Tokugawa Yoshimune versus Tokugawa Muneharu: Rival Visions of Benevolent Rule by Tim Ervin Cooper III A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Mary Elizabeth Berry, Chair Professor Irwin Scheiner Professor Susan Matisoff Fall 2010 Abstract Tokugawa Yoshimune versus Tokugawa Muneharu: Rival Visions of Benevolent Rule by Tim Ervin Cooper III Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Mary Elizabeth Berry, Chair This dissertation examines the political rivalry between the eighth Tokugawa shogun, Yoshimune (1684‐1751, r. 1716‐45), and his cousin, the daimyo lord of Owari domain, Tokugawa Muneharu (1696‐1764, r. 1730‐39). For nearly a decade, Muneharu ruled Owari domain in a manner that directly contravened the policies and edicts of his cousin, the shogun. Muneharu ignored admonishments of his behavior, and he openly criticized the shogun’s Kyōhō era (1716‐36) reforms for the hardship that they brought people throughout Japan. Muneharu’s flamboyance and visibility transgressed traditional status boundaries between rulers and their subjects, and his lenient economic and social policies allowed commoners to enjoy the pleasures and profits of Nagoya entertainment districts that were expanding in response to the Owari lord’s personal fondness for the floating world. Ultimately, Muneharu’s fiscal extravagance and moral lenience—benevolent rule (jinsei), as he defined it—bankrupted domain coffers and led to his removal from office by Yoshimune. Although Muneharu’s challenge to Yoshimune’s political authority ended in failure, it nevertheless reveals the important role that competing notions of benevolence (jin) were coming to play in the rhetoric of Tokugawa rulership.

NEWS RELEASE February 28, 2020 Announcing the Latest Cherry Blossom Forecast! The cherry blossom season will begin on March 16 in Tokyo and Fukuoka At Ueno Park, we can expect to enjoy cherry blossoms in full bloom around March 24 Weathernews Inc. has announced their forecast for the upcoming cherry blossom season. This year, the Yoshino cherry trees are expected to blossom earlier or slightly earlier than usual across a wide area of western and eastern Japan (based on the averages for the past 5 years from 2015 to 2019), and in some places blossoms are expected to appear at the earliest dates on record. However, blossoming is forecast to begin slightly later than usual in the southern part of Kyushu, where the break of dormancy has been delayed due to a warm winter. Blossoming will begin on March 16th in Tokyo and Fukuoka, followed by Yokohama, Matsuyama, and Kochi on the 17th. If cherry trees blossom in Tokyo on March 16, it will match the earliest blossoming date since record keeping began. By the end of March, cherry trees will be blossoming in most areas of western and eastern Japan, and will have begun to blossom in southern Tohoku. The cherry blossom front will reach Hokkaido in late April, with Kushiro expected to be the last place to see blossoms, early in May. Currently, buds are growing at the same rate as, or slightly faster than, last year, when blossoms appeared in line with yearly averages. With temperatures in March and April expected to be higher than normal, and the same as or higher than last year, buds are growing quickly and blossoms are expected to appear up to a week earlier than last year in some places.

  • Early Modern
ARCHAEOLOGIA JAPONICA Early Modern AKAMATSU Waka 2011 saw many disasters such as the earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku and Typhoon No. 12. Once again we felt the menace of nature, and so many precious lives were lost and cultural properties were damaged. Acts to support damaged cultural properties began right after the earthquake. In such a harsh environment, study of modern archaeology in fiscal 2011 yielded many results. For castle study in East Japan, earthquake-related projects were outstanding. Urgent measures for damage repair were reported on 12 castles in Tohoku region, at the 6th conference of Kita Nihon Kinsei Jokaku Kentokai, “Higashi Nihon Daishinsai ni Yoru Jokaku no Hisai (Damage to Castles from the East Japan Earthquake).” Excavation research was conducted mainly to confirm and reorganize damage, and this trend is expected to continue in the next fiscal year. In West Japan, castle study was often tied up with preservation and maintenance projects. Site tours were conducted for the remains of Toyama Castle, Wakayama Castle, and Okayama Castle. Excavation reports were published for Kumamotojo site, Matsue-jokamachi site, and so on. As for castle town study, research results were outstanding for the castle towns of Edo and Osaka. Features to solve problems of garbage disposal in Edo were discovered at Yotsuya-yonchome site, and features to verify garbage disposal at Yotsuya-yonchome site were yielded from the 11th excavation of Saieicho site in Shinjuku Ward. For Osaka castle town, many excavations were done for kurayashiki (mansions with warehouses). A certain amount of Nabeshima ware potteries were excavated from the remains of a kurayashiki owned by the Saga feudal clan.
