Like no other feature in the garden, a small pond of water lilies, cattails and Japanese Koi can transform and ordinary outdoor living space into an oasis. Ancient Egyptians and Far Eastern cultures were of the first to develop water gardens in the landscape. It was common to find lotus plants, papyrus, water lilies and other aquatic plants used to accent and focus on man’s relationship with nature. Since that time, Europeans have traditionally incorporated water gardens into the landscape and used Roman and Greek statuary to create formal pools and spectacular fountains such as those found at Tivoli Gardens in Rome and Versailles in France. Still a common practice in European countries, water gardens are finding a place in American gardens today. Fast becoming a favorite hobby for experienced and beginning gardeners, a water garden can be quite sophisticated with a series of waterfalls and pond levels, as interesting as a single 3 to 4 foot pool in the corner of the yard, or as simple as a half wooden barrel filled with floating plants and small water lilies. Installation of a Water Garden The most popular type of water garden installed today uses a synthetic liner to form the sides and bottom. There is very little time involved in installing this type water garden because these materials are lightweight, portable and adaptable to a variety of shapes and sizes. However, for one which will give years of enjoyment you will need to begin by making some careful plans. -

Its two chambers – the National Council and the Council of States –have the same powers but meet separately. Federal Assembly The National The Council Council of States The National Council • The National Council, or “lower chamber”, represents the people and comprises 200 members who are elected by popular vote for a four-year term. The number of representatives sent by each canton depends on the size of its population. As a rule of thumb, each canton may send one elected representative to the National Council for roughly every 40,000 inhabitants. • The Federal Constitution guarantees at least one seat per canton, even if the canton has fewer than 40,000 residents. The cantons of Appenzell-Ausserrhoden, AppenzellInnerrhoden, Obwalden, Nidwalden, Uri and Glarus send one National Council member each, whereas Zurich, the most heavily populated canton, currently has 35 seats. The Council of States • The Council of States, or “upper chamber”, represents the cantons and comprises 46 members, who are also elected directly by the people for a four-year term. Regardless of their population size, the cantons send two deputies, with the exception of the six half-cantons of AppenzellAusserrhoden, Appenzell-Innerrhoden, Obwalden, Nidwalden, Basel-Stadt and Basel-Land, which send one deputy each. • Council of States deputies represent their cantons but are not bound by any instructions from their cantonal government or parliament. -

Spring Break in Paris Friday, March 21st to Sunday, March 30th, 2014 What you’ll do . Friday, March 21st – You’ll depart from Huntsville or Nashville International Airport bound for Europe. Usually there is a stop in one of the major cities of the east coast in order to catch your trans-Atlantic flight to Paris. Saturday, March 22nd – After flying through the night, you’ll land at Charles de Gaulle International Airport. After collecting your luggage and passing through customs, you’ll transfer into the city, usually by train. On evening one, there’s a short time for resting and refreshing at the hotel before heading out into the city for dinner and some sightseeing. You will ascend the 58-story Tour Montparnasse for the best views of Paris as the sun goes down and the lights come on in the city. Sunday, March 23rd– You’ll visit the Royal Palace of Versailles, just outside of Paris. In addition to touring the palace itself, you’ll want to visit the gardens, since Sunday is the only day the world-famous fountains are turned on. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Grand and Petit Trianon, small palaces built by the king on the grounds of Versailles in order to escape the pressures of palace life. Also not to be missed is the village-like hameau of Marie Antoinette. Later, you’ll head back to Paris for dinner and a visit to the Sacré-Coeur Basilica in Montmartre, the bohemian quarter of Paris. In Montmartre, you’ll also visit the Place du Tertre, where an artist will paint your portrait for a price. -

Paris History Early History Julius Caesar conquered Paris in 52 B.C. It was then a fishing village, called Lutetia Parisiorum (the Parisii were a Gallic tribe), on the Île de la Cité. Under the Romans the town spread to the left bank and acquired considerable importance under the later emperors. The vast catacombs under Montparnasse and the baths (now in the Cluny Mus.) remain from the Roman period. Legend says that St. Denis, first bishop of Paris, was martyred on Montmartre (hence the name) and that in the 5th cent. St. Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris, preserved the city from destruction by the Huns. On several occasions in its early history Paris was threatened by barbarian and Norman invasions, which at times drove the inhabitants back to the Île de la Cité. Clovis I and several other Merovingian kings made Paris their capital; under Charlemagne it became a center of learning. In 987, Hugh Capet, count of Paris, became king of France. The Capetians firmly established Paris as the French capital. The city grew as the power of the French kings increased. In the 11th cent. the city spread to the right bank. During the next two centuries—the reign of Philip Augustus (1180–1223) is especially notable for the growth of Paris—streets were paved and the city walls enlarged; the first Louvre (a fortress) and several churches, including Notre-Dame, were constructed or begun; and the schools on the left bank were organized into the Univ. of Paris. THE DECORATION AND FURNISHING OF THE CITY No. 5.--Fountains 'Vater is an essential attribute to every landscape or architectural composrtion, No park or garden is strictly complete which does not possess its cascade, fountain, basin, and canal, and no city which pretends to be artistically embellished is fully adorned without waterways, rond points, drinking fountains, and jets d'eau. The city which may fitly display fountains must abound in pleasure places and be something more than a commercial town. It must have prospered and developed beyond this elementary stage. The purpose of the Iountain is non-utilitarian; it transcends all mundane ideas.· It is a work of art set up for art's. sake alone. 'Vater is animate, and a fountain is a living thing; little wonder that poets and artists ever people them with gods, demi-goels, animals, and nymphs. Schemes for the beautiful treatment of water have ever been created during the great artistic epochs of the world. Ancient Rome was a city running with water, but the fountains of Rome have long ago been obliterated and lost, though numerous remaine of sculptured baths and basins, spouts and vases have been preserved. Probably the earliest of the fountains which are still running with water and which are of greatest importance to us as such to-day, are the Italian fountains of the 15th and 16th centuries, most of which are to be seen in the gardens of the villas around Florence and Rome. From the highest terrace of these gardeIls water pours forth from a chateau d'eau, a grotto, art archway, or from the cleft in a rock; it becomes a cascade and is artfully.., broken into a series of falls ; it pirouettes, tumbles, and empties itself into a deep pool, then, disappearing it reappears on the lowest terrace as a jet, or as a thousand jets throwing UF) glistening spray, and finally settles in a "bain des Dieux." SUCll is the treatment of water in the world's oldest gardens and parks; particularly fine examples are to be seen in the gardens of the Villa Torlonia and in the Villa d'Este. -

Representations of power in the stables at Houghton Hall, Norfolk, and John Wootton’s Sir Robert Walpole with his Hunter and Groom When Sir Robert Walpole first rose to political power from humble origins, he had much to prove to the world. In order to consolidate his position as Prime Minister against the backdrop of the new Hanoverian dynasty, Walpole capitalised on extravagant displays of power, impressing political peers and local squires alike by inviting them for entertainment and hunting at his estate at Houghton Hall, Norfolk. This was hardly coincidental: although relatively unexplored in scholarship, historically, horses served as vehicles to showcase a man’s elite social standing and ability to govern. However, it was also important for Walpole to recognise the limits of his power in order to demonstrate that he was no threat to the monarchy. This study examines the stable architecture at Houghton Hall and the equestrian portrait of Walpole by John Wootton (1726) in order to demonstrate the extent to which equestrian representations could function as a metaphor for both power and submission, which is particularly pertinent when applied to the hierarchical relations between Prime Minister and King. riting to the Prince of Wales on July 14, 1731, Lord Hervey would remark that Sir Robert Walpole’s Houghton Hall in Norfolk was a paradigm of W‘taste, expense, state and parade.’1 This comment in itself is perhaps unsurprising – country houses, after all, have always been about display, founded and embellished as part of a conscious mission to establish a dynastic ‘line’.2 However, what makes this comment so interesting in Walpole’s case is that as the first Prime Minister, Walpole was essentially a commoner who had risen to power.
