SHE CANADA 5 Editor’snote

y the time you read this 2015 is in full swing. As I write this we’ve just rung in theB New Year. The year 2015 marks an exciting time for SHE Canada. Not only is our content better than ever, but we’ve made some great additions to our team this issue. On that note, here’s what you can expect:

This month we’re particularly thrilled about our cover star, Lilly Singh. Known the world over as IISuperwomanII, the Markhamite exclusively spoke with Priya Kumar to discuss her unique form of fame. What’s more, her interview took place four days after she dropped her collaboration with Seth Rogan and James Franco. It’s notable for two reasons. One, the duo are Hollywood heavyweights. Secondly, this sketch took place mere days before the two stars were caught up in The Interview scandal with North Korea. The hacks on Sony were unprecedented leading up with the release of their film. Learn more about the YouTube EDITOR sensation on page 30. S.M. Kamran Zaidi Valentine’s Day is also just around the corner. What are you getting for your significant other? Go straight to page 26 for some awesome gifting ideas. Speaking of significant other, By The Numbers (p. 54) breaks down what it is to be in a relationship in 2015. Marriages, divorces, break-ups, male/female ratios in Toronto are all covered in this no holds barred feature.

Finally, for all you foodies out there, SHE got a hold of the notoriously private Michelin- Starred chef Sriram Aylur. Executive Chef at London’s Quilon, the master of South Asian Costal Cuisine candidly opens up about running a world-class eatery.

Happy Valentine’s Day! We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we did putting it together.

6 SHE CANADA Valentine’s Day. Need we say more? Besides the winter holidays, there is no time of the year more stressful when it comes to gift-giving. Don’t worry. SHE’s got your back. 30 SHE CANADA Photographs Courtesy of Rick Matharu SHE CANADA 31 Trolls are unavoidable on the internet today. How do you deal with negativity that shows up in the comments section?

If you do anything in the public eye you need to have super, super thick skin because it doesn’t matter what you do, there will be people hating on you. Aside from having thick skin, it’s just that I really love what I do and I feel like anyone who does anything in the public eye you have to really truly love what you do because that’s the only way you can deal with the negativity that people give you.

If you don’t believe in what you’re doing and you read hate comments, it really, really sucks because you don’t even have that passion to keep you going. But when you really love what you do and you read a hate comment, it doesn’t both- er you as much because you know all the love that’s out there, you believe in what you’re doing and you’re passionate about it. My rule of thumb is—because sometimes of course, even me, even though now it’s really hard for a hate comment to bother me, there will be some that I read from time to time and I’m like, “Oh my god, this is so annoying, I’m totally going to reply to this person”—so my rule of thumb is, before you do that, reply to a positive comment before you re- ply to a negative one and that usually changes my mind, that I don’t want to reply to the nega- tive one anymore.

Tell me a bit about Unicorn Island.

Unicorn Island is the name of my clothing line. But more importantly, it is a place I created that anyone can go to. The real meaning of Uni- corn Island if we want to get real deep is that state of happiness, that place of happiness I’ve learned how to get to after depression. If you’re depressed, and you get to that state where you’re better and you’re happy and learn how to love life and love yourself, that is Unicorn Island. On a more light-hearted note, it’s that place where after a long day, you can just relax, be positive. Think Miley Cyrus/Katy Perry’s brain—candy, glitter, unicorns, colour everywhere. A place where there’s no negativity and people can just love everyone else. That’s what Unicorn Island is and that’s where I like to take my viewers when they watch my videos. That place that’s just full of positivity and happiness.

32 SHE CANADA On CBC’s Q back in July you mentioned Bollywood’s big- gest star brought you home with him to meet his family (his daughter’s a fan). We can make our assumptions about which star it was but please share the whole story!

Yes, so life changing moment. Shah Rukh Khan invited me to his house in Mumbai to meet his daughter who’s a huge fan and it was just such a surreal experience. It was the strangest thing be- cause I walked into his house and his daughter and all her friends started screaming and I was so confused as to what was happening and they were screaming over me and I was like, “Do you know who your dad is?” It was strange and he was also telling me how he watches my videos and he was just one of the nicest people I’ve met in my entire life. I think that was probably one of the most validating experiences because it’s also not someone I grew up watching, my par- ents were familiar with him and also understand the status that he has so for him to invite me to his house and say he’s a fan of mine. I think that was really validating for me and also for my par- ents to be like, “Okay we’re not going to bug you about this anymore, do your thing, do your vid- eos.” That was really cool. SHE CANADA 33 How does being South Asian shape the image you project as a YouTube Star?

In a lot of my skits I act as my parents who are very much so Indian. But I would say now what I currently do, it doesn’t so much shape what I do because I feel like my content is so universal, people from all cultures can relate to it. I will say that inevitably being South Asian puts me in certain categories whether I like it or not peo- ple will refer to me as “that Indian girl on You- Tube” or “she’s one of those Indian YouTubers” and I’m like no I’m not, I’m just a YouTuber, I’m an entertainer, I don’t need to be categorized. I just talk about the culture I grew up in but only because I know everyone else can relate to it. I don’t want to be one of those people that goes out of my way just to cater to South Asian peo- ple. I want to cater to everyone.

The music video #Leh proved to be a massive success for you. What does #Leh mean and what was it about the video that struck a chord with viewers around the world?

#Leh was a success that really took me off guard because it was the first I ever seriously tried to do music and a music video. Although it’s still playful and silly it was what I’d like to consider a serious song because it’s not a parody. And in fact, it just made Google’s top ten viral videos of the year so that was really cool.

I think why #Leh was so popular, me and Hum- ble [The Poet] always talk about this, is I think everyone always has #Leh-worthy moments so the song is about everyone and everyone also knows someone else that the song applies to.

It’s making fun of all the things that people have made ‘cool’ these days. You know rappers in their music videos, it’s full of cars and money and hot people and that’s just the norm so we basically took that and we were like “this is ri- diculous”, we should make fun of this. I think that’s why it’s so popular because people could just relate to it and agree.

34 SHE CANADA I live in the UK (South Asian/Ca- nadian by origin). Friends of mine here from all over the world—Af- ghanistan, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe—are fans of your videos. Why do you think the topics you touch on resonate so well univer- sally?

I think it’s kind of similar to what I mentioned before. I talk about things that probably happen to every single person. A big part of my come- dy is my parents, me fighting with my parents, family parties, or whatever it is and everyone can relate to that and if you live in Afghanistan, or the Caribbean, or Eastern Europe you proba- bly deal with your parents the same way. I have videos called “Types of Annoying People at the Movies” because you can relate to that no matter where you live.

I’m like, “Hey, this is me, I’m a person, I have flaws and these are the annoying things that happen to me.” I have people like, “Oh my god, me too!” Or maybe they’re all just laughing at me or they like my hair. I’m not really sure.

SHE CANADA 71 DUBLIN By Ameena Iqbal & 1200 YEARS OF IRISH Aly Zorn HISTORY IN ONE DAY

It was so quiet that the sound of the metal door being unlocked echoed through the room like an unexpected rumble of thunder. The rusted hinges creaked like a slow, frightened squeal cut short by overwhelming fear. Our feet shuffled softly against the bare floor as we slowly made our way through the narrow halls.

We were following our tour guide through the deserted rooms of Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin’s in- famous 18th century prison. Her voice echoed against the cold stone walls as she told us haunting stories of those who had been imprisoned and executed here. Leaders of the rebellions of 1798, 1803, 1848, 1867 and 1916 were all detained at Kilmainham Gaol. Outside in the courtyard, a cross marked the spot where several of them were executed. Throughout the tour everyone was silent, and I couldn’t tell whether the chill running down my spine was because of the temperature or the atmosphere. The stillness in the building, the stark rooms and empty prison cells made it seem like no one ever inhabited this place, but the names carved by prisoners into door frames were a sudden reminder that many spent years of their life here in cold, dark solitude.

A tour of the Kilmainham Gaol is a riveting glimpse into the profound history of Dublin, a city that’s steeped in history. The story revolves around the chef’s quest for the perfect ingredients, techniques and evolution of old traditions to suit modern tastes. With an ethos that blends ethnic with progres- sive, Quilon has become a destination for foodies in the well-heeled neighbourhood of Victoria in London, England. During the Christmas season I had the opportunity to catch up with Quilon’s Head Chef Sriram Aylur. Inspired by his father’s work at his restaurant in India, Aylur gave up a would-be career in law to pursue his true passion of culinary artistry. “I remember being fascinated by the smell and aro- mas which used to come from the kitchen—it was my first love.” His father quickly gave him more responsibility in the family business despite still being in school: “It gave me the overall perspective of the restaurant. It was the best training I ever received.” Aylur joined the luxury hotel group Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces in 1989. Having been the head chef at Gateway Hotel in Bangalore, he says, “It was here that I strengthened my thoughts and shaped my desire to unfold the potential of southern Indian cuisine.” Have I mentioned Quilon was awarded a Michelin star in 2008, maintaining it to this day? Notoriously tight-lipped about his accolades, my conversation with Chef Sriram Aylur unfolded as follows: 80U SHE CANADA The journey your spices take from India to the purpose is lost. The event was anchored by seven spotlight pres- entations given by leading entrepreneurs and professionals. Among them were Mahana Syed of GLOW Academy, Geisha Chin of GR Fitness, and Simone Atungo, the Director of the Toronto Housing Corporation, each taking the oppor- tunity to highlight not only their successes, but their struggles as well. With every presentation heads were nodding in approval, and eyes were lighting up with inspiration as the speaker’s sto- ries resonated with the crowd. An underlying theme amongst the talks was the fact that every- one faced obstacles, even the most successful BEAUTY women, but they did not let them hinder their focus or their drive.
