Though my interest in Henry Miller has never been weak or in danger of becoming so, Roger Jackson's dedication to Miller and his works has consistently been an inspiration. He compiled and published the only bibliography of primary sources for Miller that exists. Its comprehensiveness demonstrates Mr. Jackson's commitment to furthering study of Miller. Mr. Jackson has, additionally, published works by Miller that were previously unpublished, as well as new works on Miller. One of their most unfortunate common traits was their lack of acceptance by the literary establishment. Both of them had unfair one-dimensional reputations which largely have remained intact, years after their deaths. For example, Miller was always seen as a writer of "dirty books," his early master­ pieces such as Tropic of Cancer being regarded by many as little more than the literary equivalent of a raunchy stag film. Kerouac was viewed by many critics, and much of the pUblic, as nothing more than a hard-drinking, hell-raising hoodlum transcribing the "hep" aphorisms of his "beatnik" friends.

    Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.

Parents and others complained about the book's sexual content, offensive lan- guage, religious viewpoint and violence. This year marks the first in five in which the Harry Potter series does not top or appear on the ALA's annual list. The ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom received a total of 547 challenges (defined as formal, written complaints, filed with libraries or schools requesting that the material be removed because of content or appropriateness) last year, compared with 458 the year before. The number of challenges reflects only incidents reported, and for each report- ed, four or five remain unreported. 2003: Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's Alice series – about a fictional character coping with many of the problems young girls experience “growing up” in such books as “Achingly Alice,” “Alice in Lace,” and “Alice on the Outside” – topped the list of most challenged books of 2003, ending the four-year reign of J. The End of Obscenity was written, the author tells us, in "an at- tempt to offer an insight, to those who are not a part of it, into how our legal system works."' This slows the book considerably for the legal reader,2 but should not dissuade him. It offers insights of other sorts to lawyers and to law students, since it is one of those all-too-rare books in which a lawyer unfolds the history of an important piece of litigation. The book begins with the author's retention by Grove Press in 1959 to defend Lady Chatterley's Lover3 and ends in 1966 with his successful defense of Fanny Hill4 for Putnam before the Supreme Court.
