PRAXAIR AND LIBBEY GRANT FOR EMISSIONS REDUCTION PROJECT

Praxair, Inc. and its customer, Libbey Inc., together have been awarded a EUR 2.3 million LIFE grant (LIFE15 CCM/NL/000121 – LIFE OPTIMELT) from the European Commission. The LIFE programme is the European Union’s financial instrument for supporting environmental, conservation and climate action projects. This grant is supporting the installation of Praxair’s OPTIMELT® thermochemical regenerator (TCR) system at Libbey’s glass melting facility in the Netherlands. In April 2016, Praxair and Libbey, one of the largest glassware and tableware manufacturers globally, announced they would install the OPTIMELT TCR system as well as an on-site oxygen vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) plant at Libbey’s facility. The system is designed to support a capacity realignment plan that reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by approximately 45-60% and 30-40% respectively. Through Praxair’s proprietary OPTIMELT TCR system, incoming natural gas is heated and reacts with a portion of the flue gas to produce a hot syngas fuel that recovers the waste heat stored in regenerators for more efficient combustion in the furnace. Both the OPTIMELT TCR system and oxygen supply are scheduled to start up in 2017. “At Praxair we are achieving our mission of making our planet more productive through the development of technologies that reduce emissions, save energy and lessen our reliance on natural resources,” said Todd Skare, chief technology officer at Praxair. “Through our innovative OPTIMELT technology and VPSA oxygen supply system, we are improving air quality and helping Libbey to achieve its sustainability goals.” “Libbey is committed to minimizing its impact on the environment through the reduction and conservation of natural resources,” said Terry Hartman, vice president, global engineering and manufacturing support, Libbey Inc. “Reductions in global air pollution require innovative solutions that go beyond filters. In partnership with Praxair, we have constructed and launched the highest- efficiency glass melter in the industry at our Royal Leerdam facility in the Netherlands. This new furnace represents the type of collaboration and process innovation that enables us to help lead change as a responsible global company.” businessnews www.glassonline.com

OCMI can offer a very com- plete range of ampoule and vial forming machines to be con- nected with after-forming lines suitable for the installation of a number of optional devices in accordance with the type of con- tainer needed by the customer. Production and technological development are organized in three plants, respectively locat- ed in Milan (Italian headquar- ters), Chelles (in France with MODERNE MECANIQUE) and Ahmedabad (with OCMI INDIA).

Ampoule forming Chinese factories interested in starting or increasing their glass ampoules production can choose their forming machine among MM30 made by MODERNE MECANIQUE, with a maxi- mum output of 4,500 pieces per hour, and the 36-station machine FA36S, produced at OCMI Italian facilities. This second model is very much appreciated by the main Chinse manufactur- ers thanks to its station for first bottom forming that allows to produce one more ampoule per each tube and to reduce glass waste. Production efficiency, one of the most important parameters for end-users, depends not only on standard equipment but also on the optional devices installed. The OPTISTEM/2 camera system for dimensional control developed by OCMI for ampoule forming machines MM30 and FA36S surely helps to keep the ampoule stem diameter with- in more tight tolerances and improve the output quality. On 17 March 2017, Georg Kämer, Prevention Manager at VBG Mainz, present- ed the certificate to Dr. Michael Blumbach, Director of Glass Products at De Dietrich Process Systems. The chemical plant equipment manufacturer adopted a quick method of hazard assessment in its factory. When necessary, employees verify with the aid of a check-list shortly before starting work, that the workplace meets all the occupational safety crite- ria. Cases of near accident are also analysed and discussed in an Occupational Safety Committee. The goal is to eliminate any potential danger points. “We want to continuously improve occupational safety in a structured and sustained man- ner, and reduce the number of Production of the biggest glass work-related accidents and near bottles in the world at De Dietrich accidents,” declared Dr. Michael Process System in Mainz

producers are, in fact, looking for diversified, premium quality ranges to showcase their prod- ucts. The plant’s furnace has been completely rebuilt, and its five production lines modernized. The Oiry site, which celebrat- ed its 40th anniversary in 2015 and employs 160 people, pro- duces 550,000 bottles a day. Since it was founded in 1975, Verallia’s Oiry plant has spe- cialized in so-called 'carbonated' products (Champagne, sparkling wines, ciders, etc.) and large- capacity containers (3-15 litres). The site thus manufactures the whole range of Champagne bot- tles, from quarts (20cl) to the Nabuchodonosor (15 litres). Jean-Pierre Floris, Verallia's chairman and CEO, declared: “The Champagne bottle is cer- tainly the most demanding glass bottle in terms of quality, and we take pride in being the leader in this market. This investment enables us to offer better quality, better design capabilities and bet- ter customer service”. The new installations also con- siderably improve the working conditions for the plant's teams. More than 15 per cent of the total investment package was actually earmarked to meet this objective with a special focus on work sta- tion ergonomics and lighting. Over 200 people attended the inauguration of the site’s new installations: customers, local community representatives and Verallia’s two equity funds - Apollo and Bpifrance. O
