The film served as a pilot for the television series XIII. Her assassin narrowly escapes after a shoot out involving a shadowy figure named La Mangouste Val Kilmer or "The Mongoose". Three months later in West Virginiaan elderly couple discover a young man Stephen Dorff who lies wounded above on a tree in a parachute. He cannot remember his past and the only clue to his identity is a numerical tattoo on his chest, "XIII", the Roman numeral for XIII: The Bait, in the White House XIII: The Bait, a joint intelligence task force led by Colonel Amos Greg Bryk is frantically conducting the search for the President's killer. With the presidential elections just weeks away, a confirmed suspect could swing the vote for the incumbent administration. Regaining his health, XIII searches for more information about the imprint on his body using the couple's home computer. This leads to his location being picked up by the NSA and in no time at all a squad of elite XIII: The Bait forces swarm the couple's house in Cape Fear. XIII takes out the soldiers one by one. While on the run in New Yorkhe befriends Sam Caterina Murinoa photo shop owner who helps identify for him a woman in a photo he carries. Here he attempts to access a memory card found on his person in the hopes of discovering his identity and unknowingly initiates its tracking program. As a result, rogue Secret Service agents track him down at the woman's abandoned apartment, but he fights them off and escapes back to his place where La Mangouste XIII: The Bait him. XIII later awakens to find himself restrained inside a truck where La Mangouste demands to know who he has spoken to. Escaping out of his hands XIII returns to Sam where she informs him that the design on his chest refers back to the ancient Roman Empire wherein secret societies would brand members loyal to their cause. She then gives him some photos that Kim Jessalyn Gilsigthe woman in the photo, had developed there, XIII: The Bait convinces him to head upstate to Kellownee Valley. Meanwhile, government intelligence has identified XIII from video surveillance as Steven Rowland and plasters his face all over the media to weed him out. He learns that he was a former special ops agent who underwent facial reconstruction surgery and placed undercover assuming Rowland's identity. The goal of his assignment was to flush out a group of fascists plotting a coup to overthrow the American government whom Rowland had unwittingly been recruited for. Ensconced within the highest echelons of power, the conspirators run their own security agency alongside the government's. During this time, Amos and his agents have the house surrounded and move in along with La Mangouste who fires at XIII, but misses and XIII: The Bait Kim instead. The only XIII: The Bait now for XIII to get his own life back is to play bait, which is a dangerous game now since he still doesn't know who he really is. A televised presidential debate is interrupted to broadcast that XIII has been captured. Amos has XIII wired up and tortured in XIII: The Bait to extract a confession out of him, but his pleas that he is not really Rowland are met with incredulity. He is taken back to his holding cell and while there it is discovered from his X-rays that he has had reconstructive surgery and that XIII: The Bait military file XIII: The Bait classified. Inside his cell he meets another member of the conspiracy, "XIV", who attempts to silence him once and for all, but he escapes with the help of Jones. He shows him photos of XIII: The Bait wife and daughter whom he lost in the sarin gas attacks in Chicagowhich was one reason he originally accepted the mission. Carrington also reveals to him that Col. Jack McCall Scott Wickware had previously supervised the paramilitary unit Rowland was involved with that orchestrated the foreign attacks at home and abroad in HadithaIraq and that he had believed that the next major target of attack would coincide with the upcoming elections. He attempts to determine the location of the attack, but McCall commits suicide. Back at the safehouse, he and Jones evaluate the evidence, which points to a nuclear strike on election day at a Maryland polling station and inform Carrington, who gets into a heated exchange with Amos, after he accuses him of involvement in the cover up. Simultaneously, Wax observes Amos and Carrington together, and orchestrates Carrington's arrest on suspicion of high treason. Jones mentions that Sheridan's plan to scale down America's presence in Iraq and cut billions from XIII: The Bait defense budget would be bad for Winthrow's business. He gets into a fight with La Mangouste and kills him. Back at the safehouse, XIII identifies the people who he saw at the meeting and tells Jones he overheard them make an enigmatic reference to the location that pinpoints the target as BethesdaMaryland. Together they organize to thwart the plot. Wally Sheridan, the assassinated President's brother, wins the national elections. It was an upbeat and celebratory forum, a departure from the years when the left met to bemoan its losses. This year, the talk turned to predictions of further advances for socialism and an end to neoliberal policies on the continent. "Now we are in a different moment," said Medardo Gonzalez, host of the event. "We are in position to move to the defeat of neoliberalism and not only to defeat it but to go beyond it and construct a new alternative model in Latin America and the Caribbean." Gonzalez is coordinator general of El Salvador's leftist party Farabundo Marti para la Liberacion Nacional (FMLN).

  • 4 Cognitive Approaches to Comics Shots – and Conveys a Sense of Continuity in the Scene
4 Cognitive Approaches to Comics 4.1 Synopsis In part 1 I used the term ‘synopsis’ to refer to Wolfgang Iser’s notion that readers generate meaning by ‘seeing things together’, which is guided by tex- tual structures that activate previous themes or gestalten that have become part of the horizon. I developed this idea further by adding conceptual integration theory in part 3, which elaborates on the possible mappings between spaces. Gilles Fauconnier and Mark Turner identify at least fifteen vital relations (cf. 2003: 101) that become compressed in the blend. In both cases ‘synopsis’ is a metaphor for cognitive operations that are happening in front of the mind’s eye. If we now turn to the architecture of a typical comics page, we find a conceptual illustration and materialisation of this reading model: the fragmented pieces of the narrative – the panels – are separated from each other by a blank space in between – the gutter – that requires readers to cognitively bridge the gulf. Even without any knowledge of gestalt psychology or blending, all comics scholars are challenged to explain how readers are supposed to make sense of this “mosaic art” (Nodelman 2012: 438). As a visualisation of an otherwise cognitive process the medium’s layout also illustrates Iser’s theme and horizon structure, in the sense that the panel(s) attended to by the readers form the present theme and the others around it the horizon. As the ‘wandering viewpoint’ of readers moves on to the next panel, the previous one becomes part of the background: the “theme of one moment becomes the horizon against which the next segment takes on its actuality” (1980: 198; see also Dewey 2005: 199, 211).
