  • Media Nations 2019
Media nations: UK 2019 Published 7 August 2019 Overview This is Ofcom’s second annual Media Nations report. It reviews key trends in the television and online video sectors as well as the radio and other audio sectors. Accompanying this narrative report is an interactive report which includes an extensive range of data. There are also separate reports for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Media Nations report is a reference publication for industry, policy makers, academics and consumers. This year’s publication is particularly important as it provides evidence to inform discussions around the future of public service broadcasting, supporting the nationwide forum which Ofcom launched in July 2019: Small Screen: Big Debate. We publish this report to support our regulatory goal to research markets and to remain at the forefront of technological understanding. It addresses the requirement to undertake and make public our consumer research (as set out in Sections 14 and 15 of the Communications Act 2003). It also meets the requirements on Ofcom under Section 358 of the Communications Act 2003 to publish an annual factual and statistical report on the TV and radio sector. This year we have structured the findings into four chapters. • The total video chapter looks at trends across all types of video including traditional broadcast TV, video-on-demand services and online video. • In the second chapter, we take a deeper look at public service broadcasting and some wider aspects of broadcast TV. • The third chapter is about online video. This is where we examine in greater depth subscription video on demand and YouTube.

  • Prorogation: How Can the Government Suspend Parliament?
Little Mix's Jesy Nelson: Online trolls made me want to die In a new BBC Three documentary, the singer reveals how online bullying affected her mental health In a new BBC Three documentary, Jesy Nelson: 'Odd One Out', the singer, 28, says that comments about her appearance made her so unhappy she “just wanted to die”. In a candid and tearful moment, Jesy recalls how she took an overdose after taunts about her looks became too much to bear. Jesy and her bandmates won the reality show in 2011, instantly taking them from complete unknowns to celebrities. In the documentary, the singer also explores how the trolling affected her mum, her sister, her bandmates and her relationships – and meets ordinary people who tell Jesy their stories of being bullied online. How much of an issue is trolling? The bullying began almost immediately after Jesy appeared on TV in the X Factor. She was put into the girl group alongside Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock. When Little Mix were announced as that year’s winners, Jesy says they were all “on cloud nine”. But just hours after winning the show, her excitement was tainted by trolling. “I had about 101 Facebook messages in my inbox, and the first one that came up was from some random man, saying: ‘You are the ugliest thing I’ve seen in my life, you do not deserve to be in this girl band. You deserve to die’.” It was a devastating blow to Jesy who, up until the barrage of insults and hate started during her time on X Factor, hadn’t had any problems with her body image.

LITTLE MIX SIGN WITH USA PRO Submitted by: Keith Bishop PR Ltd Tuesday, 22 December 2015 CHART TOPPERS TO FRONT FEMALE FITNESS BRAND (Transcript of the interview with Little Mix and images available on request) Little Mix are the new global ambassadors for USA Pro – the fashionable sportswear brand, designed by women for women. The former X Factor winners will star in a new TV advert, due to air in January, and work with USA Pro on their very own collaboration, which is due to release in Summer 2016. The band, made up of Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jesy Nelson, will each work on collections that reflect their individual personalities and approaches to fashion and fitness. Commenting on the partnership, Jade said: “We’re so excited! The USA Pro range is ideal for our active lifestyles, as well as those of our fans. It’s not just about gym gear; we wear USA Pro during rehearsals, on photo shoots, when we’re out and about or even just on the sofa!” Leigh-Anne added: “We can’t wait to be involved in the design process. We’ve got so many ideas! Each one of us has our own individual style, body shape, and approach to fitness so we’ll be incorporating all those ideas into our own range.” The global deal represents Little Mix’s first move into the fitness world and it was USA Pro’s combination of fashion and functionality that appealed to the girls. Perrie said: “I love keeping fit by dancing and taking classes but, like a lot of girls, I actually hate the gym! Everyone’s individual in the way they exercise but we all want to look good whatever we’re doing.

No part of it has been submitted for any degree, or is currently being submitted for any other degree. To the best of my knowledge, any help received in preparing this thesis, and all sources used, have been duly acknowledged. 4 5 for Caroline, Alida, and Isobel 6 7 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe a great debt to my supervisory panel members past and present: Kim Sterelny, Justin Bruner, Rachael Brown, and Ben Fraser, for their deeply insightful commentary and gentle corrective during the various phases of this project. In particular, Kim very much provided both the inspiration for this project and the impetus for venturing to return to philosophy for this PhD candidature. I would not have entered into this without his encouragement, and I certainly would not have made it out the other side without his support and mentorship. Thank you, Kim, for your judgment and generosity, and for your astute, necessity-sensitive application of patience (or lack thereof) when required. Justin too deserves special mention for patiently schooling me in evolutionary game theory and signalling games (despite my sometimes bizarrely misguided intuitions), and in suggesting and contributing to my first simulation projects and our joint paper at the 2016 PSA, published in Philosophy of Science. Being at the School of Philosophy at the ANU, the number of faculty and grad students (local and visiting) who have taken the time to listen and offer valuable insights would be too long to record here.
