Page 3 Dear Friends of the Community Center In the life of every organization, change is inevitable Sometimes it is planned, and other times it comes from out of the blue. A good, solid organization faces that change with calm and determination and thoughtfully moves past any bump in the road. In May, Ted Martin was presented with the opportunity to join Equality PA as the new executive director of the state's LGBT political advocacy organization. For the Center, this was exciting news in all respects. Ted has served as Board President though a critical time for the organization and to have him move to this state-wide lead- ership role is a feather in the Center's cap. However, though he will remain an active Board member, because of his new responsibilities, Ted needs to step aside from the day to day responsibility as President. This past Tuesday at our June Board meeting, Bebe Mul- laugh was unanimously elected to serve out Ted's remain- ing term as President for 2010. Regular annual elections will be held in December to elect the slate of officers for 2011. This is a new chapter in our history and one that portends very well for our future. Many organizations tear them- selves apart over such successions, but we chose the least disruptive course to allow us to continue offering quality programs and services to the eight counties that we represent and remain a partner with the larger commu- nity in supporting the strength and diversity of Central Pennsylvania's LGBT citizens. Of course, this doesn't shield us from a volatile economy or the constant need to provide interesting and unique programs to all of you, but we and the Board feel confi- dent that the Center is strong enough to change and pros- per in these challenging times. In the months ahead, the Center's Board and Staff will Saturday, October 16th in Hershey, PA continue to expand the capacity of the Center to pursue its mission to create common ground for the LGBT commu- nity and allies in Central Pennsylvania by providing ser- Friday, July 16th vices through spiritual, educational and cultural activities @ 7 pm that foster wholeness.

  • Why Conservatives Should Take Part in Pride
Why should Conservatives take part in Pride? At the 2015 election LGBT+ voters began to shift their traditional left-wing allegiances and started to vote Conservative in large numbers. A poll before the General Election saw support for the Conservatives among LGBT+ voters draw level with Labour for the first time. Gay marriage, although controversial at the time, had a large role to play in this shift. All Conservatives should be campaigning on this record of equality, whether they supported gay marriage or not. Theresa May has long been a champion of gay marriage and there is now an opportunity unlike any before to persuade the LGBT+ community to vote Conservative. WHAT IS PRIDE? Pride is a parade or festival where the LGBT+ community and their allies come together to promote equal rights as well as self- affirmation. The celebration originated in New York City to mark the “Stonewall Riot”, a demonstration following a police raid on a gay bar. In countries where LGBT+ rights are less advanced than the UK, Pride parades remain political, but in this country, Pride is usually an excuse for a party, bringing together a large cross-section of society, both gay and straight. The nearly 70 Prides which take place across the UK each year are increasingly more akin to outdoor family-friendly summer festivals. HOW TO GET INVOLVED? Getting involved in your local Pride is easy. Except for the larger Prides such as London, Manchester and Brighton, most parades don’t charge to allow groups to march although registration is often required. Prides which have festivals may charge to have a stall or stand, but such presence at a Pride offers an excellent occasion to meet with local residents both gay and straight.

Our 2018 festival promises to be the biggest edition yet, featuring an ex- panded street festival, more community events, and two days of mainstage programming and entertainment. From August 19 to 26, the LGBTQ2+ community and our allies will celebrate one another, taking the opportunity to connect with people and organizations across the region that contribute to our vibrant queer community. This year, we are recognizing the power of community. Our theme is paying tribute to the many people and groups that come together locally, nationally, and globally to advocate for LGBTQ2+ rights, and recognizing that progress is made through people uniting to create strong communities that push for change. So, this week, I invite you to join us in celebrating our theme, CommUNITY. Organizing a festival of this size wouldn’t be possible without a team of dedicated festival volunteers, staff, oper- ations team members, youth committee members, and board members who are hard at work all week and all year long. Thank you for all for all that you do. Thank you also to our many public, private and community partners who support the festival and enable us to grow each year. Finally, I encourage you to get involved in Capital Pride.

It is not a secret that maintaining a cross-border non-profit organisation with limited financial means is a daunting task. Add to the mix some new faces and new ideas and fireworks are guaranteed. Who would have thought that in just 12 short months the whole world would have changed in the way it has? From political instability, to the rise of the right and increases in intolerance and hate crimes, it seems that every month we have been battered with more bad news, challenging situations, and the deaths of so many. We galvanised ourselves in our droves to knock on doors and leaflet drop ahead of the snap general election, we campaigned for Labour candidates all over Britain and were rewarded with new Labour MPs.
