as well as centralized communist rule. Its population went through economically wealthy periods and faced hunger. People of Latvia have experienced respect and humanity in their mutual relations just like they have been facing terror, humiliation, deportations and death. Most of political analysts would argue that these are not conditions favouring independent and democratic statehood. Indeed, the world, even Europe knows dozens of ethnic groups and nations much larger in size and in economic power which never have experienced their own statehood. -

I The Museum of Modern Art 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart No. 116 FOR RELEASE: September 2U, I969 HUGE SOVIET FILM SHOW AT MUSEUM OF MODERN ART The most comprehensive showing of Soviet films ever given here will be presented by The Museum of Modern Art over seventy-two days, with daily showings except Wednesday, in the Museum Auditorium, starting September 25 and ending November 11. The Soviet Film Show was made possible through the efforts of Willard Van Dyke, the Director of the Museum's Department of Film in co operation with Victor Privato, Director of Gosfilmofond, the Soviet St-rte Film Archive. It in cludes forty-nine motion pictures, covering almost 60 years, from I909 to I96T Several of them never have been shown before in this country. Represented in this retrospective are works of the three most renowned film-makers: Vsevolod Pudovkin's "Storm Over Asia" (I928); Sergei Eisenstein's "Potemkin" (I925) nd "Ivan the Terrible" Part I (I9UU) and Part II (I9U6); and Alexander Dovzhenko's "Arsenal" (I929). Other maior works include "Fragment of an Empire" (I929), "The Road to Life" (1951), "Chapayev" (I93U), and "The Childhood of Maxim Gorky" (1938). The sources of these films are Gosfilmofond, which has made special prints from the original negatives for this occasion, and the archives of the Museum, which according to Mr. Van Dyke has the largest collection of Russian films outside the SoA'iet Union. Mr. Van Dyke indicated that a comparable retrospective of American films, from their inception to the present time, will take place in Moscow in the near future. -
1 Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears Is a 1979 Melodrama and Comedy
Moscow Does Not Believe In Tears is a 1979 melodrama and comedy Soviet film directed by Vladimir Menshov. The stars include Vera Alentova (who played Katerina Tikhomirova) and Aleksey Batalov (who played Gosha). Valentin Chernykh wrote the film and the cinematographer was Igor Slabnevich. In 1980, the film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It was Menshov’s second and most critically acclaimed, feature film, his first being 1976’s Practical Joke. The film is all about human relations and how the atmosphere of a country in regards to economics and all other facets of a society in which people find themselves living in at any given time affect them. In the case of the film, this time is set in, initially 1958 Moscow and then a more subdued, complex and difficult 1979 Russia. Here we see the aging and development of a specific group of people in relation to the aging and development of their city of Moscow. How the two interact as well as the insular reactions between the specific group of men and women, provide a unique look at universal interaction between any people. Specifically, the role of women is extremely fascinating and dynamic in the film. The three leading women are Katerina Tikhomirova (played by Vera Alentova), Lyudmila (played by Irina Muravyova) and Antonina (played by Raisa Ryazanova). All three move to Moscow from smaller towns to achieve their dreams. The most important relationship is between Katerina Tikhomirova and Gosha (played by Aleksey Batalov). Gosha represents the man Katerina has been looking for her whole life, and apparently the key that is needed to fulfill her, the missing link in her life that can not be replaced by anything else: success at work, valuable friendships, a healthy daughter, economic stability, etc. -
