Early on, Winston Churchill secured from President Roosevelt an agreement that the Allies would put their main effort into defeating Germany first, and then they would together turn their attention to the Pacific. This “Europe First” policy was not an easy one for Roosevelt to sell to the military, considering it was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor which had forced America into the war. It was especially difficult for the United States Navy to deal with this policy. The US Navy considered the Pacific to be their war and, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, this is easy to understand. -

Knopf 2004 Reviewed by Dick McGowan Shadow Divers may be the perfect book for history buffs. The book recounts the discovery of a German submarine sunk off the coast of New Jersey. But the boat appears in no military record and its identity is unknown. John Chatterton and Richie Kohler, weekend scuba divers, explore the wreck in 230 feet of water, attempting to find the artifact that would garner an identity for U-Who. Shadow Divers is worth reading if for no other reason than to understand deepwater diving-and its dangers. Yet Kurson knows what good fiction writers know: character drives the plot, even a plot, or story, as wildly improbable as the book chronicles. -

Bill’s Cave Diving Lexicon 120 Rule: Noticing from the Navy NDL table that, for certain depths, depth + bottom time = 120 so that the NDL can be determined by subtracting the depth from 120. 200 DIN: Thread depth in a DIN valve and associated pressure (200 BAR) that can be handled. This size (7 threads) allows for a DIN to yoke conversion. 300 DIN: Thread depth in a DIN valve that provides the most secure (9 threads) connection and can withstand 300 BAR pressure. 5 nines pure: 99.999% pure, as in a gas. 50-50: Gas mix of 50% oxygen and 50% nitrogen used for decompression gas. 6351-T6 Aluminum Alloy: Alloy that has had problems with tank ruptures. Absolute Pressure: Total pressure being exerted on a diver At sea level Absolute pressure is 1 ATA and it increases by 1 ATA for each 33fsw (34ffw). ADDD (Air, Duration, Depth, Distance): Limits for dive termination acronym minimum Air volume/pressure, maximum Duration of dive, maximum Depth of dive, and maximum Distance of penetration. ADV (Automatic Deflation Valve, and Automatic Diluent Valve ): Device on a buoyancy compensator that allows for rapid air purging, and device on a rebreather that dilutes the breathing mix. AGE (Arterial Gas Embolism): A lung expansion injury. A condition in which gas bubbles enter the arterial system and cause damage by blocking blood flow to vital organs, most commonly the brain. This is generally caused by air passing through the walls of the alveoli into the bloodstream. Air: A gas mixture of Oxygen (21%), Nitrogen (78%), and other gasses (1%, Helium, Argon, etc.). -

Designed to approach its victims from below the surface, attack and then creep away, it relied on stealth both to do its job and to survive. The possibility of being attacked by a U-boat nearly anywhere, anytime, was very real. Countermeasures developed by the Allies vastly reduced its effectiveness as a weapon, and by the second half of the war, these undersea hunters had become the hunted. Of the approximately 800 operational German U-boats that ventured out into the world’s oceans, roughly three quarters never returned from their final voyages. These losses were due to several factors: the efforts of Allied Anti-Submarine Warfare Forces (ASW), mechanical failure, human error, or extreme weather. When a U-boat sank, for any reason, it often took its identity to the bottom along with it, and created a mystery that would, at times, be solved haphazardly by post-war assessors and historians.
