November 2020 On the origins of Þórðar saga kakala 3 Abstract This thesis focuses on the origins of Þórðar saga kakala. Chapter 1 reviews scholarship on the lost original version of Þórðar saga kakala (*Þórðar saga kakala hin mikla). By testing previous arguments and suppositions, it concludes that: *Þórðar saga kakala hin mikla was a “biography” of the adult life (c. 1233-56) of Þórður kakali Sighvatsson (c. 1210-56); it was written during the 1270s in the Western Quarter of Iceland; and Svarthöfði Dufgusson (c. 1218-c. 86) may have been its author. It also identifies a gap in previous research of Þórðar saga kakala’s earliest history: there has been no satisfactory attempt to establish its contemporary significance. The thesis attempts to remedy this over the following two chapters. In chapter 2, a literary- analytic approach is applied to *Þórðar saga kakala hin mikla. This literary analysis takes into account the formal elements of the extant text and reconstructed lost original, as well as what we know about the worldview of the audience. Chapter 2 constitutes the point of departure for chapter 3: an historical analysis of *Þórðar saga kakala hin mikla. After theorising about the telos of the biographical contemporary saga subgenre in general, *Þórðar saga kakala hin mikla is turned to in particular by considering the product of the literary analysis in chapter 2 within a 1270s political context. The conclusion drawn is that the saga can sensibly be considered as a work of propaganda to support Hrafn Oddsson in his power struggle with Þorvarður Þórarinsson 4 Daniel Martin White during the period 1273-9. Chapter 3 then evaluates the ways in which Þórðar saga kakala concords with what we know and can infer about Hrafn’s political stances to appraise and bolster this interpretation of the text. On the origins of Þórðar saga kakala 5 Impact statement In general terms, this thesis is the first ever systematic and lengthy study of Þórðar saga kakala. Scholars, students, and others interested in this saga will find it useful. The specific utility of the thesis is its comprehensive perspective on Þórðar saga kakala’s origins. This is of particular worth to historians seeking to evaluate and cite the text as a primary source. It also provides a basis for future debate on the literary dimension of the ostensibly historical Þórðar saga kakala. This is important as the contemporary sagas have only recently begun to be approached from an aesthetic, rather than merely historiographic, perspective. Beyond the topic-centric products underscored above, the thesis makes further, and broader, significant and original contributions to research. Methodologically, the thesis deploys and demonstrates the efficacy of several novel approaches, such as stylometry. Still further, the thesis pragmatically combines tried and tested methods in revivifying and transdisciplinarily integrative ways. For instance, the synthesis of formalist and new historicist approaches in chapter 2 – based on a pragmatic dismissal of the theoretical conflict of the two – accords with and complements the understanding of human cognition presented by scientific disciplines. 6 Daniel Martin White At a disciplinary level, this thesis works to rehabilitate the aims of traditional Philology, whilst remaining mindful of the limitations of the stemmatic method in textual criticism, as well as the methodological and theoretical contributions of New Philology to the study of Old Icelandic texts. This kind of “metaxic” Philology is of significance going forward due to its concordance with an ongoing turn in Literary Studies: scholars of pre-Modern literature are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of integrating lost texts into literary history. The thesis’ research and analysis will be circulated via a number of peer-reviewed articles. Additionally, alongside the author’s recent publication of an edition and translation of Þórðar saga kakala, the thesis is another step towards the aim of producing the first academically rigorous biography of Þórður kakali Sighvatsson. Haki Antonsson, my primary supervisor, sparked my interest in Þórður kakali Sighvatsson’s life and saga when he casually mentioned Þórður’s gestasveit during our first supervision back in the Autumn term of 2017. Haki’s guidance and support in our subsequent supervisions was critical to the successful completion of the doctorate. Erin Goeres, my subsidiary supervisor, allowed me to audit her Advanced Old Norse class in the first year of my PhD. The opportunity to study Old Norse alongside the 2017 class of undergraduates in Scandinavian Studies was highly educational; I do not believe I have met undergraduates studying elsewhere in Great Britain who have a better grounding in the diachronics of the North Germanic languages. Abstract This study explores how education and the medieval intellectual and pedagogical discipline of grammatica developed in Iceland during the medieval period, defined roughly from the official conversion to Christianity c.1000 to the Reformation c.1550. The first chapter deals with social, institutional, and financial aspects of teaching and learning in medieval Iceland, surveying key figures and places, but also arguing that more attention should be paid to the costs of learning and the effect of that on poor students. The second chapter addresses Latin education, discussing the importance of Latinity in medieval Iceland and the types of education that would involve Latin. It also addresses the idea of bilingual education and suggests ways in which extant vernacular writings can provide evidence for how Latin was taught and learned using the vernacular, using the model of Old English bilingual education.

    Snorri Sturluson: his life and work Snorri Sturluson is the first major writer of Old Icelandic prose from whom we have a large body of extant writing, including some poetry, and whose life is, in outline, well documented. Unlike most earlier writers of prose, he was not a cleric, but an aristocratic layman, and nearly all he wrote is on secular topics. The main sources for his life besides annals are the nearly contemporary Íslendinga saga and the saga of Hákon Hákonarson (king of Norway 1217–1263), both by Snorri’s nephew Sturla Þórðarson; and the sagas of Guðmundr Arason (bishop at Hólar in northern Iceland 1203– 1237). Snorri was born in western Iceland in 1178 or 1179, son of the powerful chieftain Hvamms-Sturla whose family gave their name to the turbulent period of Icelandic history leading up to the loss of political independence in 1262–1264, the Age of the Sturlungs, which was also the great age of Icelandic saga-writing. When he was three (his father died in 1183) Snorri was sent to be fostered (i.e. educated) at Oddi in southern Iceland, with the chieftain Jón Loptsson (died 1197), grandson of the historian (writing in Latin) and priest Sæmundr fróði (the Learned). Jón himself was a deacon, but was prominent in the resistance of secular leaders to the extension of Church power in the later twelfth century. Many have thought that there must have been some sort of school at Oddi, but at that period in Iceland as elsewhere in Europe, most formal education took place in monasteries and cathedrals, and was based on training in Latin and preparation of pupils for ordination as priests.

In modern Icelandic archaeology, however, the Icelandic literary record, apart from official documents such as censuses, has not been considered a viable source for interpretation since the early 20th century. Although the Icelandic corpus is problematic in several ways, it is a source that should be used in Icelandic archaeological interpretation, if used properly with source criticism. MA Thesis in Viking and Medieval Norse Studies Adam Bierstedt Kt.: 310896-3229 Advisor: Emily Lethbridge May 2019 2 Abstract The middle of the thirteenth century was a period of dramatic change in medieval Icelandic history. Politically, the Icelandic Commonwealth ended between 1262 and 1264 CE, as the leading men in Iceland swore allegiance to King Hákon IV of Norway and his surrogate, Gizurr Þorvaldsson. Ecologically, the Medieval Climate Anomaly gave way to the tumultuous weather of the fourteenth century and the so-called Little Ice Age. This border was punctuated by a massive volcanic eruption on the other side of the world. This eruption, which took place in 1257 at the Samalas caldera in Indonesia, caused a cooling effect across Europe until 1261, as the sulfur emissions from the volcano encircled the globe. This thesis explores the interaction between these two moments of crisis within Sturla Þórðarson’s Íslendinga saga. The saga, by and large, does not describe any weather events in the years after the Samalas eruption, up to and including an eruption of Katla in 1262. I treat the saga as a literary text, and analyze weather events in the saga along the same lines as previous scholarship has analyzed weather events in the Íslendingasögur. By so doing, I establish a framework for how weather is used for narrative purposes throughout Íslendinga saga. Then, I analyze the other Icelandic documentary material that discusses the five years after the eruption, particularly the Icelandic annals, and reveal the exclusion from Íslendinga saga of many weather events found in the annals.

    MARLENE CIKLAMINI THE HAND OF REVISION: ABBOT ARNGRÍMR'S REDACTION OF GUÐMUNDAR SAGA BISKUPS1 BY THE fourteenth century, Icelanders felt comfortable with imported literary works that stylistically and thematically ran counter to the sparse, dramatic prose of native tradition. Concomitantly, the leisure- ly, often anticlimactic, tone and exuberant phrasing prevalent in learned works of foreign origin came to influence indigenous saga writing. The manneristic, or florid, style of such sagas2 influenced Ab- bot Arngrímr Brandsson (d. L361),3 as he reworked the vita of Bishop Guðmundr (1161-1237) according to a new literary canon and interpre- tive mode. He thus ranks among those hagiographers intent on mod- Guðmundar saga Arasonar eftir Arngrím ábóta Brandsson, in Byskupa sögur, Hólabyskupar ed. Guðni Jónsson (íslendingasagnaútgáfan, 1953), III, 147^75. The date of composition is between 1343 and Arngrímr's death in 1361.
