West Bayshore Drive Traverse City, Michigan 49684 231-946-2647 [email protected] (c) Maritime Heritage Alliance 2011 1 1770's WELCOME History of the 1770's British Armed Sloop, WELCOME About mid 1700’s John Askin came over from Ireland to fight for the British in the American Colonies during the French and Indian War (in Europe known as the Seven Years War). When the war ended he had an opportunity to go back to Ireland, but stayed here and set up his own business. He and a partner formed a trading company that eventually went bankrupt and Askin spent over 10 years paying off his debt. He then formed a new company called the Southwest Fur Trading Company; his territory was from Montreal on the east to Minnesota on the west including all of the Northern Great Lakes. He had three boats built: Welcome, Felicity and Archange. Welcome is believed to be the first vessel he had constructed for his fur trade. Felicity and Archange were named after his daughter and wife. The origin of Welcome’s name is not known. He had two wives, a European wife in Detroit and an Indian wife up in the Straits. His wife in Detroit knew about the Indian wife and had accepted this and in turn she also made sure that all the children of his Indian wife received schooling. Felicity married a man by the name of Brush (Brush Street in Detroit is named after him). -

SANTA MARIA MANUELA SHIPS MANUAL FOR TRAINEE GUESTS WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION Santa Maria Manuela (SMM) was launched on May 10 1937, in Lisbon, Portugal. The ship was built in the CUF shipyard in 62 days, together with its sister ship Creoula. The moment when the hull of SMM touched the waters of the River Tagus was witnessed by thousands, capturing the hearts of the people of Portugal, and marking the beginning of an iconic journey. Between 1937 and 1993, SMM transported thousands of sailors to Newfoundland and Greenland in the pursuit of cod, the prize catch for the people of Portugal. Life was harsh onboard. Sailors had to contend with cramped cold conditions below decks, and above with the bitter chill of the north winds, frequent storms and long hours fishing the perilous seas of the Grand Banks in small boats. In 1940 a new danger emerged; the submarines of the II World War. Santa Maria Manuela is one of the last ships of the mythical White Fleet – a group of cod-fishing vessels that had their hulls painted white to avoid being torpedoed during the military conflicts. Between 2007 and 2010 the ship was rebuilt by the fishing group Pascoal, and subsequently was taken on by Recheio Cash & Carry, part of the Jeronimo Martins Group. The farsighted vision of the current owners has created a culture of sail training, expedition, exploration and team development aboard the Santa Maria Manuela. Passenger trainees are welcomed aboard as members of the sailing crew. During your voyage you will be given every opportunity get personally involved in the sailing of the ship. -

Chapter Twelve have used the Serv-o-matic available at Syren Ship Model Company. It’s a simple device and you Starting the rigging process… could no doubt make one similar should you want to. Before I begin describing the rigging process, I must remind folks that it would be a great time to slip that traveler ring onto the bowsprit. I forgot to mention this in the previous chapter. Traveler rings are also available for this model at SSMC. They are made already blackened and simply need to be slid onto the bowsprit before we begin rigging. A served rope basically has a thinner line wrapped around it as shown above. It can be needed for a ropes entire length. The serving machine allows you to wrap a standard rope with a thin thread for an unlimited length. See below for a photo showing a served line …bottom…in comparison to a non-served length of rope. I will be rigging the model in a specific order that I find comfortable to work in. I am assuming that this is probably not your first model and you may have developed a different order to rig your model that has become comfortable for you. But even so, I will describe the different tasks to rig the Cheerful in the order I proceeded in. Thimbles- Whenever a thimble is needed I will show this detail. This is yet another optional detail. Critical and Popular Reaction to Ibsen in England: 1872-1906 by Tracy Cecile Davis Thesis supervisors: Dr. Richard Beacham Prof. Michael R. Booth Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, University of Warwick, Department of Theatre Studies. August, 1984. ABSTRACT This study of Ibsen in England is divided into three sections. The first section chronicles Ibsen-related events between 1872, when his work was first introduced to a Briton, and 1888, when growing interest in the 'higher drama' culminated in a truly popular edition of three of Ibsen's plays. During these early years, knowledge about and appreciation of Ibsen's work was limited to a fairly small number of intellectuals and critics. A matinee performance in 1880 attracted praise, but successive productions were bowdlerized adaptations. Until 1889, when the British professional premiere of A Doll's House set all of London talking, the lack of interest among actors and producers placed the responsibility for eliciting interest in Ibsen on translators, lecturers, and essayists. The controversy initiated by A Doll's House was intensified in 1891, the so-called Ibsen Year, when six productions, numerous new translations, debates, lectures, published and acted parodies, and countless articles considered the value and desirability of Ibsen's startling modern plays. -
