Gerber This dissertation is a biographical study of Moses Hayim Luzzatto (1707–1746 or 1747). It presents the social and religious context in which Luzzatto was variously celebrated as the leader of a kabbalistic-messianic confraternity in Padua, condemned as a deviant threat by rabbis in Venice and central and eastern Europe, and accepted by the Portuguese Jewish community after relocating to Amsterdam. -

1 Oneg! A collection of fascinating material on the weekly parsha! Rabbi Elchanan Shoff Parshas TOLDOS Avraham begat Yitzchak (Gen. 25:19). The Or Hachaim and R. Shlomo Kluger (Chochmas Hatorah, Toldos p. 3) explain that it was in Avraham’s merit that G-d accepted Yitzchak’s prayers and granted him offspring. Rashi (to Gen. 15:15, 25:30) explains that G-d had Avraham die five years earlier than he otherwise should have in order that Avraham would not see Yitzchak’s son Esau stray from the proper path. I saw in the name of R. Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld (Chochmas Chaim to Toldos) that if Yitzchak had not campaigned vigorously in prayer to father a child, G-d would have granted him children anyways after five years. So in which merit did Yitzchak father his children, in Avraham’s merit or in the merit of his own prayers? Both are true: It was only in Avraham’s merit that Yitzchak deserved to father Yaakov and Esau, but the fact that the twins were born earlier rather than later came in merit of Yitzchak’s prayers. R. Sonnenfeld adds that the Torah’s expression equals in Gematria the (748 = ויעתר לו י-ה-ו-ה) that denotes G-d heeding Yitzchak’s prayers .The above sefer records that when a grandson of R .)748 = חמש שנים) phrase five years Sonnenfeld shared this Gematria with R. Aharon Kotler, he was so taken aback that he exclaimed, “I am certain that this Gematria was revealed through Ruach HaKodesh!” Yitzchak was forty years old when he took Rivkah—the daughter of Besuel the Aramite from Padan Aram, the sister of Laban the Aramite—as a wife (Gen. -
My Aunt's Mamilla
My father’s eldest sister has always served in My Aunt’s Mamilla my mind as a potential family encyclopedia. Helga Tawil-Souri “Potential” because I never had the opportunity to spend much time with her. She had come and visited us in Beirut once in the mid 1970s – I vaguely remember. My grandmother, with whom I spent much of my childhood, would often mention Auntie M. under a nostalgic haze, perhaps regret, that her first-born was so far away. That longing tone for her eldest led my other aunts, my father, and my uncles to joke that Auntie M. was their mother’s favorite. For years Auntie M. endured only in my imagination. Whatever tidbits I had caught about her were extraordinary, a fusion of new world mystery and old world obscurity. She lived in faraway places that sounded utterly exotic: Sao Paolo, Etobicoke, Toronto; that they always rhymed only added to their enigma. The haphazard trail I constructed of her life seemed improbable too: old enough to remember family life in Jerusalem; married and sent off to Brazil; had a daughter ten years older than me who didn’t speak Arabic. Auntie M. hovered behind a veil of unanswered questions: How old was she? Did my grandparents marry her off or did she choose to wed Uncle A.? How is one “sent” to Brazil? Could one even fly to Brazil back then? Did she flee with the family to Lebanon first? Did she really have another daughter besides the one I knew of? What happened to the other daughter? 1 The Unknown Freud Talk given by Robert L. Lippman to the Humanist Society of Metro Louisville on May 4, 2017. This evening I am going to present a picture of Sigmund Freud --one radically different from the various portrayals of the father of psychoanalysis you may have read or heard. In his 1958 essay, "Psychoanalysis--Science or Party Line?," Erich Fromm asserts: unconsciously [Sigmund Freud] ... wanted to be ... one of the great cultural-ethical leaders of the twentieth century. He wanted to conquer the world ... and to lead man to the only--and very limited--salvation he was capable of: the conquest of passion by intellect. To Freud, this--not any religion or any political solution like socialism--was the only valid answer to the problem of man. [In Fromm, E. (1963). The Dogma of Christ; New York: Holt, Rhinehart and Winston] Freud, however, eludes Fromm. The following paraphrase conveys my radically different reading of Freud: 2 consciously [not unconsciously].Freud ] wanted to conquer the world and to lead man to the only--and very limited--salvation he was capable of: the conquest of passion by intellect. To Freud, this was the only valid answer to the Jewish problem. In other words, Freud, like the founder of modern Zionism Theodor Herzl, was bent on delivering his people from anti-Semitism—but unlike Herzl, Freud did not broadcast his messianic ambition. Whereas Herzl's Promised Land was a sovereign Jewish State [realized: Israel], Freud’s Promised Land was an enlightened secular world grounded in reason, a brotherly world in which the seed of Abraham can move freely over frontiers. -

A Bridge across the Tigris: Chief Rabbi Joseph Herman Hertz Our Rabbis tell us that on the death of Abaye the bridge across the Tigris collapsed. A bridge serves to unite opposite shores; and so Abaye had united the opposing groups and conflicting parties of his time. Likewise Dr. Hertz’s personality was the bridge which served to unite different communities and bodies in this country and the Dominions into one common Jewish loyalty. —Dayan Yechezkel Abramsky: Eulogy for Chief Rabbi Hertz.[1] I At his death in 1946, Joseph Herman Hertz was the most celebrated rabbi in the world. He had been Chief Rabbi of the British Empire for 33 years, author or editor of several successful books, and champion of Jewish causes national and international. Even today, his edition of the Pentateuch, known as the Hertz Chumash, can be found in most centrist Orthodox synagogues, though it is often now outnumbered by other editions. His remarkable career grew out of three factors: a unique personality and capabilities; a particular background and education; and extraordinary times. Hertz was no superman; he had plenty of flaws and failings, but he made a massive contribution to Judaism and the Jewish People. Above all, Dayan Abramsky was right. Hertz was a bridge, who showed that a combination of old and new, tradition and modernity, Torah and worldly wisdom could generate a vibrant, authentic and enduring Judaism. Hertz was born in Rubrin, in what is now Slovakia on September 25, 1872.[2] His father, Simon, had studied with Rabbi Esriel Hisldesheimer at his seminary at Eisenstadt and was a teacher and grammarian as well as a plum farmer. -

By GREER FAY CASHMAN 29/11/2012 The fact that 'The Jerusalem Post' is still going strong after 80 years is a tribute to his vision, especially because it is an English-language paper in a mostly Hebrew- speaking country. Photo by: Jerusalem Post Archives Tomorrow, December 1, marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of The Jerusalem Post by Gershon Agron, who later went on to become the mayor of Jerusalem. Beit Agron, on the capital’s Hillel Street, was named for him, as was nearby Agron Street. Beit Agron was once the hub of journalism, housing the Government Press Office, a branch of the Army Spokesman’s Office, bureaus of numerous foreign media agencies and outlets and the Jerusalem Journalists’ Association. It used to have a restaurant and bar where local and foreign journalists rubbed shoulders and traded stories, and there was always an aura of anticipation and excitement. But then things changed. As print media started to go downhill, many major newspapers began cutting down on their foreign bureaus and began relying more on wire services or a feed from some local source, which was not quite the same as getting the perspective of their own representative who had a special rapport with his or her editor. Those media outlets that remained either chose to work out of Jerusalem Capital Studios or moved their offices to Malha, the new Mecca of the media. The GPO recently followed suit. In 2009, Dion Nissenbaum, the McClatchy bureau chief in Kabul, writing in his agency’s Checkpoint Jerusalem blog, recalled that at one time, “the fourth floor of Beit Agron was coveted real estate. -

Blogging Rav Lichtenstein INTRODUCTION AND INVITATION This past Rosh Chodesh Iyyar, the world of Torah and avodat Hashem lost a giant, mori ve-rabi R. Aharon I in ,ואני בעניי ,Lichtenstein. Many people are taking on important acts and learning projects in his memory my limited capabilities, wanted to join in that. The idea that came to me was to review R. Lichtenstein z”l’s published volumes. While he wrote more than many realize (here’s the bibliography), there are, as far as I know, thirteen books he wrote or that were based on his talks. Eight of those are notes on shiurim he gave at Yeshivat Har Etzion, one is a collection, Minchat Aviv, of articles he published, and four volumes (By His Light, two volumes of Leaves of Faith, and Varieties of Religious Experience) collect English language talks he gave or articles he wrote. As I try to review for myself some of the fruit of R. Lichtenstein’s toiling and tilling in the garden of Torah, I hope to share one stimulating idea a week. I make no pretense that I will be comprehensive, will capture all or a representative sample of what is found in those works, only that I can, in a few hundred words, share a thought worth knowing.
