US-China Foreign Language, ISSN 1539-8080 September 2014, Vol. 12, No. 9, 728-735 D DAVID PUBLISHING A Comparative Study of Livestock’s Name Between Ancient and Modern Yi Language of China∗ YANG Liu-jin Honghe University, Mengzi City, China The traditional pronunciations of domestic animal lexemes recorded in ancient Nisu(Yi) manuscripts differ significantly from the vernacular pronunciations of their modern counterparts. Thus, in the process of translating such texts, when a translator substitutes modern Nisu for ancient Nisu, not only can many of the characteristics of the original text be lost, but the original meaning may also be completely modified. Currently a number of specialists and scholars, both in China and elsewhere, are familiar with modern Nisu but have no such familiarity with the language’s ancient forms. The paper grants Nisu researchers a better grasp of the differences between the language’s ancient and modern forms in order to help others avoid mistakes in translating ancient Nisu manuscripts. This is accomplished through a brief comparative analysis of Nisu names for livestock and fowl—then and now. Keywords: Yi Language, livestock, name Introduction Nisu is a Tibet-Burman language of the Ngwi branch which has been officially classified as an ethnic linguistic sub-branch of the Yi nationality in China. The Nisu retain use of their language in both spoken and written forms. The current population of the official Yi nationality stands at 7,776,230 (PCPC, 2002) and is distributed through Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi, and Guizhou Provinces. Traditionally, in China, the languages spoken by the Yi nationality have been divided into six major dialect regions: Northern, Eastern, Southern, Western, Central, and Southeastern (YYJS, 1987, pp. -

In January over forty members of Thammasart University faculty issued an open letter to the organizers, which in part read, A meeting in China at present would mean a tacit acceptance of the measures taken by the state, unless there will be an open critical review. Many north American colleagues privately expressed similar views. This Newsletter has made its views on Tien An Men quite clear, and we can sympathize with the position taken by our colleagues. Nevertheless, there seems to be some selectivity of outrage, when no word of protest was heard from some quarters about the continuing support given by the Chinese government to the murderous Khmer Rouge. This does not apply to the Thai academic community, sections of which were in the vanguard of the movement to reconsider Thai government policy on this issue. -

Sichuan Yi dance is a part of our country's Yi dance. It has both the common features of Yi dance and the characteristics of Sichuan Yi. Based on this, this paper takes Sichuan Yi dance as the research object, on the basis of summarizing Sichuan Yi dance, analyzes the aesthetic characteristics of Sichuan Yi dance from four aspects: natural and simple movements, profound and natural meanings, high and warm emotions, harmonious and beautiful styles, and then explains the national cultural connotation of Sichuan Yi dance, including national art and culture, national culture Historical culture, national religious culture, national folk culture, etc. KEYWORDS: Sichuan yi nationality, Dance movement, Aesthetic characteristics, Cultural connotation 1. Introduction Yi is one of the fifty-five ethnic minorities in China, ranking sixth in the number of ethnic minorities, widely distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou and other southwest provinces. Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture in Sichuan province is one of the main settlements of the Yi nationality. In the long-term development, the Yi nationality culture with both regional characteristics and ethnic characteristics has been formed, and the Yi nationality dance is an important part of the Yi nationality culture in Sichuan province. The number of dances of Sichuan Yi nationality is abundant, and the dance movements have not only unique aesthetic characteristics, but also profound ethnic cultural connotations. -

The evaluation of source rocks and the comparison of hydrocarbon sources suggest that the middle Permian hydrocarbon mainly comes from the bottom of the lower Cambrian and middle Permian, and the foreland orogeny promoted the thermal evolution of Paleozoic source rocks in northwest Sichuan to high maturity and over maturity stage. -

Mehrotra2, Yue-Gao Jin1, Wei Yang1 and Cheng-Sen Li3,* SUMMARY A new species of Pistacioxylon, Pistacioxylon leilaoensis Cheng et al., showing affinities withPistacia of the Anacardiaceae is described from the Miocene of Leilao, Yuanmou Basin, Yunnan Province, southwest China. It provides data for reconstructing the phytogeographic history of Pistacia and the paleoenvironment of the Yuanmou Basin. This fossil suggests a long history of exchange of various taxa including Pistacia between Europe and East Asia during the Tertiary. Key words: Pistacia, fossil wood, phytogeography, Xiaohe Formation, Southwest China. INTRODUCTION The Yuanmou Basin of Yunnan Province, southwest China, is well known for its Yuanmou Man (Homo erectus) (Qian 1985) and hominoid fauna fossils (He 1997). Abundant hominoid and mammal fossils have been reported since 1980 from the Late Miocene Xiaohe Formation of Leilao and Xiaohe, Yuanmou Basin, Yunnan (Pan & Zong 1991; He 1997; Harrison et al. 2002; Liu & Pan 2003; Yue et al. 2003; Qi et al. 2006). The age and character of the Xiaohe fauna are similar to those of the Late Miocene Siwalik fauna of Pakistan (Pan & Zong 1991). The Yuanmou Basin might have been an important refuge for hominoids when they became extinct in the rest of Eurasia (Zhu et al. 2005). The Late Miocene Xiaohe Formation of Leilao, Yuanmou Basin, also contains fossil woods (Zhang et al. 2002) and their study can provide important information for the reconstruction of the paleoenvironment of the basin. -

INSCRIPTIONAL RECORDS OF THE WESTERN ZHOU Robert Eno Fall 2012 Note to Readers The translations in these pages cannot be considered scholarly. They were originally prepared in early 1988, under stringent time pressures, specifically for teaching use that term. Although I modified them sporadically between that time and 2012, my final year of teaching, their purpose as course materials, used in a week-long classroom exercise for undergraduate students in an early China history survey, did not warrant the type of robust academic apparatus that a scholarly edition would have required. Since no broad anthology of translations of bronze inscriptions was generally available, I have, since the late 1990s, made updated versions of this resource available online for use by teachers and students generally. As freely available materials, they may still be of use. However, as specialists have been aware all along, there are many imperfections in these translations, and I want to make sure that readers are aware that there is now a scholarly alternative, published last month: A Source Book of Ancient Chinese Bronze Inscriptions, edited by Constance Cook and Paul Goldin (Berkeley: Society for the Study of Early China, 2016). The “Source Book” includes translations of over one hundred inscriptions, prepared by ten contributors. I have chosen not to revise the materials here in light of this new resource, even in the case of a few items in the “Source Book” that were contributed by me, because a piecemeal revision seemed unhelpful, and I am now too distant from research on Western Zhou bronzes to undertake a more extensive one. -

Among them, the bronzes labeled "Forty-second-year Lai ding" ~ ~ (of which there are two pieces), "Forty-third-year Lai ding" (ten pieces), and "Lai pan" ~~ (one piece) have in scriptions that are particularly long for inscriptions from the Western Zhou period and run respectively to 281, 316 and 372 characters in length. The inscription of the "Lai pan," containing 372 characters, is divided into two parts, the first part is narrated from Lai's point of view but employs the third-person voice, opening with the phrase, "Lai said." The second part records an appointment (ceming :IlJt frJ) ceremony that opens, "The King said." The very exceptional first part records the service of generations of Lai's ancestors to successive Zhou Kings. The five biggest were: Zhuan Xu, Di Jun, Huang Di, Yan Di and Shao Hao.However, the Zhuan Xu People seemed to have disappeared when the Yellow and Chang-jiang river valleys developed into advanced Neolithic cultures. Where had the Zhuan Xu People gone? Abstract: Shanhaijing (Classic of Mountains and Seas) records many ancient groups of people in Neolithic China. The five biggest were: Zhuan Xu, Di Jun, Huang Di, Yan Di and Shao Hao. These were not only the names of individuals, but also the names of groups who regarded them as common male ancestors. These groups used to live in the Pamirs Plateau, later spread to other places of China and built their unique ancient cultures during the Neolithic Age. Shanhaijing reveals Zhuan Xu’s offspring lived near the Tibetan Plateau in their early time. They were the first who entered the Tibetan Plateau, but almost perished due to the great environment changes, later moved to the south. Some of them entered the Sichuan Basin and became the founders of Sanxingdui Culture. Some of them even moved to the south of the Tibetan Plateau, living near the sea. Modern archaeological discoveries have revealed the authenticity of Shanhaijing ’s records. As well, it is birthplace to one of the world's oldest and most complex civilizations. By 1100 BC, a high level of artistic and technical skill in bronze casting had been achieved by the Chinese. Bronze artifacts initially were copies of clay objects, but soon evolved into shapes invoking bronze material characteristics. Essentially, the bronze alloys represented in the copper-tin-lead ternary diagram are not easily hot or cold worked and are difficult to shape by hammering, the most common techniques used by the ancient Europeans and Middle Easterners. This did not deter the Chinese, however, for they had demonstrated technical proficiency with hard, thin walled ceramics by the end of the Neolithic period and were able to use these skills to develop a most unusual casting method called the piece mold process. Advances in ceramic technology played an influential role in the progress of Chinese bronze casting where the piece mold process was more of a technological extension than a distinct innovation. Certainly, the long and specialized experience in handling clay was required to form the delicate inscriptions, to properly fit the molds together and to prevent them from cracking during the pour.
