Annual Report 2013/14 EPOA · ANNUAL REPORT 2013/14

Welcome to EPOA!

EPOA, the European Organisers Association, had a difficult working year. It is not a secret that maintaining a cross-border non-profit organisation with limited financial means is a daunting task. Add to the mix some new faces and new ideas and fireworks are guaranteed. Unfortunately some of the board members have left us half way through the working year for all sorts of different reasons.

But looking back at some of the challenges we came across, it has to be said that the board and its vision has come out even stronger. So with the remaining board members we obviously ensured the proper functioning of the organisation but foremost lined ourselves up towards a better organisa- tion for the future. EuroPride 2014

In the period of 20th-29th of June Oslo Pride was the host of EuroPride. This became the biggest LGBTIQ-event in Oslo and Norway ever. To set a European theme on the festival, Amnesty International was invited to join to set focus on in- ternational human rights, represented by the slogan “Love moves”. Love can both be positive and controversial. The resent events like the anti-gay propaganda laws in made this topic very relevant, and activists from over 10 countries were present. Pride House The political support from the national Government and the Pride House, the main arena for politics and debate, took City of Oslo was strong, and both the Prime Minister and the place from the 20th to the 27th of June and included 73 City Mayor invited to receptions, and several politicians took events, all free of charge. an active part in the festival to support the message. The main focus was on international human rights and the treat- ment of people identifying as trans* or with a trans* history. They also covered topics related to young and old, people of different or identity, racism within the LHBTIQ environment and . From June 23rd, Pride House shifted location to the Muse- um of Cultural History. For the first time the museum hosted an art exhibition centered around the political efforts, street demonstrations, parties and gatherings that were carried out by the gay communities and other supporters of gay rights since 1972. Pride House had more than 2000 visits during the festival.

Volunteers The need of volunteers was higher than normal and 300 vol- unteers was recruited. Oslo Pride invested in a festival man- agement system to handle the amount. The volunteers were closely followed up in the time before the festival. Two times they were called up personally by representatives of the fes- tival. In addition to the Norwegian volunteers there where volun- teers from several countries, like USA and Mexico. The vol- unteers mainly worked at Pride House, in the Pride Park and at the Parade. Additionally, this year we had concerts and DJs at a venue close by to give an alternative to the boys on Friday and the girls on Saturday. The main events were a huge success, and both had more than 2000 guests. Unfortunately, the additional events at the alternative venue had a disappointing attendance which resulted in a sizeable loss.

The EuroPride Parade The Police reported on Twitter that they lost the count of people. It is later reported that more than 100 000 people watched at least 20 000 people marching the 3 kilometer route from the multi-cultural center of Oslo, through the cent- er, in from the Parliament and ended outside the Pride Park. The Parade had among others the Minister of Cul- ture, the Mayor and the Vice Mayor of Oslo in front to support the message of the parade. In total, there was three ministers from the Government joining. The Parade hosted all the LGBTIQ organizations, political parties, NGOs, the Army, the Police, the Church, choirs and more. The Parade had more than 70 sections and thousands of people joining in.

Marketing The marketing was planned together with Visit Oslo, that also supported the campaign in 2013. The marketing started ear- ly, with a significant European coverage starting in the sum- mer of 2013. This included visiting several prides in Europe, and inviting international journalists to the Oslo Pride in 2013 to report about Oslo. This journalistic presence in Oslo in 2013 resulted in articles in several medias in countries like , Germany, Den- mark and Sweden. The Euro Pride 2014 was also released on Facebook, and it was mainly marketed there. More than 20 000 are following the page, and the campaign reached more than 350 000 people within the main segment located in Europe and North America. The one thing that did not go as planned the entertainment in the Pride Park. During and after the event 750 guests were asked about their opinion about the festival, and 10% of these were from outside Norway. When they answered how they would rate EuroPride 2014 42% called it excellent, 45% good, 11% fair and 2% poor. The fact that guests so clearly expressed that they are satisfied reinforces the impression the EuroPride 2014 was a success.
