Dreizehn dieser Arten (43 %) sind tropischen Ursprungs. Die San José Schildlaus (Diaspidiotus perniciosus (COMSTOCK)), die rote Austernschildlaus (Epidiaspis leperii (SIGNORET)) und die Maulbeerschildlaus (Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (TARGIONI- TOZZETTI)) (alle Diaspididae) rufen schwere Schäden an ihren Wirtspflanzen – im Freiland kultivierten Zierpflanzen hervor. Die ebenfalls nicht einheimische, invasive Art Pulvinaria floccifera (WESTWOOD) (Coccidae) wird für Österreich zum ersten Mal gemeldet. Summary Collection data are provided for 30 species of scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) found in Vienna during March 2008. Thirteen (43 %) of these species are of exotic origin. Diaspidiotus perniciosus (COMSTOCK), Epidiaspis leperii (Signoret) and Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (TARGIONI-TOZZETTI) (Diaspididae) were found causing serious damage to ornamental plants growing outdoors. The non-native, invasive Pulvinaria floccifera (WESTWOOD) (Coccidae) is recorded from Austria for the first time. A. citrina is morphologically very similar to the Californian red scale, Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell), and was considered to be a variety until Nel (1933) raised it to specific level based on a comparative study of their ecology, biology and morphology. Bayer computer code: AONDCI EU Annex designation: II/A1 HOSTS A. citrina is polyphagous attacking plant species belonging to more than 50 genera in 32 families. The main hosts of economic importance are Citrus spp., especially oranges (C. sinensis), but the insect is also recorded incidentally on a wide range of ornamentals and some fruit crops including Acacia, bananas (Musa paradisiaca), Camellia including tea (C. sinensis), Clematis, Cucurbitaceae, Eucalyptus, Euonymus, guavas (Psidium guajava), Hedera helix, Jasminum, Ficus, Ligustrum, Magnolia, mangoes (Mangifera indica), Myrica, olives (Olea europea), peaches (Prunus persica), poplars (Populus), Rosa, Schefflera actinophylla, Strelitzia reginae, Viburnum and Yucca. The main potential hosts in the EPPO region are Citrus spp. growing in the southern part of the region, around the Mediterranean. These aliens come in the form of plants, animals and microbes that have been introduced into an area from other parts of the world, and have been able to displace indigenous species. Invasive alien species are emerging as one of the major threats to sustainable development, on a par with global warming and the destruction of life-support systems. Increased mobility and human interaction have been key drivers in the spread of Indigenous Alien Species. Invasion by alien species is a global phenomenon, with threatening negative impacts to the indigenous biological diversity as well as related negative impacts on human health and overall his well-being. Thus, threatening the ecosystems on the earth. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) found that trends in species introductions, as well as modelling predictions, strongly suggest that biological invasions will continue to increase in number and impact. An additional concern is that multiple human impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems will decrease the natural biotic resistance to invasions and, therefore, the number of biotic communities dominated by invasive species will increase. India one of the 17 "megadiverse" countries and is composed of a diversity of ecological habitats like forests, grasslands, wetlands, coastal and marine ecosystems, and desert ecosystems have been reported with 40 percent of alien flora species and 25 percent out of them invasive by National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resource. -

Gloomy scale (Melanaspis tenebricosa Comstock; Hemiptera: Diaspididae), a pest of red maples (Acer rubrum L.; Sapindales: Sapindaceae) in the southeast United States, reaches injurious levels in cities and reduces tree condition. Here, we use a chronosequence field study in Raleigh, NC, to investigate patterns in gloomy scale densities over time from the nursery to 13 yr after tree planting, with a goal of informing more efficient management of gloomy scale on urban trees. We examine how impervious surfaces affect the progression of infestations and how infestations affect tree condition. We find that gloomy scale densities remain low on trees until at least seven seasons after tree planting, providing a key timepoint for starting scouting efforts. Scouting should focus on tree branches, not tree trunks. Scale density on tree branches increases with impervious surface across the entire studied tree age range and increases faster on individual trees that are planted in areas with high impervious surface cover. -

(3 text-figs., 27 pis.). The genus Chionaspis is revised, and a modified concept of the genus is proposed. Fifty-nine species are recognized as members of the genus. All these species are limited to the Northern Hemisphere: many of them are distributed in eastern Asia and North America, and much fewer ones in western Asia and the Mediterranean Region. In Eurasia most species have been recorded from particular plants and many are associated with Fagaceae, while in North America polyphagy is rather prevailing and the hosts are scattered over much more diverse plants. In the number and arrangement of the modified macroducts in the 2nd instar males many eastern Asian species are uniform, while North American species show diverse patterns. -

Department of Zoology, University of Kashmir, Hazratbal, Srinagar - 190006, Jammu and Kashmir, India *Corresponding author E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT: San Jose scale Quadraspidiotus perniciosus is a key pest of apple crop in the northern states of India. The efficacy of entomopathogenic fungi - Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae sensu lato and Lecanicillium lecanii against San Jose scale was examined in three apple orchards, each located at Srinagar, Bandipora and Pulwama districts in Kashmir. The relative pathogenicity of these fungi against the pest was also evaluated during field trials. Mortality was monitored at 2-day intervals until 30 days after application. All three fungal pathogens caused mortality of the pest particularly with the increase in treatment concentration. High mortality (76-77%) was determined with B. bassiana at 15 × 105 conidia/ml. formulation followed by L. lecanii at the same formulation (mortality 73-75%) at all the experimental sites tested. M. anisopliae sensu lato was significantly less effective (mortality 47-67%) in all the three field trials. The results demonstrate the suitability of entomopathogenic fungi for controlling San Jose scale. KEY WORDS: Biological -
