ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 School of Sciences and Mathematics Annual Report 2014‐2015 Executive Summary The 2014 – 2015 academic year was a very successful one for the School of Sciences and Mathematics (SSM). Our faculty continued their stellar record of publication and securing extramural funding, and we were able to significantly advance several capital projects. In addition, the number of majors in SSM remained very high and we continued to provide research experiences for a significant number of our students. We welcomed four new faculty members to our ranks. These individuals and their colleagues published 187 papers in peer‐reviewed scientific journals, many with undergraduate co‐authors. Faculty also secured $6.4M in new extramural grant awards to go with the $24.8M of continuing awards. During the 2013‐14 AY, ground was broken for two 3,000 sq. ft. field stations at Dixie Plantation, with construction slated for completion in Fall 2014. These stations were ultimately competed in June 2015, and will begin to serve students for the Fall 2015 semester. The 2014‐2015 academic year, marked the first year of residence of Computer Science faculty, as well as some Biology and Physics faculty, in Harbor Walk. In addition, nine Biology faculty had offices and/or research space at SCRA, and some biology instruction occurred at MUSC. In general, the displacement of a large number of students to Harbor Walk went very smoothly. Temporary astronomy viewing space was secured on the roof of one of the College’s garages. The SSM dean’s office expended tremendous effort this year to secure a contract for completion of the Rita Hollings Science Center renovation, with no success to date. -

Nashville recording artist Buck Ford is a young, pure country singing sensation that focuses on keeping the traditional country sound and rhythm flowing. Bucks influences consist of George Strait, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Keith Whiteley, just to name a few. Buck and his band pride themselves on the fact that their performances “bring back to life” the sound and feel of real old country music. Biography Buck began his story as a professional motocross racer, riding the circuit for over a decade. He received a full ride endorsement with a Honda team through the West Coast Super Cross Series in 2009. He placed his riding career on hold to pursue his love and passion for country music. Despite his dedication and talent in the professional motocross scene, his heart has always been in country music. His performances include his own written and composed music and covers songs from greats such as the likes of George Strait, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Keith Whitley, Craig Morgan, Wade Hayes, Mark Chesnutt, Tracy Lawrence, Chris Young, Billy Currington, Hank Jr., Brooks and Dunn, Alan Jackson, Waylon Jennings, Garth Brooks and many more. Buck has been successfully playing for over 7 years, and played with other fine musicians, such as The Time Jumpers, Vince Gill, Dawn Sears, Wade Hayes, James Mitchell, Mike Johnson, Brent Mason, Paul Franklin, Kevin Grant, Lonnie Wilson, Larry Franklin, and many other talented musicians throughout the West Coast, South West and Nashville regions. Buck has performed at fairs, festivals, rodeos, clubs, many private events, weddings, and parties. -

We are so glad you have joined us to celebrate the power of music to make social change. Each of the first three SONGS OF PROTEST events, starting in April of 2017, was presented to sold-out audiences in our Rockland, NY community. This latest concert, was supposed to have taken place in-person on April 6th, 2020. We had the performer lineup and songs already chosen when we had to halt the entire season due to the pandemic. As in SONGS OF PROTEST 1, 2 & 3, we had planned to present an evening filled with amazing performers and powerful songs that have had a historical impact on social justice. When we decided to resume the series virtually, we rethought the concept. With so much going on in our country and the world, we offered the performers the opportunity to write or present an original work about an issue from our current state of affairs. -

BIO Lacy J. Dalton (born Jill Lynne Byrem) on October 13, 1946 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, is an American country singer and songwriter. A career that has spanned many decades and touched the hearts of millions of music fans. In March 2017 Lacy J Dalton was inducted into the North American Country Music Association International Hall of Fame. She’s one of the most instantly recognizable voices in music – the woman People Magazine called “Country’s Bonnie Raitt”. From the first time Lacy J Dalton caught the public’s ear, that soulful delivery, full of texture and grit, has been a mainstay of Country Music. When you sit to listen to a Lacy J Dalton album, you find yourself pulled in by the very power and heart of this vocalist, because she’s not merely performing a ten-song set, she’s bringing each and every tune to life. It’s as if they were all written especially for her. Prior to signing with Harbor Records in 1978 as Jill Croston, she like many before her, held many jobs to survive and support her family. As a truck stop waitress and singer, she would wait tables and then jump on stage to sing a few songs. Her hard work and dedication paid off in 1979 when she was awarded the Academy of Country Music “Top New Female Vocalist of the Year”. Then in 1980 Lacy J Dalton was signed by Columbia Records and quickly rose to national prominence with "Crazy Blue Eyes", written together with her longest friend, Mary McFadden, a song that raced to #7 on the Billboard Country Charts. -

ISSN 2513-8537 DOI: 10.13140/RG.2.2.15941.04327 Bob Dylan: Nobility, Lyrics and Ghosts David Kane Introduction The news that Bob Dylan had been awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize for literature prompted a healthy response. Comments ranged from the congratulatory to the critical, the latter, while acknowledging Dylan’s talent, argued that his work could not be considered as literature. The former stoutly defended the Nobel committee’s decision, often citing the importance of Dylan in personal biographies and championing his right to be acknowledged as a poet. The award and subsequent debate have resonance with a number of topics that deserve further consideration. In the following, I examine Dylan’s unique status in the history of rock that often focuses on his songwriting, particularly his lyrics, and the manner in which he in- fluenced other musicians. I also consider how responses to Dylan’s Nobel can be construed as illustrating the gap that continues to exist between the supposed high cultural value of literature and the low value of rock music. Further, I explore how continued acknowledgement of Dylan’s work can be viewed as affirming a rock ‘golden age’ that peaked in the 1960s and which, for some commentators, results in contemporary replication of the past that acts to hold back innovation. This is most noticeable in the concept of hauntology, which, in this context, promotes a desire to resurrect a time in which music really mattered. These musings are interspersed with my personal experience of Dylan’s music that while ren- dering me unqualified to hold an objective view, enable an understanding of the polar posi- tions often taken in any discussion of Dylan and his work and his ability to delight, dismay, enthrall and frustrate in equal measure. -
