Birmingham City Council Equality Act 2010 Specific Duties Information to Be Published 2014
BIRMINGHAM CITY COUNCIL EQUALITY ACT 2010 SPECIFIC DUTIES INFORMATION TO BE PUBLISHED 2014 1. SECTION 1 – WHY WE PUBLISH EQUALITY INFORMATION Birmingham City Council like other public authorities has for the last two years published equalities information, in demonstrating compliance with the Equality Act 2010 to give due regard to: - Eliminating discrimination, harassment and victimisation - Advancing equality of opportunity between persons who share a protected characteristic and those who do not share it - Fostering good relations between persons who share a protected characteristic and those who do not share it. In support of the general duty and to respond to the two requirements of the specific duties the council must: - Publish equality information - Set and publish equality objectives Publish equalities information – we publish equality information from each of our service directorates to demonstrate our understanding of how different people might be affected by our activities. This helps us to ensure that services are appropriate and accessible to all and meet different people’s needs. The information published includes customer profiling information; types of services being delivered, and consultation and engagement activities. The City Council takes account of the potential impacts of its policies and decisions on equalities, social cohesion and social inclusion, through a risk analysis process referred to as Equality Assessment (EA). This ensures that the potential implications of such proposals on those with the ‘protected characteristics’ covered under the Equality Act 2010 are considered. This has formed the basis of the Council’s programme of Equality Assessments, and supplements other information, which the council collects and publishes on a range of other areas. -

Jacob Birch CHAIRMAN’S REPORT After a decade with LGBT+ Conservatives, more than half of them in the chair, it’s time to hand-on the baton I’m not disappearing completely. One of my proudest achievements here has been the LGBT+ Conservatives Candidates’ Fund, which has supported so many people into parliament and raised tens of thousands of pounds. As the fund matures it is moving into a new governance structure, and I hope to play a role in that future. I am thrilled to be succeeded by Elena Bunbury. I know that she will bring new energy to the organisation, and I hope it will continue to thrive under her leadership. I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me on this journey. In particular Emma Warman, Matthew Green and John Cope who have provided wise counsel as Deputy Chairman. To Sean Anstee who has transformed the finances of the organisation. -

International Ambassadors for Birmingham Pride Tender Code SBD05 Tender Opportunity This is an exciting new opportunity which will require the successful tender to provide an international ambassadors/security services for Birmingham Pride for a 13 month period starting May 2012 to June 2013. Who is the client Birmingham Pride is a weekend long Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) festival held annually in Southside’s Gay Village in Birmingham UK. This year it is held over the Queens Diamond Jubilee weekend, Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd June 2012. It is uniquely the largest two day LGBT festival in the UK, which features a carnival parade through the city plus entertainment zones including a main stage, cabaret marquee, funfair, community village green, central market street and the friendliest street party. The 2012 theme is “It gets better” which highlights the worldwide youth LGBT campaign to help inspire and show individuals what their lives could be like as openly LGBT adults. The festival is a welcoming place to celebrate the LGBT community whether you’re gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or straight. Tender Opportunity – Description of Requirements Birmingham Pride wishes to appoint an agency to carry out the International ambassador services for the festival and create and police a safe and secure environment for all visitors and to build positive communication with all visitors and stakeholders for Birmingham Pride 2012 and 2013. It would be expected that the successful agency would provide and deliver a first class, safe environment for all visitors, secure the licensed areas at all entry and exit points including the pride parade which contains rolling road closures. -

Q319 Chair: I thank our witnesses for appearing before us today. As you will know, the Procedure Committee has, since the beginning of March, been conducting an ongoing inquiry into the way in which Parliament and the House of Commons operate in the light of the restrictions imposed on all of us as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. We are carrying out a short inquiry on whether specific improvements could be made to how the Chamber operates in light of the ongoing restrictions. In particular, we are looking at the call lists for debates and the way in which time limits operate, although we know that there will be other issues that Members will wish to discuss. They are the key points that we are focusing on with a view to making some recommendations to the Government before the next recess, which I know has been announced. Hence why it is a very short, sharp piece of work. It does not get in the way of our ongoing piece of work looking at the overall way in which coronavirus impacts our procedures, but it is very specifically looking at those areas. -
