Julie Andrews originated the role of Eliza on Broadway in 1956. The movie version of the tale, featuring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison, won Oscars for best picture, best director, best actor, and five others, and is considered by many critics to be one of the all-time best movie musicals. In contrast) the Bast European yeshivo! had only one educational goal: the production of gedolei yisraeL. Secular study was banned from the yeshiva curriculum because nothing short of total immersion in Torah study would produce gedolei yisraeL. The gedolim in Eastern Europe were well aware that heavy casualties would result from this single-minded approach to Jewish education.     Lessons from Maharam Banet’s Clash With the Ḥatam Sofer Over Copyright in the Roedelheim Maḥzor * David Nimmer Roedelheim, on the outskirts of Frankfurt, was a well-known seat of Jewish printing. A famous prayer book, published there in 1800, gave rise to controversy between two famous rabbis of the early nineteenth century. At stake in the dispute were divergent views about copyright protection. Copyright law looms large today as a subject of academic examination.
