A Practice-based Approach to Vaporwave VYGINTAS ORLOVAS Vilnius Academy of Arts [email protected] The roots of the cultural object called vaporwave are often traced to the year 2009, however, the qualities that define it are still being discussed in both the discourse of popular culture as well as in an academic context. Ranging from being defined as a microgenre of electronic music, a meme, an art movement, a critique of capitalism to a being defined as a form of pure aesthetics it remains a multifaceted object for research. In this paper, I explore examples of vaporwave in order to distinguish the methods and strategies used for creating something that is called vaporwave, rather than in an attempt to label it as some particular thing. As a further step in this inquiry to vaporwave, I document an attempt to apply these methods and strategies that resulted in a published music album. A practice- based approach to analyzing vaporwave by creating and publishing it does help to understand some core qualities of it. This was especially prevalent amongst the collection of subgenres commonly referred to as 'extreme metal'. The differences between these subgenres are of deep importance to many fans and musicians for whom genre is an integral element of their musical identity and authenticity as ‘metalheads’ (Smialek, 2015). Despite this acknowledged importance, there is still a need to establish what Kahn-Harris calls ‘a widely accepted vocabulary for identifying the constituent musical features of metal’ (2011: 252). Metal studies broadly remains ‘undertheorized and undermethdologized’ (Weinstein, 2016: 29) with a need to clarify its academic rigour (Savigny and Schaap, 2018). It is these needs that this article seeks to address by analyzing the relevant literature discussing genre in metal and responding to the shortcomings identified. This article proposes both a taxonomy for classifying metal subgenres and a model that provides a series of interconnected characteristics to assist in defining these subgenres. By clearly outlining ways in which we might organize the different ‘levels’ of subgenres, this article aims to provide a common vocabulary for metal studies scholars to use when analyzing genres and their relationships.

Synthesizing pragmatic genre theory, constructivist film theory, Bourdieusian fan studies, and rhetorical genre studies, the dissertation aims to work through the radical implications of pragmatic genre theory and account for genres role in interpretation, evaluation, and rhetorical framing as part of broader, recurring social activities. This model rejects textualist and realist foundations for film genre; only pragmatic genre use can serve as a foundation for understanding film genres.     Granite: Aberdeen University Postgraduate Interdisciplinary Journal Proceedings of 1st Granite Symposium: Engaging the Intersections of Humanity and Technology The Rise and Fall of Vaporwave: Resistance and Sublimation in on-line Counter- Cultures Paul Fleetwood (School of Sociology) This essay examines issues of identity and resistance in the digital age via the short- lived micro-genre of Vaporwave. First, it is established that subculture and music play important roles in identity formation. Next, the rise and fall of Vaporwave is described. Finally, Vaporwave's demise suggests that internet-only subcultures cannot serve as sites for counter-cultural resistance. Virtual communities such as Facebook, Reddit, and Tumblr offer networked architectures, attracting settlers who may then establish 'communities of practice' in pursuit of shared goals and interests (Johnson, 2001). Individuals who participate in these communities benefit from the exchange physically, emotionally, and cognitively, and these interactions play a prominent role in identity formation (Preece, 2001). The young, especially, may use the internet as a medium for the development of identity, since 'virtual spaces [are] ripe for the development of youth identity and subculture' (Ebare, 2005). One such subculture arose from the virtual communities of Reddit and Tumblr. It was a community of practice oriented around a genre of music, one developed by its members, and included a distinct aesthetic, and - more impressively - an ideology. Music constitutes a locus for negotiations of meaning and identity among music fans: in the process of developing genre and subculture, young people are 'taking part in the negotiation of culture [and are] refining their self-concept or identity as they mature' (Ebare, 2005).

Its surrounding subculture is sometimes associated with an ambiguous or satirical take on consumer capitalism and popular culture, and tends to be characterized by a nostalgic or surrealist engagement with the popular entertainment, technology and advertising of previous decades. It also incorporates early Internet imagery, late 1990s web design, glitch art, anime, 3D-rendered objects, and cyberpunk tropes in its cover artwork and music videos. Originating as an ironic variant of chillwave, vaporwave was loosely derived from the experimental tendencies of the mid-2000s hypnagogic pop scene. The style was pioneered by producers such as James Ferraro, Daniel Lopatin, and Ramona Xavier under various pseudonyms. A circle of online producers were particularly inspired by Xavier’s Floral Shoppe (2011), which established a blueprint for the genre. The mvovement subsequently built an audience on sites Last.fm, Reddit, and 4chan while a flood of new acts, many operating under online pseudonyms, turned to Bandcamp for distribution.
