US-China Foreign Language, ISSN 1539-8080 September 2014, Vol. 12, No. 9, 728-735 D DAVID PUBLISHING A Comparative Study of Livestock’s Name Between Ancient and Modern Yi Language of China∗ YANG Liu-jin Honghe University, Mengzi City, China The traditional pronunciations of domestic animal lexemes recorded in ancient Nisu(Yi) manuscripts differ significantly from the vernacular pronunciations of their modern counterparts. Thus, in the process of translating such texts, when a translator substitutes modern Nisu for ancient Nisu, not only can many of the characteristics of the original text be lost, but the original meaning may also be completely modified. Currently a number of specialists and scholars, both in China and elsewhere, are familiar with modern Nisu but have no such familiarity with the language’s ancient forms. The paper grants Nisu researchers a better grasp of the differences between the language’s ancient and modern forms in order to help others avoid mistakes in translating ancient Nisu manuscripts. This is accomplished through a brief comparative analysis of Nisu names for livestock and fowl—then and now. Keywords: Yi Language, livestock, name Introduction Nisu is a Tibet-Burman language of the Ngwi branch which has been officially classified as an ethnic linguistic sub-branch of the Yi nationality in China. The Nisu retain use of their language in both spoken and written forms. The current population of the official Yi nationality stands at 7,776,230 (PCPC, 2002) and is distributed through Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi, and Guizhou Provinces. The new taxon is recovered from the Lower Jurassic Fengjiahe Formation of Shuangbai County, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, and is represented by a partial cranium. Shuangbaisaurus is unique in possessing parasagittal crests along the orbital dorsal rims. It is also distinguishable from the other two lager-bodied parasagittal crested Early Jurassic theropods (Dilophosaurus and Sinosaurus) by a unique combination of features, such as higher than long premaxillary body, elevated ventral edge of the premaxilla, and small upper temporal fenestra. Comparative morphological study indicates that “Dilophosaurus” sinensis could potentially be assigned to Sinosaurus, but probably not to the type species. The discovery of Shuangbaisaurus will help elucidate the evolution of basal theropods, especially the role of various bony cranial ornamentations had played in the differentiation of early theropods. -

Introduction 1. According to the Feasibility Study Report and RF, the Project involves neither land acquisition nor house demolition, and involves temporary land occupation only. This report aims to strengthen the development of ethnic minorities in the project area, and includes mitigation and benefit enhancing measures, and funding sources. The project area involves a number of ethnic minorities, including Yi, Hani and Lisu. B. Socioeconomic profile of ethnic minorities 2. Poverty and income: The Project involves 16 cities/prefectures in Yunnan Province. In 2013, there were 6.61 million poor population in Yunnan Province, which accounting for 17.54% of total population. In 2013, the per capita net income of rural residents in Yunnan Province was 6,141 yuan. 3. Gender Heads of households are usually men, reflecting the superior status of men. Both men and women do farm work, where men usually do more physically demanding farm work, such as fertilization, cultivation, pesticide application, watering, harvesting and transport, while women usually do housework or less physically demanding farm work, such as washing clothes, cooking, taking care of old people and children, feeding livestock, and field management. In Lijiang and Dali, Bai and Naxi women also do physically demanding labor, which is related to ethnic customs. Means of production are usually purchased by men, while daily necessities usually by women. -

Abstract Data on the status and distribution of the green peafowl in Yunnan Province, China, were collected from historical data, field surveys carried out between March and June 2007 around Shuangbai and Baoshan, and from a correspondence survey among city, state and county Forestry Bureaux and Protection Agencies. The data showed that green peafowl occurred historically in at least 42 locations, but by the late 1980s they were already absent from Yingjiang, Tengchong, Liuku, Mengzi and Hekou, and by the late 1990s were also absent from Mengla, Jinping and Luchun and Jianshui County. Green peafowl were found to be present in 31 known areas: Weishan, Yongren, Jinghong, Ruili, Longchuan, Luxi, Longling, Changning, Fengqing, Yunxian, Yongde, Chenkang, Kengma, Cangyuan, Shuangjiang, Lincang, Jingdong, Jinggu, Chenyuan, Pu'er, Simao, Menghai, Mojiang, Shiping, Maitreya, Sinping, Shuangbai, Chuxiong, Lufeng, Nanhua, and Yao'an. Among these, Weishan, Yongren, Jing Hong, Mengla have only supported green peafowl since the latter half of the 1980s. The degree to which this admirable political ideal has actually been respected has varied throughout the history of the PRC: taken seriously in the early and mid-1950s, it was systematically ignored dur- ing the twenty years of High Socialism from the late 1950s to the early 1980s and then revived again with the Opening and Reform policies of the past two decades (Heberer, 1989: 23-29). The presence of minority “autonomous” ter- ritories, preferential policies in school admissions, and birth quotas (Sautman, 1998) and the extraordinary emphasis on developing “socialist” versions of minority visual and performing arts (Litzinger, 2000; Schein, 2000; Oakes, 1998) all testify to serious attention to multinationalism in the cultural and administrative realms, even if minority culture is promoted in a homogenized socialist version and even if everybody knows that “autono- mous” territories are far less autonomous, for example, than an American state or a Swiss canton. But although the party state now preaches multinationalism and allows limited expression of ethnonational autonomy, it also preaches and promotes progress—and thus runs straight into a paradox: progress is defined in objectivist, modernist terms, which relegate minority cultures to a more MODERN CHINA, Vol. -

Today, more than 500 cultivars and hybrids are recognized. Many ancient camellia trees still survive and are managed by local peopl. A few records on cha-hua culture exist, but no studies expound the interaction between C. reticulata and traditional culture of ethnic groups. The contribution of traditional culture of different nationalities and regions to the diversity of Camellia reticulate is discussed. Methods: Ethnobotanical surveys were conducted throughout Central and Western Yunnan to investigate and document the traditional culture related to Camellia reticulata. Five sites were selected to carry out the field investigation. Information was collected using participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and participatory rural appraisal (PRA). Results: Most of the ancient camellia trees were preserved or saved in the courtyards of old buildings and cultural or religious sites. Religion-associated culture plays an important role in C. reticulata protection. In every site we investigated, we found extensive traditional culture on C. reticulata and its management. These traditional cultures have not only protected the germplasm resources of C. reticulata, but also improved the diversity of Camellia cultivars. Conclusions: There are abundant and diverse genetic resources of cha-hua, Camellia reticulata in Yunnan. -

Thirteen species of Schima are distributed in subtropical China. Many of them appear as dominant canopy species in the subtropical forests. To date, Schima species richness distribution patterns of China have remained unknown. Meanwhile, there has been a longtime debate as to whether forests dominated by Schima species are early or late successional forests. We aim to clarify Schima species richness patterns and these species’ roles in the forest succession and regeneration dynamics of the subtropical ecosystem in Yunnan Province, China. Method: We mapped Schima species richness distribution patterns in China. Based on 71 vegetation plots, we analyzed forest characteristics, population structure, and regeneration dynamics of Schima species in Yunnan. Results: Yunnan was found to harbor the greatest richness and the highest rarity-weighted richness of Schima species in the subtropical regions of China. We classified five primary and six secondary forest types containing Schima species as one of dominants. Yunnan had the high floristic diversity and varying stand structure of forests containing Schima species. The Schima species studied generally had a sporadic regeneration type and a long life- span. -

The endangered Green Peafowl (Pavo muticus) has experienced sharp popula- tion declines and distribution range diminishing both in China and Southeast Asia. Field population surveys have not been conducted in China since the 1990s, which hindered conservation planning and decision-making. Methods: With interview and line transects methods, we fgured out the population and distribution changes of Green Peafowl across its historical ranges over the past three decades in China during 2014‒2017. Results: The Green Peafowl once habituated in 54 counties in China. Nearly 60% of the distribution counties were lost in the past three decades, with the left 22 counties distributed in central, southern and western Yunnan, SW China. Population decrease detected in all distribution areas except for Shuangbai and Xinping county where more than 60% of the total population is located. Only about 30% of the former bird population were recorded with the same interviewing method as 20 years ago. Three birds, 1 carcass, 6 calls and 12 footprints were detected along the 865 km line transects, indicating extremely low encounter rate of Green Peafowl in feld. Sharp decreases in fock sizes were also detected, from 8‒20 birds per fock in the 1990s to 3‒5 birds at present.
