For more information, please contact us at [email protected] or visit our website at www.contemporarysee.org Introduction: Gender and Geopolitics in the Eurovision Song Contest Catherine Baker* Introduction From the vantage point of the early 1990s, when the end of the Cold War not only inspired the discourses of many Eurovision performances but created opportunities for the map of Eurovision participation itself to significantly expand in a short space of time, neither the scale of the contemporary Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) nor the extent to which a field of “Eurovision research” has developed in cultural studies and its related disciplines would have been recognisable. In 1993, when former Warsaw Pact states began to participate in Eurovision for the first time and Yugoslav successor states started to compete in their own right, the contest remained a one-night-per- year theatrical presentation staged in venues that accommodated, at most, a couple of thousand spectators and with points awarded by expert juries from each participating country. Between 1998 and 2004, Eurovision’s organisers, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and the national broadcasters responsible for hosting each edition of the contest expanded it into an ever grander spectacle: hosted in arenas before live audiences of 10,000 or more, with (from 2004) a semi-final system enabling every eligible country and broadcaster to participate each year, and with (between 1998 and 2008) points awarded almost entirely on the basis of telephone voting by audiences in each participating state.

Prologo Primo C’era Una volta...ovvero le favole non esistono C'era una volta….Così cominciava l’ultima versione di que- sto libro, che ha avuto una gestazione curiosa, partecipe sia della favola che della realtà. L’aspetto favolistico era rappresentato dalla promessa, più volte fattami, direttamente, in privato ed in pubblico, di una bene- ficenza “letteraria”; il promittente si era impegnato, ed aveva impegnato me, che avevo impegnato tanti altri, a sostenere il costo del libro. Pensate, aveva detto che sarebbe stata una cosa in grande..parlando, addirittura, di migliaia di copie! Mi sentivo inondato di pagine e di invidia. Non rideteci tanto, ma alcuni individui, avendo appresa la notizia della futura elargizione, mi invidiavano già! Allora è vero che l’invidia alligna facilmente, anche sulle semplici promesse! La ricchezza non ci sarebbe stata, lo sapevo e lo so; il benes- sere nemmeno, ma il libro sarebbe stato regalato a migliaia di persone,consentendo, in conseguenza, di far conoscere un picco- lissimo spicchio del mondo francescano da me conosciuto. Voi sapete bene che nelle favole esistono, paradigma della vita, degli ostacoli da superare, dei mali, spesso; anche in questo caso, si verificò un primo incidente di percorso: il libro non sarebbe stato pubblicato più ad Agosto, per la festa del Perdono, ma..a Natale, come strenna; gradita o meno che fosse (a caval donato non si guarda.. in bocca!). Nel frattempo, proprio per essere anticipatamente ricono- scente nei confronti di chi aveva promesso cosi tanto (dando, tut- tavia, fino ad allora, nulla), e per trovargli spazio, (i limiti della 7 nostra libertà!) avevo deciso di raccontare meno della mia vita e più di lui.

Armenian-Chinese high-level negotiations take place in Beijing China's President Xi Jinping prom- ised more economic and military assis- tance to Armenia on March 25 during talks with his visiting Armenian coun- terpart President Serzh Sargsyan which the two men said will give "new impe- tus" to growing ties between their nations. Serzh Sargsyan, for his part, voiced support for Beijing's long-running efforts to regain control over Taiwan and spoke out against any foreign inter- ference in China's internal affairs "under the guise of human rights protec- tion." In a 5-page joint declaration released after their talks in Beijing, Xi and Sargsyan noted "mutual under- standing on issues relating to pivotal interests and concerns of the two coun- tries."
