Since war begins in the minds of men [sic], it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed. - UNESCO Founding Constitution Violence and war have deep and longstanding roots in the belief systems and cultures of many societies in this world. The 20th century has demonstrated that war, rather than diminishing in the light of the possibility of worldwide nuclear destruction, has changed in nature and in scope. Four significant factors in particular point toward the need for peace education in our schools today: 1. The increasing role of intercultural strife as a source of conflict: Current conflicts tend to divide people along ethnic, cultural and religious lines. This indicates the need for education to eliminate prejudice and to promote understanding and dialogue between diverse cultures, ethnic groups and religions. 2. Increasing numbers of intra-state conflicts, particularly in developing countries: Since the end of the Cold War, the majority of armed conflicts have been regional or intra-state conflicts. These conflicts often destroy limited resources and infrastructure, and undermine fragile social cohesion. This indicates the need for education in all countries of the world regarding the relationship between poverty, militarism, and the persistent residual effects of war. 3. More intense involvement of civilians, including children, as victims and participants in acts of violence: Modern warfare and weaponry have increased the scope and impact of war zones, involving greater numbers of civilians and children in armed conflict. Children have been recruited as soldiers through the use of propaganda and intimidation. Episodes of civilian violence and terrorism have become more varied and intense. Acts of violence are less restricted to the military and have become a more widespread phenomenon. These trends clearly point out the need for peace education as a means of overcoming learned violent behaviour, and of counteracting hatred, fear and propaganda. 4. Increased global circulation of images of violence and war through mass media: The repeated dissemination of images of violence and war has a

Vår kunnskap om den mellomliggende perioden og røttene til fredsdiplomatiet er mer mangelfull. Artikkelen sammenfatter det vi vet, og den presenterer en tidligere ukjent case fra 1966–1968, det såkalte Nobel-initiativet, der en gruppe norske borgere gikk sammen om å mobilisere nobelprisvinnere med sikte på å etablere en bakkanal for fredssamtaler mel- lom USA og Nord-Vietnam. Samfunnsinitiativet fikk helhjertet oppslutning fra den norske stat. Nobel-initiativet er dermed en forløper for det samarbeidet mellom stat og samfunn som skulle prege norsk freds- og forsoningsdiplomati. Gitt at vi også finner løse forelegg for freds- og forsoningsdiplomati i 1920- årene, gjør kunnskapen om Nobel-initiativet det mulig å påstå at vi gjennom det siste hundreåret konsistent finner norsk freds- og foroningsdiplomati i den utstrekning og den form som de internasjonale forholdene tillater.     African Mission Annual Report 2018-2019 1 The Aim of African Mission is “To fight disease and poverty in Africa by supporting educational & medical projects”. Background: African Mission was started in 2003 to support the work of Dr Ray Towey MB ChB FRCA. Dr Towey left his post as a Consultant Anaesthetist in Guys Hospital, London to work in Africa and since 1993 has dedicated his life to the improvement of health care for the poor in Africa. He has worked as an Anaesthetist in rural hospitals in Nigeria and Tanzania and since 2002 in St Mary’s Hospital, Gulu, Uganda. Dr. Towey has been in Uganda for 17 years and has been involved in the training of anaesthetic officers, nurses, and medical students over that time. He is now a part time volunteer and is focusing in the development of the intensive care ward, measuring the outcomes of specific diseases amenable to intensive care in rural Africa, sustaining the equipment for respiratory support, working to improve intensive care nursing and researching the data to indicate the effectiveness and sustainability of appropriate inexpensive intensive care in rural sub-Saharan Africa. In July 2009 following a visit to Zimbabwe by Nannette & Dr Towey, African Mission decided to expand its work to include supporting projects based in Zimbabwe. The main Zimbabwean project supported is Fatima Mission. Fatima Mission is a very large mission (600 sq miles in size) based in rural Zimbabwe, approximately 130 miles north of Bulawayo and a similar distance south of Victoria Falls. Practically everyone living within Fatima Mission’s boundaries are poor subsistence farmers.

Abstract In this ethnographic study of the dynamic lives of a population of monuments in Ottawa, I argue that long after they have been unveiled, monuments are imbued with many capacities to act. Monuments inspire loathing or affection, and settle or disturb dominant understandings of place, nation, race, and gender. I suggest that monuments have these affective capabilities because they operate like ‘stone bodies’ in their urban environments. Additionally, spirited with a certain life-force, monuments have the ability to haunt, unsettling relationships between place, memory, and belonging. These affective charges of monuments are felt and expressed through articulations of imperial and colonial nostalgia, feminist and other activist mobilities and various articulations of patriotism.
