  • Art Nouveau Ljubljana
LJUBLJANA T O W N T R A I L ART NOUVEAU ART NOUVEAU - ART RENOUVEAU 2014-2017 THERE ARE NO STRAIGHT LINES OR SHARP CORNERS IN NATURE. THEREFORE, BUILDINGS MUST HAVE NO STRAIGHT LINES OR SHARP CORNERS. ANTONIO GAUDI LJUBLJANA ART NOUVEAU The term »Secession Ljubljana« (the term »secession« in Slovenia is used after the example of the Vienna Secession) is a name for the neighbourhood between the old city centre and the main train station. This neighbourhood was mostly (re)built between the years of 1895 and 1910. It includes many important and well preserved architectural art works, but its pride is mostly in the richly decorated facades, which give it a special character. On Easter, the 14th of April 1895 Ljubljana, with 31,000 citizens and 1,400 buildings, was shaken by a very strong earthquake. About 10% of the buildings had to be demolished and all the rest were in need of a restoration. The city turned into a vivacious building site, in the next decade over 400 buildings were made, many were restored, electrical public lighting was introduced in the city and the sewage system was improved. A renaissance of the city began, that left important traces in the city centre all until today. MIKLOŠIČ SQUARE The square infront of the Judge Palace was first symbolically called the Slovenian square and was made by the plans of Maks Fabiani in 1900. The park was almost completely surrounded by buildings, built between the years 1900 and 1907 and represents the most beautiful Secession ambient in Ljubljana.

Marjeta Ciglenečki* Abstract The paper deals with the question of modernism in the post WW II period when the new political situation in Eastern Europe brought significant changes in art. The case of the Slovene painter France Mihelič (1907– 1998) illustrates how important personal experience was in the transformation from realism to modernism as well as how crucial it was for a talented artist to be acquainted with contemporary trends in the main Western European art centres. After WW II, most Slovene artists travelled to Paris in order to advance creatively, yet France Mihelič’s stay in the French city (1950) stands out. Mihelič is an acknowledged representative of fantastic art who reached his artistic peak in the 1950s when he exhibited and received awards at key art events in Europe and South America.

International Symposium in Honor of 50 years “The Social Construction of Reality” 28–30 April 2016 University of Vienna PROGRAM Social Constructivism as Paradigm? Welcome to: International Symposium in Honor of 50 years “The Social Construction of Reality” Dear Colleagues, The year 2016 marks an important anniversary for sociology as 50 years have passed since Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann published their work: “The Social Construction of Reality”. This book influenced not only the sociology of knowledge but sociological theory formation in general. Furthermore, it had an impact on the discourse in other disciplines: Social constructivism has become the label of a widespread way of thinking in the very diverse settings within the social sciences, the humanities as well as in manifold trans-disciplinary studies. Therefore, we are delighted to welcome you at the University of Vienna. Over the course of the next three days we are looking forward to interesting presentations and fruitful discussions. These contributions are connected to the analysis of narratives on biography and on everyday life, which are turning to be relevant considering the increasing challenges with which individuals are confronted to in contemporary societies, also in “peripheral” societies, like the Brazilian. Schutz’s phenomenological approach conceives to individuals a reasonable interpretative possibility. The permanent reconfiguration of similarities and differences to others operated by individuals is done on the lifeworld, in which works the systems of relevance and typification as the key to understand individual’s action in everyday life. INTRODUctION Burrel, Spaç, Qafë-Bari, Ruzyně, Pankrác, Mírov, Leopoldov, Valdice, Jáchymov, Bytíz u Přibrami, Białołęka, Aiud, Gherla, Jilava, Piteşti, Recsk, Lovech, Belene, Idrizovo, Goli otok. These are names that mean little or nothing to many. But to East Europeans from Central Europe to the farthest reaches of the Balkans, they form an indelible part of their collective memory as the darkest page in the forty-five-year history of communism in the region. They are the names of detention centers, prison camps, and forced labor camps that corrupted the landscape of Eastern Europe from the end of World War II to the collapse of communism in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Although less familiar than the Soviet gulag made famous through the writings of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and undeniably Soviet in inspiration, they were no less brutal and dehumanizing.1 They became a living hell for a huge number of human beings from every walk of life, especially intellectuals, artists, and students whose only crime in many in- stances was a repugnance for the repressive Communist system that demanded conformity and brooked no opposition. Resistance to the imposition of Communist rule throughout Eastern Europe manifested itself almost from the very beginning and grew into mass, and some- times violent, eruptions of protest, among them the Poznań riots in Poland in October 1956, the Hungarian Revolution later that same year, the Prague Spring that led to the Soviet and Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, the rise of Solidarity in Poland in the early 1980s—the reverberations from which were ultimately felt throughout all of Eastern Europe—and the bloody upheaval that ended the reign of Nicolae Ceauşescu in Romania in December 1989.
