Title: Snakes and Earrings She was attracted by his piercings so decided to Snakes and Earrings her tongue pierced too. Pain Snakes and Earrings the only way that she can feel she is alive. The tatoo designer, Shiba, is also getting curious about Rui due to his sadist split. Ama protects Rui with violence and Shiba is using violence to love her. A strange love triangle of violence and sex and Rui's body changed with a tatoo and a large piercing. Written by Kanagon. Like the wonderful book this was based on, the film is a small little gem. One that revolves around just three people. It explores the 'dark' world they come from, full of piercings, tattoos and rough sex. The film is very sensual but doesn't exclude passion from proceedings. Everything in the film is detailed as some form of release from the suffocating world each Snakes and Earrings finds them self in. Shot with utter simplicity, the development of the main tattoo is the perfect metaphor for the development of the female lead, as she becomes entwined with demons. The shots are calm and well considered, each one bringing to life a darker world in an accessible way. An excellent adaptation. Looking for something to watch? WHAT IS MODERNITY?: THE MODERNIST, POSTMODERNIST, AND PARA-MODERNIST WORLDS IN THE FICTION OF MURAKAMI HARUKI by MICHAEL FRANKLIN WARD (Under the Direction of Carolyn Jones Medine) ABSTRACT The following thesis is the culmination of three years of studying the fiction of the Japanese writer Murakami Haruki (1949- ) and various theories of modernism, postmodernism, and paramodernism of both Japanese and Western origin. In this thesis I map out both prewar and postwar Japanese modernism and how Murakami fits or does not fit into their parameters, map out how Murakami creates his own personal history in postmodern Japan, and how he acts as a paramodernist “filter” between East and West. Running July 10-20 and screening 27 features with 8 special guests, JAPAN CUTS 2014 encompasses a thrilling cross section of cinephilic genre oddities, sword-swinging period action, profound documentaries, cathartic melodramas, warped comedies and cutting-edge arthouse cinema made in and around Japan. Guests include superstar performers and independent auteurs opening up in rare Q&As and dynamic parties rocking Japan Society’s historic theater and waterfall atrium. As in past years, the festival dovetails with the 13th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), co-presenting 13 titles in the JAPAN CUTS lineup July 10-13. JAPAN CUTS 2014 again earns the distinction as “New York’s premiere Japanese cinema event,” every title never before screened in New York City, “unspooling across a kaleidoscopic range of taste and aesthetics” (The Wall Street Journal). Boasting 1 World Premiere, 3 International Premieres, 7 North American Premieres, 6 U.S. Premieres, 5 East Coast Premieres, and 4 New York Premieres, every day of the festival provides a must-see event for the NYC cinephile, follower of Japanese art and culture, and devoted world cinema aficionado alike.

Running from March 15 through May 1, our largest and most diverse selections yet, are available online or at the Drive-in as we continue with the “combo” format from last season. THE TOWN OF HEADCOUNTS, a dystopian sci-fi thriller from Japan will kick off the new season, and we will close the festival with a quirky rom-com READY O/R KNOT from Hong Kong on May 1. During the six-week run, you will discover a full plate of unhinged, genre-bending films, including uncompromising art-house gems shot in 14 different Asian cities that are only a couple clicks away for you to watch. When introducing our first ever “West Meets East Showcase” featuring co-productions directed by non- Asian filmmakers, Sophia Wong Boccio, Festival Director, said “this new category is an excellent example of bridging cultures across continents by the creative filmmakers.” It is also our pleasure to honor a talented Japanese actress, Kasumi Arimura, who will receive our festival’s Bright Star Award. She will be starring in two films: AND LIFE GOES ON a story of love, survival and hope in the aftermath of the Japanese earthquake in March 2011, and A DAY-OFF OF KATSUMI ARIMURA (Episode One: AFTER MY HOMECOMING) – a mother-daughter dynamic showing award-winning Hirokazu Kore-eda at his best. A special thank-you video by Kasumi Arimura will introduce these two films. Last but not the least, to enhance your appreciation of the films, most will be followed by video interviews with directors and/or cast, moderated by our team of virtual film experts.

No death may be called futile.” - Yukio Mishima On November 25th 1970, a man committed ritual suicide inside the Tokyo headquarters of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, leaving behind a legacy of masterpieces and a controversy that echoes to this day. The man was Yukio Mishima, one of Japan’s greatest and most celebrated novelists. With four members of his own private army - the Tatenokai - Mishima had taken the commandant hostage and called upon the assembled military outside the Ministry to overthrow their society and restore the powers of the Emperor. When the soldiers mocked and jeered Mishima, he cut short his speech and withdrew to the commandant’s office where he committed seppuku - the samurai warrior’s death - tearing open his belly with a ceremonial knife before being beheaded by one of his colleagues.
