FLORIDA ATlANTIC UNIVERSI1Y COMMENCEMENT CONVOCATION HALF PAST NINE O'CLOCK WEDNESDAY MORNING DECEMBER NINETEENTH NINETEEN IllJNDRED NINETY FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY Florida Atlantic University, a member of the State University of Florida, was established in 1961 and opened its doors to students in 1964. In addition to its 850-acre campus in Boca Raton, FAU campuses are located in Broward County in Fort Lauderdale and Davie, and in North Palm Beach County in Palm Beach Gardens. Its colleges - Arts and Humanities, Business, Education, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Science, Social Science and Urban and Public Affairs, and the School of Nursing- offer 56 bachelor's, 42 master's, 4 specialist's, and 12 doctoral degrees. As of August 1990, the University has awarded 46,301 degrees and has served more than 165,000 different individuals through its instructional programs. In December 1967, Florida Atlantic University was elected to regular membership in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, at which time the Commission on Higher Education of that Association granted full accreditation to all of the University's programs, In accordance with Association regulations, this accreditation has been reaffirmed in 1973 and again in 1983. In the fall of 1990, the University had 13,000 students and 750 faculty members. ANTHONY JAMES CATANESE Dr. Anthony James Catanese joined Florida Atlantic University as the University's fourth President in January 1990. Prior to his appointment, he was Dean of the College of Architecture at the University of Florida in Gainesville where he spearheaded fund raising programs that yielded millions of dollars in gifts, endowed chairs and professor ships, equipment and real estate gifts. Under his leadership, he established Florida's first Ph.D. degree programs in architecture and directed the development of refined academic programs with highly selective admissions requirements. Prior to his accomplishments at the University of Florida, Dr. Catanese's academic and administrative skills were utilized in university settings at the Pratt Institute in New York City where he was Provost and Professor of Architecture; at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he served as Dean and Professor of Architecture and Urban Planning; at the University of Miami where he was the James A. Ryder Professor of Transportation and Planning and Associate Dean for the School of Engineering and Environmental Design; and at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta where he was a Research Professor and Director of the Center for Planning and Development. Dr. Catanese received his Bachelor's Degree in city and regional planning from Rutgers University in 1963, his Master of Urban Planning Degree from New York University in 1966, and his Ph.D. degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1969. Active in community and governmental affairs, Dr. Catanese was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the National Urban Policy Task Force, served as Chairman of the Milwaukee City Plan Board, and Chairman of the Gainesville City Plan Board. Dr. Catanese also was president of the Park West Development Corporation, a not-for-profit group that planned and developed a major area in Milwaukee. He currently is a member of the Board of Florida's Environmental Education Foundation. A prolific writer, Dr. Catanese has authored 11 books, 18 chapters in books, and more than 65 articles in journals, and 35 research monographs. Two of his books, Planners and Politics: Impossible Dreams and Urban Planning, have been best sellers in their fields. In his first year as President of Florida Atlantic University, Dr. Catanese has coupled his boundless enthusiasm and energy with his strong leadership skills to begin his mission of carrying out the University's renewed commitment to academic excellence and quality growth. 2 HONORARY DEGREE Patricia Aburdene Patricia Aburdene is an internationally recognized speaker and best-selling author. With John Naisbitt, she co-authored the best selling Megatrends 2000 and Re-inventing the Corporation and was Mr. Naisbitt's collaborator on the publishing phenomenon Megatrends. Ms. Aburdene has lectured throughout the U.S., Canada, Scandinavia, Australia, and in France, the Netherlands and the Pacific Rim on the impact on social and economic change on business and society, the future of the corporation, and the leadership style of the new information economy. Recent clients include AT&T, IBM Corporation, Exxon and Apple Computer. Ms. Aburdene holds a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy from Newton College of the Sacred Heart and a master's degree in library science from Catholic University of America. She serves on two organizations engaged in social transformation including Washington, D.C.-based Search for Common Ground and Colorado's Telluride Institute.
