I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract Using the surviving historical and archaeological remains, as well as contemporary stylistic reference, this thesis reconstructs one battle of the lost Lesser Attalid Monument in its entirety. This is done through digital 3D models created in free online software (Blender). The battle chosen is the Amazonomachy, consisting of 24 individual figural sculptures, with main stylistic reference taken from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the temple of Apollo Bassitas, and the Parthenon Amazonomachy. The intent of the project is to recreate both a sense of the visual reality that existed, as well as the potential emotional impacts it would have had on its audience. The goal is that the final result will be of interest to a wide audience, including art historians, reconstruction specialists, and digital artists. By providing an accurate and interactive reconstruction, this project can act as a base for scholars in several different disciplines to work from. iii Acknowledgements I would first like to thank the department of Classical Studies at the University of Waterloo for allowing me to pursue a project so outside of our regular bounds, and for being so patient with me throughout the process. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered to be the culmination of the development of the Doric order. Shapiro HE AMAZONS offer a remarkable example of the lacunose and T fragmented state of ancient evidence for many Greek myths. For while we hear virtually nothing about them in extant litera­ ture before the mid-fifth century, they are depicted in art starting in the late eighth! and are extremely popular, especially in Attica, from the first half of the sixth. Thus all we know about the Greeks' con­ ception of the Amazons in the archaic period comes from visual rep­ resentations, not from written sources, and it would be hazardous to assume that various 'facts' and details supplied by later writers were familiar to the sixth-century Greek. The problem of locating the Amazons is a good case in point. Most scholars assume that Herakles' battle with the Amazons, so popular on Attic vases, took place at the Amazon city Themiskyra in Asia Minor, on the river Thermodon near the Black Sea, where most ancient writers place it.2 But the earliest of these is Apollodoros (2.5.9), and, as I shall argue, alternate traditions locating the Ama­ zons elsewhere may have been known to the archaic vase-painter and viewer. An encounter with Amazons figures among the exploits of three important Greek heroes, and each story entered the Attic vase­ painters' repertoire at a different time in the course of the sixth century. First came Herakles' battle to obtain the girdle of Hippolyte (although the prize itself is never shown), his ninth labor.

    THE PEDIMENTALSCULPTURE OF THE HEPHAISTEION (PLATES 48-64) INTRODUCTION T HE TEMPLE of Hephaistos, although the best-preserved ancient building in Athens and the one most accessible to scholars, has kept its secrets longer than any other. It is barely ten years since general agreement was reached on the name of the presiding deity. Only in 1939 was the evidence discovered for the restora- tion of an interior colonnade whicli at once tremendously enriched our conception of the temple. Not until the appearance of Dinsmoor's study in 1941 did we have a firm basis for assessing either its relative or absolute chronology.' The most persistent major uncertainty about the temple has concerned its pedi- mental sculpture. "1 Delphi's business was international in scope: the sanctuary was involved in colonization, arbitration, and panhellenism.2 Yet one important aspect of Delphi's emergence as a panhellenic sanc­ tuary rarely studied is the impact of this extraordinary status on the community of Delphi and its surrounding region. In this paper I propose that, as the sanctuary of Delphi came to repre­ sent order, conciliation, and mediation to the Greeks, the local topography of the region was made to reflect these same themes. Delphi and Mt Parnassus became, through myth and ritual, a landscape in which tensions between wildness and civilization-a polarity at the heart of the culture of the polis­ could be narrated, enacted, and organized. Delphi and Parnas­ sus stood for the polarities from which the polis was construc­ ted. On the one side was Delphi, representing the triumph of order over chaos, as expressed in the myth of the sanctuary's foundation, when Apollo destroys Pytho and brings culture to the original inhabitants of Parnassus (Strab. 9.3.12).     The Ionic Friezes of the Hephaisteion in the Athenian Agora Katerina Velentza King’s College London Classical Archaeology Class of 2015 Abstract: This paper examines in depth all the features of the Ionic friezes of the Hephaisteion, their architectural position, their visibility, their iconography, their audience, their function and the intention of their construction. In contrast to the existing scholarship that examines separately single aspects of these architectural sculptures, in this research I have tried to investigate the Hephaisteion Ionic friezes as a whole and incorporate them in the ensemble of the other preserved Ionic friezes of fifth-century BC Attic Doric temples. My research started during the summer 2014 when I was working in the excavations of the Athenian Agora conducted by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. During this time I had the opportunity to familiarise myself in detail with the topography, the monuments of the site of the Agora and the excavation reports of the American School and carry out an autopsy in the Hephaisteion. Additionally, I was granted permission from the First Ephorate of Classical Antiquities, to enter the interior of the Parthenon in order to investigate in detail the architectural position and the visibility of the copies of the Ionic frieze still standing at the Western side of the temple. I also visited the temple of Poseidon at Sounion and the Archaeological Museum of Lavrion to examine the Ionic frieze surviving from this temple. Through the autopsy of these three temples and their Ionic friezes and after the detailed study of modern scholarship, I tried to understand and interpret the function and the purpose of the Ionic friezes within Athenian Doric temples as well as their broader cultural and historical context.

    HERAKLESAND THESEUS ON A RED-FIGURED LOUTERION (PLATES 105-110) PART I: THE VASE AND ITS SCENES RECONSTRUCTED Pr HE red-figured louterion published herein was found in a well in the Athenian Agora on May 5th, 1938, shattered in many fragments. Not enough is pre- served to reconstitute the entire shape physically, though there can be little doubt about the main elements of the reconstruction on paper shown in Figure 1. The same can be said about the painting on its two sides. There are large gaps, but again the main lines are clear and a drawing with restorations can be attempted (Fig. 2).' The paintings on the vase, which can be attributed to the group of Polygnotos,2 date the pot to the late forties or early thirties of the 5th century. In ancient art he is depicted as the ideal: courageous, controlled, noble, and good. Free, Greek men lived as the embodiment of kalos kagathos- the beautiful and virtuous. The elevation of the male form took on unique potency when defined in contrast to what it was not. Following the inception of democracy in the late 6th century and the Peloponnesian Wars in the 5th century, an oppositional worldview became a successful method of defining “Greekness.” Threats to the fledgling democracy in the form of the barbaric, foreign, grotesque, and feminine obtained resonance as oppositional forms of Greek self-definition. This exhibition explores how the “othering” of women within classical Greek society manifested in depictions of of mythologized man-killers and their victims. These varied representations simultaneously reveal both the Greek cultural ideal and the taboo. Representations of feminized monsters, manslayers, and militant women that exist outside the classical ideal highlight anxieties and discomforts the Greeks felt towards other ethnic groups, irregular performances of gender, and female disobedience. Representations of abnormal performances of gender and sexuality share a schema of iconography. Manslayers repeatedly adopt the characteristics of feminized monsters in literature and art. The victims of militant women and manslayers are frequently depicted collapsed backwards in similar poses of supplication and helplessness. To highlight the interwoven nature between monsters, manslayers, and militant women, this exhibition would be installed in one square room without dividers.
