  • Sala Di Michelangelo E Della Scultura Del Cinquecento 2

  • THE DECORATION and FURNISHING of the CITY No
THE DECORATION AND FURNISHING OF THE CITY No. 5.--Fountains 'Vater is an essential attribute to every landscape or architectural composrtion, No park or garden is strictly complete which does not possess its cascade, fountain, basin, and canal, and no city which pretends to be artistically embellished is fully adorned without waterways, rond points, drinking fountains, and jets d'eau. The city which may fitly display fountains must abound in pleasure places and be something more than a commercial town. It must have prospered and developed beyond this elementary stage. The purpose of the Iountain is non-utilitarian; it transcends all mundane ideas.· It is a work of art set up for art's. sake alone. 'Vater is animate, and a fountain is a living thing; little wonder that poets and artists ever people them with gods, demi-goels, animals, and nymphs. Schemes for the beautiful treatment of water have ever been created during the great artistic epochs of the world. Ancient Rome was a city running with water, but the fountains of Rome have long ago been obliterated and lost, though numerous remaine of sculptured baths and basins, spouts and vases have been preserved. Probably the earliest of the fountains which are still running with water and which are of greatest importance to us as such to-day, are the Italian fountains of the 15th and 16th centuries, most of which are to be seen in the gardens of the villas around Florence and Rome. From the highest terrace of these gardeIls water pours forth from a chateau d'eau, a grotto, art archway, or from the cleft in a rock; it becomes a cascade and is artfully.., broken into a series of falls ; it pirouettes, tumbles, and empties itself into a deep pool, then, disappearing it reappears on the lowest terrace as a jet, or as a thousand jets throwing UF) glistening spray, and finally settles in a "bain des Dieux." SUCll is the treatment of water in the world's oldest gardens and parks; particularly fine examples are to be seen in the gardens of the Villa Torlonia and in the Villa d'Este.

  • Alla Villa Di Pratolino E Nei Giardini Del Castello Dei Gondi a Noisy-Le-Roi
Marco Calafati “Acconciar grotti” alla villa di Pratolino e nei giardini del castello dei Gondi a Noisy-le-Roi The “Libro delle bestie di Firenze e fabbrica di Pratolino” of 1575 which is kept at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, includes the name of the Gondi as administrators of the accounts of the construction. In the same period in Noisy-le-Roi, on the hill north of the valley of Versailles and on the edge of the Marly forest, Alberto Gondi (1522-1602), Duke of Retz and Marshal of France, right arm of the Queen mother, commissioned the construction of a castle with large gardens, which was later destroyed. In Noisy, Alberto Gondi began the construction of a grotto represented in a series of engravings by Jean Marot (1619-1679), but the recent archaeological excavations carried out in 2017 by Bruno Bentz, show that the architectural plan was possibly inverted. In the creation of the grotto, evidence was found of Florentine craftsmanship and the mixing of Italian models with the French . " iAulhor of " In the Heel of Italy WITH 109 ILLUSTRATIONS NEW YORK ; ' McBRIDE, NAST & COMPANY ^ y 1914 ,iMvMV NA (^Ay n^/i/j reserved) In all ages there have been some excellent workmen, and some excellent work done.—Walter Pater. PREFACE is commonly supposed that the purpose of a preface is to IT explain the scope of a book to those who do not read so far as the first page. There is a touch of cynicism in such an opinion which makes one loth to accept it, but I prefer to meet my troubles half way by stating at the outset what I have emphasized in my last chapter—that this book is not in any way an attempt to create a wholesale revival of Baroque Architecture in England. It is simply a history of a complex and neglected period, and has been prepared in the uncertain intervals of an architectural practice. The difficulty of the work has been increased by the fact that the subject has never been dealt with as a whole in any language previously. Gurlitt in his Geschichte des Barockstiles, published in 1887, covered a considerable part of the ground, but his work is very scarce and expensive. To students his volumes may be recommended for their numerous plans, but for details and general views they are less valuable. In recent years several fine mono- graphs have appeared dealing with Baroque buildings in specific districts, and very recently in a new international series the principal buildings of the period in Germany and Italy have been illustrated.

Unusual &Green 10 ideas for the International Year of Sustainable Tourism Index Introduction 4 A cycling weekend 6 Sleep in trees like Tarzan 9 Ecological and glamour vacation in a tent 11 Natural pools and dreamy hot springs 13 Italy’s top 8 scenic rail journeys 15 Green Holidays near the sea 17 Secret places and hidden corners of Italy 20 Walks to regenerate the soul 22 Farm holidays 24 Romantic getaways: castles and chalets 27 Introduction Tourism is changing, away from mass tourism we have known in recent years and becoming more natural and deep. Becoming sustainable tourism. The change taking place primarily responds to climatic and environmental urgency: the tourism sector is growing exponentially every year and so the pollution linked to it. In Europe, the tourism industry is the fourth largest source of C02 emissions, mainly due to transport and accommodations, with dramatic consequences on our planet. But sustainable tourism also responds to a need of the tourists themselves: those traveling now seek the authenticity, want to explore nature, want to share stories and emotions, they are aware of their environmental and social impact. These are some of the reasons why the United Nations declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism, reiterating its importance in the future of the planet and its development. Thus, 2017 marks the turning point, an opportunity to permanently change the way we travel, making the right choices for the environment and future generations even on holiday. It is the right time to fully develop the first definition of sustainable tourism, dating back to 1988, by World Tourism Organization: "The tourist activities are sustainable when they develop themselves in order to remain viable in a tourist area for an unlimited time, do not alter the environment (natural, social and artistic) and not hinder or inhibit the growth of other social and economic activities”.
