SEPTEMBER 2021 Northampton District Newsletter -5- Membership News

We are beginning our fall recruiting campaign “Escape the Indoors” for 2021. We are asking all packs to email Patti Davis davispr91@outlook. com and Michael Wells Michael.wells@scout- ing.org with their unit’s Joining Night informa- tion. Please provide your unit number, date and time of your event, the location of the event (school/church name, full address, and city) as well as a unit contact (name, phone, and email). Either a member of our district committee or a member of the district commissioner staff will be at your joining night event to help you through the process and answer any questions either you or parents may have. We will provide you the name, phone, and email of the district volunteer who will be at your event.

As a reminder, start reviewing your unit’s Youth Protection Training (YPT) and PA15 clearances. If they have already expired or will before January 31, 2022, have your volun- teers start updating them now. Remember YPT is only good for 2 years and PA15 for 5 years. Unit Key 3’s and Unit Training Chairs can review the status of YPT and other training for all leaders in their respective units through their my.scouting accounts.

Do you have new volunteer leaders? Refer them to the training tab on the Minsi Trails Council website for a quick guide to both online and in-person training requirements for all volunteer positions. The guide will provide you with the course number and name for all training required for your position. If in-person training is required, check the Council calendar for class schedules.

Gone are the days of juggling den leader guides and other hard-copy resources. Now it’s all right there in Scoutbook! From organizing meetings for the year, to prepar- ing for the next meeting, to tracking attendance and advancement. You can even communicate with parents of absent Scouts about what their kids need to do at home to get caught up. Check out https:// www.scouting.org/landing/den-leader-experience/.

Scouts BSA Leaders – Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills is scheduled for September 25th. Register on the council website.

Cub Scout Leaders – BALOO training is scheduled for October 16th. Register on the council website. SEPTEMBER 2021 Northampton District Newsletter -6- Membership News

Northampton and Lehigh Districts partnered to set up a Scout recruiting display at Ag Hall during the Allentown Fair. Our thanks to Diane Lariar, District Director—Lehigh District and Irwin Lebo Membership Chair for Lehigh District for allow- ing us to participate in the event.

Northampton District is participating in the 2nd annu- al Northampton County Festival on Saturday, October 16th at Louise Moore Park. We are looking for units who would like to volunteer. Can you set up and run an activity, run a mini–Pinewood Derby, balloon races, knot tying, etc? If you are interested either as a unit or an adult volunteer, please contact either Patti Davis at [email protected] or Michael Wells at Michael. [email protected]. This is a great opportunity to showcase Scouting and to recruit new families to our program.

1. Leadership Inventory a. What positions in the pack are vacant? Obtain a job description for each. What qualities should these leaders possess? Use this information as a guide to identify new volunteers. Remember, approaching a person one-on-one is always better than asking in a large group setting. b. Recruit a Unit Membership Coordinator

2. Planning a. Work with your District Membership Committee, District professional, and Pack leadership committee to design your plans. b. Set a date, time, and location. The best locations are often the school from which you’re (primarily) recruiting or your chartered partner’s facility. Be sure to have permission for the event in advance for marketing purposes. c. Be aware of available resources: flyers, yard signs, church bulletin inserts, recruiting incentives, etc. Order the recruiting materials you’d like to use from the Council – these are FREE!

3. Marketing a. Publicize your event through friends, churches, PTA meetings, supermarkets, pediatricians’ offices, local newspapers, other civic organizations, and most importantly, on-line social media. b. If allowed, schedule and hold a Scouting Presentation at your school on the day of your event. To be most effective, this talk shouldn’t be any earlier than 2 days prior to the meeting. c. Assemble a packet of information for new parents including the unit calendar, leadership contact information, the Family Talent Survey, and unit expectations such as requiring parents to assist, dues information, and necessary program materials like uniforms and handbooks.

4. The Event a. Plan an activity for the youth (about 30 to 45 minutes long) in a separate area away from your talk with the parents. When seeking staff to be responsible, remember that this is an excellent way to engage Den Chiefs. b. Have pictures of pack activities displayed or running on a loop on a computer/projected onto a screen. c. Follow a simple agenda (see attached sample) and script: divide parents/youth into their separate activities, explain Scouting in general, the importance of parental involvement, finances, discuss leadership vacancies and talk about their job descriptions, collect registration, and announce follow-up meetings. d. Make sure the youth are having fun – a well-planned activity will ensure that their experience with Scouting is a positive one and they will want to return for more. e. Don’t extend the meeting with a group Q&A session; instead, answer questions individually and try to have other “seasoned” parents there to help and share their great experiences with Scouting. f. Have families complete and submit youth applications and associated fees, as well as Family Talent Surveys

SEPTEMBER 2021 Northampton District Newsletter -8- 5. Follow-up a. Submit the signed youth applications and fees to the District Representative at your event that night or to the Council Service Centers within 2 days. b. Hold a parent meeting within a week of your event to finalize recruiting (both youth and adult), reinforce new leader trainings and background checks, and announce the next unit meeting or other upcoming activities. Make it clear that new Scouts need to be registered in order to attend future unit events. c. If parents remain hesitant to sign-up, contact the family within a few days. Have Den Leaders do the follow-up, especially if the families know each other. d. Maintain contact with all Den Leaders to ensure an exciting and engaging program – monitor attendance and advancement, two key indicators. e. Hold a 2nd recruiting event the following month.

BSA SAFETY MOMENT USING A SAFETY MOMENT IN SCOUTING ACTIVITIES

SUMMARY What do nuclear power plants, construction sites, aircraft carriers, and many hospitals have in common with Scouting? All constantly look for ways to eliminate hazards that could be life altering or fatal. One tool used by many safety-conscious groups is the safety moment or safety briefing that starts each meeting or activity with a pause to discuss a hazard or risk that can be prevented. The safety moment focuses the attention of the group on safety and how to achieve it. That’s the “why” of the safety moment. Let’s address the who, what, when, where, and how next.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Who can deliver a safety moment? Anyone who is willing to be prepared and to step up. Ideally, each Scout or Scouter (with some preparation) could step up and make a difference within his or her unit or group.

When and where should a safety briefing be delivered? At the beginning of a meeting or just before an activity—especially one that has some risk such as shooting, climbing, or aquatic activities.

What makes a great safety moment? Almost anything that focuses or educates the audience on a safety topic. The BSA publishes several safety moments, and new topics are being developed on a regular basis. Other topics can include the use of checklists or safety tools such as PAUSE or focus on something such as hydration, safe driving, or simply the location of fire extinguishers or evacuation routes. The Guide to Safe Scouting, the Scouting Safely website, and the Health and Safety newsletters are also great sources of ideas. If you have information that’s accurate, don’t shy away from discussing injuries or other incidents that occurred during a recent outing as long as the focus is on learning and prevention. Make it simple and easy to understand, and help the learners know how to apply the message.

How should the message be delivered? All messages should be delivered using facts and simple language and should be appropriate to the audience. Using a handout, slides, or a demonstration will help assure that those who hear the message understand it and know how to apply it. The message should be delivered in just a few minutes. Don’t belabor the point or make it difficult.
