Munich, 13. July 2015 ............................................. (Signature of the Thesis Candidate) Web-Tracking is an incredible big business focusing on the collection of as many user data as possible and use it - among other scenarios - for hand-crafted advertising. Trackers are constantly seeking to improve their tracking mechanisms in order to be able to gather more user-based data. The most recent developments of this research are fingerprinting techniques: Browser- and Canvas-Fingerprinting. Fingerprinting techniques differ to the de facto standard for implementing Web-Tracking - Cookies - in several aspects. Firstly, it is very hard to notice that a web site is fingerprinting the user. Secondly, even if the user knows that he is being fingerprinted, it is very hard to effectively block it. Lastly, fingerprinting techniques enable the trackers to recognize users, which consequently leads to even more user-based data, because this enables them to track users among different web sites. Using the collected user data facilitates the trackers to create detailed user profiles, which clearly threatens the privacy of users. In order to increase privacy being endangered by Web- Tracking, the first step required is to be able to detect the use of fingerprinting techniques.

  • OSINT Handbook September 2020
OPEN SOURCE INTELLIGENCE TOOLS AND RESOURCES HANDBOOK 2020 OPEN SOURCE INTELLIGENCE TOOLS AND RESOURCES HANDBOOK 2020 Aleksandra Bielska Noa Rebecca Kurz, Yves Baumgartner, Vytenis Benetis 2 Foreword I am delighted to share with you the 2020 edition of the OSINT Tools and Resources Handbook. Once again, the Handbook has been revised and updated to reflect the evolution of this discipline, and the many strategic, operational and technical challenges OSINT practitioners have to grapple with. Given the speed of change on the web, some might question the wisdom of pulling together such a resource. What’s wrong with the Top 10 tools, or the Top 100? There are only so many resources one can bookmark after all. Such arguments are not without merit. My fear, however, is that they are also shortsighted. I offer four reasons why. To begin, a shortlist betrays the widening spectrum of OSINT practice. Whereas OSINT was once the preserve of analysts working in national security, it now embraces a growing class of professionals in fields as diverse as journalism, cybersecurity, investment research, crisis management and human rights. A limited toolkit can never satisfy all of these constituencies. Second, a good OSINT practitioner is someone who is comfortable working with different tools, sources and collection strategies. The temptation toward narrow specialisation in OSINT is one that has to be resisted. Why? Because no research task is ever as tidy as the customer’s requirements are likely to suggest. Third, is the inevitable realisation that good tool awareness is equivalent to good source awareness. Indeed, the right tool can determine whether you harvest the right information.

  • Working with Webnode
Workshop 28th February 2008 Page 1 http://blog.larkin.net.au/ Working with WebNode What is WebNode? WebNode is an online tool that allows you to create functional and elegant web sites. The interesting thing about WebNode is that fact that you do not need to know the intricacies of html, css, xml or javascript in order to create the web site. You do not need to install or use any software. Prior to the development of online tools such as WebNode users had to master web construction tools such as Dreamweaver, Microsoft Frontpage and others in order to develop a web site. Now, all the user needs to do is to put their existing ideas in order, gather together the necessary words and images and publish. WebNode is forgiving and supported with a variety of plug-ins and widgets that together can make the job of online publishing straightforward, rewarding and fun. The construction process involves the use of templates that you can alter to meet your needs as well as drag and drop elements. In addition to this WebNode provides you with a rich statistics package that will help you to gain an understanding of the numbers and demographics of visitors to your site. Getting started Open a web browser on your computer. This can be Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera and so on. It does not matter whether you are using a PC with Windows or Vista. You could be using a Macintosh. It makes no difference. Concerns regarding operating systems and compatibility are no longer an issue with these online tools.

Nowadays, the Internet is passing through a trasformation showing its new capabilities and web applications design con- cepts. Many Web 2.0 services are presently considered as platforms designed to support creating new ones – the so called mashups. Instruments like open APIs and algorithmic data management form a quite new kind of web applications, sometimes titled infoware. The bulk of social sites has turned the Internet into a main market for processing applica- tions. This thesis is mainly focused on the analysis of the Web 2.0 and the steps leading to the current situation. It presents the principles the current Web stands on both from the view of a Web 2.0 service structure and technologies it is built on.
