Binnenwerk 46/2 2003 Is it possible to use beaver building activity to reduce lake sedimentation? Dmitry Gorshkov Volga-Kama National Nature Preserve, Sadovy, P.O. Raifa, Zelenodolsk District, Tatarstan, 422537 Russia, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Erosion processes and lake sedimentation are among the major environmental problems in Tatarstan Republic. Ploughed soils from the agricultural lands are easily washed away from the fields during flooding, and carried through rivers and relief depressions to lakes and bogs, which then fill with the sediment. Raifa Lake is an example of such lake degradation. Due to erosion from agricultural lands upstream from the lake its length has de- creased from 6 to 1.3 km since 1650, its maximum depth has decreased from 36 to 19 m, and its area has decreased from 150 to 32 ha. The possibility of “harnessing” beavers (Castor fiber) to stop sedimentation by building dams is of great interest. We hoped that dams constructed by beavers would reduce the volume of solid particles that flow into Raifa Lake. With this objective in mind, we reintroduced 21 beavers between 1996 and 2000 on the Sumka River, which runs through Raifa Lake. Investigation was done during the annual flooding periods of 1999-2001 when 115 water samples were taken. The main factor that affects sedimentation is the volume of water that can be stopped by beaver ponds. During the flooding period of 2001, 4,250 tons of solid particles were stopped by three beaver dams in the settlement on Sumka River amounting to a cumulative area of 5.2 ha. Sediment mass per litre of water decreased by 53% (from 0.49 to 0.26 g/l) after water had passed the cascade of three dams. The study of modern geomorphological phenomena and processes on the territory of the Raifsky reserve was the main purpose of the work and geomorphological studies. Formation of the relief the territory under study is closely connected with the history of development of the valley of the Volga River. The territory of the reserve is very heterogeneous by morphology, genesis and history of the development of land forms. It is important to identify the interaction of the relief with the processes of territory development and settlement, i.e. geomorphological conditions are the pledge of successful development of the region. Keywords: geomorphologic research studies, relief, creep, erosion-accumulative processes, gully erosion, reserve. 1. Introduction Relief is the main element of the landscape. Many exogenous factors act influence the environment through the relief, which gives it special significance as the characteristic of the human living environment, as far as in the same climatic and structural-tectonic conditions the natural and antropogenous components of ecosystems develop differently, but in close cooperation with each another as well [1-7].

M.b Denmukhametov R.R.c a b c Kazan Federal University, Institute of Management, Economics and Finance, Kazan, 420008, Russia Doi:10.5901/mjss.2015.v6n1s3p237 Abstract The phenomenon of a slow displacement of unconsolidated soil that is widely known by the term "creep" (from English ɫreep - crawl) and "defluxion" (from German defluktion - drip, leak) covers almost all slopes of dry land. In order to identify the geomorphological role of this phenomenon stationary studies of creep and floodplain defluxion of small rivers in valleys of the Middle Volga are widely held. The relief of the investigated area (on the example of Raifa region of the Greater Volga-Kama Biosphere Reserve (GVKBR) "UNESCO") was created as a result of a long interaction between processes of internal and external dynamics. The territory of the reserve is very heterogeneous in morphology, genesis and history of a landform development. In the future, taking stationary study areas located on slopes and floodplains of small rivers as an example, it is very important to identify significant relationships and dependencies of the interaction between slopes defluxion and floodplain defluxion with modern geomorphic conditions. Keywords: relief, creep, floodplain defluxion, erosion-accumulative processes, incline, floodplain, slope. 1. Introduction Stationary studies conducted by the staff members of the Department of Geography and Cartography of the Kazan University that have been held for over 30 years (since 1983) and include studies of the intensity of modern erosion- accumulative processes in small river basins in the east of the Russian Plain, have identified a new phenomenon at the bottoms of river valleys – the floodplain defluxion (slow ground movement of floodplains down the stream).

This study is devoted to the fate of the German language island dialects in foreign language environment. The authors has explored the nature of the changes, the degree of dialectal features loss, indicate the possibility of developing new features. The sub dialects as elements of the language system were found to continue existing even outside the native language range. The peculiarities of language systems existence in extreme conflict conditions like those of the German dialects on the Volga region territory are of particular research interest, as they are influenced not only by the native language system, but also by another foreign language and culture. Language relations are determined not simply by coexistence of the two language systems, the German and Russian ones, and bilingualism of the majority of the German ethnic group representatives, but by the complex specificity of language processes in the past and even more complicated, specific current language situation, which determined the relevance of the article theme. n. 1 Introduction the problem of bilingualism in conditions of national and cultural isolation, characterized by multidirectional Those languages which function away from the tendencies of their development. Zakirov 1 1 Kazan Federal University, 18 Kremlyovskaya street, Kazan 420008, RUSSIA *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract The natural monument “Gray heron colony” is a specially protected area of about 100 ha with the largest colony of gray herons registered in Tatarstan Republic (Russia). The territory of the natural monument is closed to visitors. Here, we have studied the flora of the higher vascular plants of the area adjacent to the “Gray heron colony”, which is characterized by similar landscape and environmental conditions. Two main methods to identify plant species were used: fixed sites and a route method, for which a route network covering all the main biotopes of the studied area was laid. The structure of the flora was studied by analyzing systematic, geographic, biomorphological, and biocenotic compositions. The identified spectrum of the leading families (Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Rosaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Poaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Apiaceae, Ranunculaceae, Lamiaceae, and Cyperaceae), was typical for the Holarctic floristic kingdom. The spectrum of life forms found (according to Raunkiær and Serebryakov) was generally characteristic to the temperate zone: more than half of the species (57.5%) were represented by hemicryptophytes (according to Raunkiær); 67% of the species were perennials (according to Serebryakov). By biotopic localization, most species were forest and forest edge plants (31.4%). The geographical analysis has shown that most species of flora have a Euro-Asian type of distribution. Among identified species, two are listed in the Red Book of Tatarstan - Daphne mezereum L.

Kazan (Volga region) Federal University, Kazan, Russia The role of key factors determining the functioning of tree stands can be identified by studying the annual radial increments of trees, which enables reconstruction of environmental conditions with a high temporal resolution (Shiyatov et al., 2000). Climate and hydrological conditions can be reconstructed using tree-ring chronologies built form a relatively large number of trees belonging to a single or several species and growing within the same habitat or in several habitat types (Shiyatov et al., 2000). This methodology could be used to reconstruct the water level history of lakes, as in these published studies: Lake Baikal in Russia (Galazii, 1972), Lake Bienville in Canada (Begin, 2001), Great Salt Lake in the USA (Gillies et al., 2015), etc. The purpose of current research was to study the annual radial increment of pine trees growing around Raifa Lake in order to reconstruct its hydrological regime. Raifa Lake is the main water body of the Volga-Kama State Nature Biosphere Reserve (Republic of Tatarstan, Russia). The lake contains more than 82% of all waters of the surface water bodies in Raifa. The main source of the lake water supply is snow melt water, whereas rain, ground, and swamp sources bring smaller amount of water (Taisin, 2006).
