Neal) The progressive country music movement developed in Austin, Texas, during the early 1970s as a community of liberal young musicians and concertgoers with strong interests in Texan country music traditions and contemporary rock music converged on the city. Children of the Cold War and the post-World War II migration to the suburbs, these “cosmic cowboys” sought to get back in touch with their rural roots and to leave behind the socially conservative world their parents had created for them. As a hybrid of country music and rock, progressive country music both encapsulated the contradictions of the cosmic cowboys in song and helped to create a musical sanctuary in which these youths could articulate their difference from mainstream Texan culture. Examining the work of the movement’s singer-songwriters (Michael Murphey, Guy Clark, Gary P. Nunn), western swing revivalists (Asleep at the Wheel, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys), and commercial country singers (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings), this dissertation explores the proliferation of stock imagery, landscape painting, and Texan stereotypes in progressive country music and their role in the construction of Austin’s difference.

Killen, Alabama, March 16, 1943 “David Briggs could play any style, and he had that soul influence coming from Muscle Shoals.” – Mac Gayden, Member of The Nashville Cats David Briggs began playing piano on R&B, pop, and country hits in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in his teens. After a brief stint as a pop singer, Briggs moved to Nashville in 1964 to focus on a career as a studio musician. The following year, Briggs backed Elvis Presley in the studio, an association that continued until Presley’s death. Briggs juggled instruments and genres through the decades, playing piano and organ on country hits by Charley Pride and Jerry Reed, by Alabama and Reba McEntire, and by Kenny Chesney and Shania Twain. On the rock side, Briggs recording with by Eric Andersen, Joan Baez, Beau Brummels, J.J. Cale, the Monkees, and Bob Seger. The keyboardist was a member of the acclaimed band Area Code 615, made up of Nashville studio pros. In 1969, Briggs and bassist-producer Norbert Putnam opened Quadrafonic Sound Studios in Nashville, and the studio became a favorite of visitors from New York, Los Angeles, and other music centers. Briggs also has been an arranger, producer, a songwriter, and a music publisher (including the Academy Award-winning song “Up Where We Belong” and the Steve Winwood hit “Higher Love.”) Kenny Buttrey b. Multi-instrumentiste et chanteur Country, il est né le 28 mars 1941 à Oak Hill en Virginie. Né Charles Ray McCoy, sa famille s'installe à proximité de Fayetteville quand il était un jeune garçon, puis à Miami, en Floride. Charlie McCoy s'installe à Nashville en 1959 et fait ses débuts en tant que batteur pour Stonewall Jackson. Rapidement il opte pour une carrière de musicien de studio et choisit un domaine peu exploré, l'harmonica, dont il devient l'un des maîtres incontesté bien que pratiquant également la guitare, l'orgue et la basse. A huit ans, il voit une annonce dans une bande dessinée qui fait la promotion de l’harmonica : " Vous pouvez jouer en sept jours, à défaut vous serez remboursé ’’. Il achète l’instrument pour 50 cents et la même année fait l’acquisition d’une guitare.     BURKHART, THAD A., M.A. 1970’s Southern Rock and W.J. Cash’s Hell uva Fella. (2007) Directed by Dr. Scott Romine. 72 pp. 1970’s American Southern Rock was a musical phenomenon as unique, diverse, and dynamic as the politically and racially tumultuous region from which it hailed. This region has been portrayed in popular culture via a male stereotype that almost seventy years ago Southern ethnographer W.J. Cash dubbed the “hell of a fellow [hell uva fella].”Even in the post-bellum South of the late Civil Rights Era, the values of the ruggedly individualistic frontiersman survived and developed into a unique concept of regional masculinity. The Southern man portrayed in 1970’s Southern Rock is a unique, regionalized aggregate of the American South’s cultural heritage, its dynamic values in the 1970s, and the incorporation of characteristics found in Cash’s decades older hell uva fella tradition, all of which embody an individualism that is both personally and politically self-destructive. 1970’s SOUTHERN ROCK AND W.J.
