1 Old Boys Collegians Cricket Club

President’s Report

Ladies and Gentlemen, Life members, members, sponsors and friends of the club, it’s with pride that we conclude another full and action packed season of cricket with Old Boys Collegians Cricket Club. My debut season as President for our club has certainly been full on, with many learning opportunities and it is with some pride that we have had the ability to provide cricket for so many participants. OBC are, by some distance, the biggest club in the South Island, with over 700 active members. There are plenty of moving parts and I am very grateful for our committee, our contractors and suppliers for delivering such a fantastic opportunity for members to play. We are spoilt by having the best setting for cricket in and the effort of our most recent Life Member, Paul McEwan needs to be acknowledged. He stepped in at the 13th hour a couple of years ago to take over as the Groundsperson and has done a magnificent job. We are indebted for your lifetime’s contribution to the club, which not only impacts the senior members with the , but also the quality of pitches that you provide to our youngest of members. I sincerely say thank you from me personally and also from everyone else who you have helped in a small way. We have taken positive steps in updating the facilities of the club in recent seasons and we have completed the short term plan on the changing rooms with the addition of the shower and toilet block. This has already made an impact on the club and, if we can find a way to connect up the hot water, the showers will be well received. Our junior section continues to grow. After the magnificent impact of the world cup, we were able to provide 58 junior teams the ability to play cricket this season. Our whole junior program is successfully run by Mandie Godliman and her merry band at Coaching Solutions. Mandie is the face of the club at our junior ranks and her output and level of performance is second to none. Coaching Solutions is truly a market leader within the sporting community, not only in Christchurch but also New Zealand. Her impact within the club needs to be acknowledged within the junior ranks, but also the women’s section. It is a win-win relationship, as we are able to offer a rich employment for her business and she represents the club really well. So Mandie thank you for your exceptional effort for not only last year, but the years previous and let’s hope it continues for many more years. Performance wise, the women’s section was our shining light this season. With particular mention to the Premier women’s side, who punched above their weight all year to fight to the final weekend where they fell just short. With some dubious decisions from the powers that be they might have been duel champions for the summer. The division 1 team were very competitive and made the final once again, with a highlight of playing on Hagley Oval during the year. Thank you to Camille, April and their vast array of helpers who do a great job of herding the troops weekly.

2 Old Boys Collegians Cricket Club

The men’s section had a lacklustre season to say the least, the Premier team got themselves into situations to win, but wilted in crucial situations. With a young squad who are approaching the 20-50 games of experience they should be learning to make sure they win the pivotal situations and have a successful season. Congratulations to the three members who richly deserved their club caps this season; ● David Wakefield • Ben Brady

● Adam Hastilow (Who had the special honour of receiving his cap off Shane Bond and Olympic Bronze medallist Tom Walsh)

The 2A and 2B Gators suffered from lower numbers at times and did a fantastic job to remain competitive. Greg McCarthy worked himself ragged to make sure that we had 3 full sides on the paddock weekly and was deservedly awarded the ‘HSOB Services to the Club’ for his impact.

Our social teams of Team Boon, SNCC and the Presidents team were always a welcome sight on Elmwood Park (though too infrequently). Team Boon were desperately unlucky to fall short due to some unfair metro cricket rulings and I hope they remain competitive again this year to win a title that they richly deserve. It was great to see the Presidents side back representing OBC with Hamish Anderson back from a short hiatus (never retirement) coordinating the troops, a significant improvement was the match reports courtesy of James O’Connor. 3 Old Boys Collegians Cricket Club

Being a small club, city and nation we are very close to people who can be successful in their chosen fields and OBC is no stranger to success. Congratulations to the following club members who had higher honours:

International Representatives Blackcaps Holland T20 World Cup White Ferns Todd Astle Logan Van Beek Erin Bermingham Katey Martin New Zealand A New Zealand U19 Todd Astle Daniel Stanley Ed Nuttall

Canterbury Representatives Men’s Women’s Underage Teams Canterbury Men’s/Kings Canterbury Magicians Canterbury U19 Todd Astle Erin Bermingham Morgan Jeffery Ed Nuttall Mereana Hyde Daniel Stanley Cameron Fletcher Logan Van Beek Otago Sparks Women’s U21 Katey Martin Allie Mace Cochrane Canterbury A Olivia Thompson Joel Abraham Emma Kench Jeff Case Mereana Hyde Morgan Jeffery

I would like to say a big thank you to the committee for all their hard work over the previous 12 months. We are purely volunteers and we do put our heart and soul into all our endeavours for the club. We have learnt some hard lessons this year which we are better for, particular mention to Simon Carter for his leadership keeping us on the straight and narrow and also Ryan Astle for his grunt work for keeping me and the other committee members honest and making sure we are doing our jobs. A new year brings us fresh perspective and renewed hunger to lift the club to greater heights, which you will see some of the benefits hopefully before the season commences. Thank you to our outgoing committee members and welcome to our new ones. Thank you for choosing OBC as your cricket club and let's hope 2016/17 is our most successful season yet. #BeTHEclub Paul Knight Club President

The season 2015/2016 was a bit of a rollercoaster with plenty of ups and downs on and off the field. The obvious main low was not to have any trophies locked away in the cabinet. With that said, the performances of the top 3 teams were not where all agreed they should be but there were still plenty of positives and highlights to come out of the season: - Club men Todd Astle, Cam Fletcher, Logan Van Beek and Ed Nuttall performed well for our province and was great to see Todd again pushing for higher honours and debuting for international T20 in the Black Caps. - Daniel Stanley making the NZ under 19 World Cup team and seeing him progress as a player. - Adam Hastilow becoming the mens coach and implementing some stability at trainings and receiving his cap with cameo appearances from Shane Bond and Tom Walsh being a highlight at training.

The premier team started well early in the season and unfortunately was on the wrong side of close games a few times which put them out of the contention of finishing top in all 3 categories. I do believe the premier squad has started to gel and as a group are wanting to improve on what was a foundation building season. A special mention to Jeff Case for a good debut season for OBC and Ben Ward for stepping up and becoming a reliable run scorer for the club. Also a mention to Joel for leading the way with his run scoring and captaincy over the season.

The 2A's season I felt never really got out of 4th gear. We lost a couple of tight games in the one-dayers which saw us finishing 5th and not making the semi finals for the first time in 5 years. We competed and played well in the T20's and unfortunately didn't make the final due to run rate. The T20 on a Thursday night was a big hit! The 2A's probably played the best in the 2 day competition with some very comprehensive wins but unfortunately a loss to St Albans late in the season meant we were out of contention to take the title. Again, like the Prems, the 2A's playing environment was very enjoyable with great comraderie and friendships being made. Key performers were certainly Charlie Dale and Joey Edgerton-Till who performed exceedingly well and showed their ability.

This season the gators returned to the 2B competition and although I don't think the results showed it, I felt that the gators showed that they were more than capable of being in this grade. Once again I felt we had some good recruitment and it was great to see some new people getting involved especially within the gators. Again, the main issue was the continual change of faces in the team and at times struggling to put 11 on the park. Was great to see some of the gators players stepping up into the 2A's and performing well, most noticeably

6 Old Boys Collegians Cricket Club

George McLean scoring 74 in a 2A game. Also a mention to Hasan Sheub for working hard on his game and receiving the gators MVP.

In closing, it is fair to say that the season 2015/2016 was one of rebuilding within the club on and off the field. I believe the momentum shift of the last part of the season, and all of the hard work that has been put in since the season closed from all involved has really set us up well for a very enjoyable and promising season ahead. There is a very positive environment to lead us into the new season. Lastly, it has been a pretty big step up for me to fill Knightys boots in the club captain role and wasn't quite sure of what I had got myself in to! A big thanks to Knighty, Simon, Hasti and captains for nudging me in the right direction. A huge thank you to all club members and players for your commitment to the club. It is because of you and our shared passion for the game that has made this role easier. Here is to filling the cabinet in 2016/2017!

Men’s Captains Reports:

Premiers The Premier Men's team endured a somewhat disappointing season, finishing 6th in all 3 competitions. Despite showing glimpses of our capabilities in all 3 competitions, we lacked the consistency needed to put ourselves in contention. There were certainly some good signs from the players at the end of the season, and there is a real desire to improve our results this coming season. In terms of standout performances, there were a number of players who put their hands up at various times, and the key going forward will be to do it on a more consistent basis. Jeff Case, Adam Hastilow, Tom Taylor and Jack Lewis all had some good knocks through the season. It was great to see Ben Ward have his most consistent season with the bat. His 5 fifties showcased his talent and he will be hoping to turn them into match winning innings this season. With the ball, Ryan Astle had a great season, particularly in the shorter formats where he has proved to be a real asset. Ben Brady, Adam Hastilow and Paul Knight also had notable performances with the ball and it was good to see the likes of Joseph Edgerton-Till force his way into the Premier side after consistent performances in the 2A side. With pre-season training just around the corner it will be an important time for us as we look to turn around some of our recent results. A special mention should also go to our coach Adam Hastilow who has led by example and has fit into the role really well.

2A (Scrapheap) The OBC second grade (scrapheap) started their season with a hiss and a roar getting a few early victories under their belt. They went undefeated in the first few rounds but started to fall short due to a lack of consistency throughout the team. The scrapheap showed a bit of ticker through the middle of the season giving themselves a chance of making the 1-day semifinals. Unfortunately falling short of the semifinals the boys held strong to finish off the 1-day season in a respectable 5th position. The 2-day season was a different kettle of fish, the scrapheap was ontop for the majority of the season sharing the reins with St Albans the whole way. After a few rainy weekends and some results not going their way yet again they fell short of the top honours coming in 3rd overall. There were some great results from the 2-day competition for the scrapheap though. In particular, the fielding was one of the best I have seen since my time at the club. There were also great contributions in the batting department with several players making significant runs throughout the season. The bowling was as usual on point and they restricted teams to very low totals in important occasions.

9 Old Boys Collegians Cricket Club

Finally, to the 20/20 competition. This is a trophy that the scrapheap has won every year bar one since the trophy commenced in 2008, so this meant that there was a lot of pressure on the team since they were the ones to beat since having such good success in the past. The competition was slightly different than previous years. There were several Thursday night games meaning the boys had to step up after having a strenuous day of hard graft. Once again the scrapheap had a good 20/20 season beating the majority of teams along the way. Unfortunately failing to make the final due to run rate meant the scrapheap had to settle for 3rd to finish off the season.

2B (Gators) The Gators season, like many others before had its highs and lows. It started off with a mixture of wins and losses and this trend continued throughout the season. Grounds and playing numbers made things difficult at times, however huge efforts were made by the likes of Greg and Knighty to mitigate this and considering the difficulties all clubs are having with numbers, to have been able to field a team every week was a great to see, and made being a captain a damn sight easier! The season itself was a good platform for some players to make their name known around the club, with players such as George and Charlie (just to name a couple) showing they were more than capable of making the step up into second grade. It was also great opportunity for me personally as a player to lead the team, as it taught me a fair bit about the game itself and my own game. Overall it was a season which had its challenges, however it was a lot of fun and I look forward to seeing what the 16/17 season has in store for the mighty Gators!

Team Boon It’s fair to say that season 2015/16 what a season of “What if” for the lads in beige. What if we had our strongest team for at least one week? What if we could consistently get 11 players to play on a Saturday? What if we didn’t default that crucial game after Christmas? What if we weren’t unfairly docked five points for a default to a team above us?

In true Boon spirit, the lads fought on to the bitter end, only to come up just short in second place. Team Boon held top spot on the table for the majority of the season but it was our arch nemesis Marist-Harewood who deservedly took out the grade. We were unable to get over the line against MH in the three games we played against them. An undoubted highlight was playing a top of the table clash at Hagley Oval a week after the Australia vs New Zealand test match. The Boons relished to opportunity to play on the same pitch of

10 Old Boys Collegians Cricket Club

Brendon McCullum’s last test record breaking innings. Unfortunately, there was only one maximum, with Sam Welsh putting one halfway up the bank. Perhaps Team Boon got too comfortable in the changing sheds at half-time as the second innings fielding and bowling display was well below the usual high standard and despite a late comeback, MH easily won the match.

Team Boon is becoming world famous in New Zealand - as quoted by former Boon, Darcy Waldergrave on Radio Sport. Team Boon was fortunate enough to be invited to play a match at the Valley of Peace in February. Like Boon, the Valley of Peace uphold special traditions but were generous enough to let Boon play in their traditional beige. Captained by Halswell stalwart Dayle Eathorne, the Valley of Peace team won a close fought match after chasing down a very competitive Boon score. Eathorne’s brother in law, Boon veteran Phil ‘fathead’ Mckay who was fresh of being spanked around the park a week earlier by another Eathorne, couldn't muster the magic in the last over that he’s been known for over the last decade with his Rod Latham type slow-medium pacers.

Before we get into the specific individual highlights for the season, I must thank a couple of key personnel. Firstly Andrew Fergus for his work behind the scenes and looking after the Boon finances. No.4 Bar for their continued support and sponsorship of the team. Lastly, Will Stribling for his organisation of the team each week and the sterling job with compiling the yearly and career statistics.

Fielding Some of the catches in the field this year would easily make any highlight reel. Some notable inclusions would be: Will Stribling - A one handed reaction grab vs East Shirley to turn the match, still to this day Trippleberry cannot recall seeing the ball until he looked at the palm of his hand! Jon Direen - JD made the short leg position his own. At the home of Boon, Elmwood 3, always good for a word or ten, Door took evasive action and protected his boyish good looks as the ball was hit straight towards his melon by claiming a miracle catch in close. Mark Weeds - The weedkiller is the rock in the slip cordon but even more lethal in the field with his direct hits. Weeds could smell a runout a mile away and with his rocket arm and pin point accuracy, he left many a batsman scratching their swedes as they walked back to the hutch. Weeds also claimed the most catches in the field - 5 Wicket-keepers - Unfortunately Boon was unable to have a wicket keeper on a consistent basis. Mike Smith started the season off well but was unable to see the season out. Mike performed the role very well. Other to step in were Scott Kilday, Phil Watson, Andrew Fergus and Phil McKay. Perhaps it was Fathead McKay who was the surprise package behind the pins. Barely conceded any byes and his reaction time was surprisingly excellent for a guy who carries most of his weight above his shoulders

Batting Team Boon performed very well with the bat this year. Despite the skipper choosing to bowl first for the first half of the season, the batsman set the win up by getting off to a solid start both chasing and setting. Some highlights were:

Highest total - 318/4 vs Halswell Highest individual score - 163, Mark Weeds vs Halswell Most 100s - Ben Blair (3) Most 50s - Scott Bermingham (3) Most runs - 554, Ben Blair Most 6s - Ben Blair (23) Most 4s - Ben Blair (62)

As mentioned above, the top order set up the platform for Boon. Mark Weeds ([email protected]), Ben Blair (554@92) and Scott Bermingham (344@29) scored the bulk of the runs for Boon this season. They had able lower order support from Sam Welsh, Phil McKay, Scott Kilday and Jeremy Moore.

The obvious standout is Ben ‘Coast’ Blair. The talented left-hander knows how to pace an innings and loves the red ink. Unfortunately for Blair, his last innings duck cost him a much deserved season average of 100 (then going on to compare the innings to Bradman’s last dig!).

Bowling In Sam Welsh and Jeremy ‘Curry’ Moore, Team Boon had arguably the best opening bowling combination in the grade. Welshy turned up every week, sometimes a bit worse the wear, but always charged in and bet the bat at least 3-4 times an over. Welsh bowled with heat and swing and took the title of most wickets with a late flurry towards the end of the season. The old warhorse Moore delivered week in week out. Cuz bowled with great control with most of his wickets coming via bowled or LBW due to his highly accurate left arm over in-swingers. Scott Bermingham provided valuable back up with his miserly in-duckers so too big Jonny Door, Phil McKay and when not bowling “trippleberries” Will Stribling with his surprise straight ball, chimed in with valuable poles. Some highlights were:

Lowest innings - 37 all out (Richmond) Most overs - 118, Sam Welsh Most wickets - 35, Sam Welsh Best bowling - 6-24, Scott Bermingham vs BWU

Notable mentions: Sam Welsh (35wkts @ 11), Scott Bermingham (34wkts @ 12), Jeremy Moore (28wkts @ 12), Will Stribling, (12wkts @ 23) and Jonny Direen (12 wkts @ 20)

Presidents The fact that we are closer to the new season as opposed to the last is surely a good omen – because next year’s report will surely be better – impossible to be worse performance wise! There seemed to be the meeting of all the dark stars during this season – Player availability issues, the worst batting tracks in living memory (I can assure you some of us have very long memories by benefit of age), and mediocre performances across the board. But above and beyond all this we had fun. The thing we looked forward to most each week was not the game itself but the match reports by Paul O’Connor where all and sundry were rightfully vilified for their on and off field performances. In the case of the batsmen, unfortunately off and off field performances! In the case of the bowlers, they just wished they were off the field. It became clear that team member’s egos got in the way of their performances, because to be chastised by Paul was truly a rite of passage into this team, and he never sees much humour in good performances. Oh what delight to see your name on Monday morning’s report! There of course was the odd good performance but few and far between. There were only 6 fifties scored by the whole team when it was normal for 2 or 3 batsmen to get that many individually in past years. The team as a whole only got past 200 once when not long ago 230 plus was our par. Having said that, as mentioned the wickets we played on were generally shite, and there will be nobody in the team sorry to see Hospital Corner being put to the dozer, but many other grounds were substandard even for our slightly elderly mix. The City Council needs to be put on notice for this shambles. However, I am sure if we had seen more of Matt Hayward (6 games) Jim Blakely (2 games) Simon Carter (2 games) Darin Cusack (2 games) there would have been better reading. Of the regular batsmen more should have come from Bull, Cotton and Anderson and considering that 6 of the remaining regular players had batting averages under 10 it is not surprising we were not particularly competitive. Damien Lodge, our Aussy import showed glimpses of form (sweet back foot drive through covers) Dean Iggo was a great new recruit near the end of the season with both bat and gloves.

The bowling was more often than not up against it with us trying to defend low scores. We also quite often were a bowler or two short, where when in competitive situations there would be a blow out over 4 or 5 overs. Again had we seen more of Matt Hayward, Simon Carter, Titch McGuire, Duncan Clayton, Peter Beggs and Alec Astle we would have blown most sides away. Of the regular bowlers Hamish Anderson did a great job as did Paul O’Connor. There were credible performances at times from Gary Hall, James Barringer, James O’Connor and Geoff Cotton, who made significant sacrifice (body wise) to come out of bowling retirement to pull us through in the latter half of the season. The fielding was generally abysmal. The good part, being a team in transition, is I believe we are in a good spot to build a more competitive side for the future. We had a good 8 or so players as mentioned above that did not play as much as we would have liked but they have had a taste of it, so with the added attraction of a great team spirit (and of course Paul’s weekly comedic postings) we hope to see more of them. We are truly an international team with Damien Lodge (Aussy), Gary Hall (Somewhere in England where they clearly don’t speak the Queen’s language), Greg Panagiotis (Greek – in charge of team finances!) Justin McFarlane (Japan) and we have even accepted into the mix our token Roman (catholic) – Peter Beggs. (Although I suspect there are others who refuse to own up) We also look forward to seeing last season’s Vice Captain more – Andrew McGill who could only manage 3 games – so much for being a so called great manager of time. And a special send out to Geoff Henry – we are all looking forward to a nice array of female suitors again next season. See you soon.

Since the start of the Women and Girls section in 2003 the club has gone from strength to strength, now being seen as one of the Premier clubs in Christchurch.

The first year of the new club saw them winning the prestigious Premier Women’s One day competition. 12 years on we have over 6 women & girls teams playing in the Christchurch competition.

The Premiers easily reached the final of the 1 day competition to miss out on the day. But won the T20 & Kirsty Bond 6aside competitions.

Division 1 also made the final of their competition again to miss out on the day.

Our Girls Yr7/8 Gold team came 2nd and our yr7/8 Red team came 3rd.

Our Girls Yr5/6 Navy team were top at the end of the season of their grade. .

And a new Girls Super 8 softball team were unbeaten to finish top of their table.

Further Club playing opportunities This year saw another trip to Queenstown to play against an Otago local team. We were again very fortunate at the International events centre on the main oval.

Women’s Captains Reports

Premier Women’s The 2015-2016 Season was seen as a rebuilding phase for the Premier Women Side. Majority of the people around the cricket scene wrote us off for the season and but this gave seem to give the girls more motivation winning all but one game heading into the final. Sadly it wasn’t our day when it came to the final, which LPW took out the One-Day title. On the upside we managed to win the T20 competition and also the 6aside Kristy Bond Series.

Over the season we had a consistent group of young players who played every week, which enabled us to develop as a team and continue the momentum throughout the season and ended up playing some fantastic cricket with some very convincing wins.

Highlights of the season: • Finishing a game verse Easts within an hour after bowling them out for 41 and Katey Martin blasting 36 from 16 balls to wrap the game up in 3.2 overs. Game done and sitting at Joe Garage having brunch just after 10am is not a bad effort. • Outstanding spreads that everyone contributed to make Picnic Club one of the highlights of day and even more so when this turned into a BBQ PC thanks to Adrian’s outstanding efforts on the BBQ at home games. • Haley Banks providing some outstanding match reports and will be one to be looking out for next season.

This season we welcomed Dawn Prestidge from the United Kingdom to side and she defiantly caused a few problems for the opposition with her off spin especially down at Elmwood against Sydenham picking up 6/20. Dawn also provided the side with stability in the middle/top order with her consistent performances with the bat. Despite a number of us working hard to convince her to stay for another season she is returning home and certainly will be missed both on and off the field.

Big thanks to Adrian Simmons who provided us with Sunblock as a fundraiser towards our new playing strip.

To David our coach this season thanks for the work you put in both at trainings and warm- ups on game days.

Bring on next season. Let’s continue this seasons work and go one better next season.

Division 1 The team had a great year, only being beaten by 1 team - Merivale Papanui: Including losing the final and a memorable game on Hagley Oval. Several of those games went down to the wire losing in the last over. A great effort was put in by all the girls. We came second in the Div 1 competition.

There is a fantastic atmosphere in the team, despite struggling for numbers some weeks – the girls always tried their best and worked well together, there were some fantastic individual and team performances – awesome watching the individuals skills of all the players develop over the year:

Special mentions: Thanks to our parents, great support – always someone there to assist (especially: Julie, Marty, Julian, Dave and Sarah)

Four of the team made Canterbury Development squads – Emma McLean, Abby Gherkin, Ellena Firth and Caitlin Davidson – well done to those girls.

From the stats some efforts worth mentioning:

Abby Gerkin: our highly skilled wicket keeper who also batted with destructive hitting power – scoring 5 x 50s a total of 473 runs.

Ellena Firth: a genuine all–rounder, taking 9 wickets at an Economy rate of 4.23, some really good innings with the bat, 171 runs for the season and superb fielding skills taking some great catches.

Our leading Run scorer with 503 runs for the season, 4 x 50s and a top score of 107 in a T20, she also took the most wickets – (10 div 1 plus 4 in Prems games) with an economy rate of 3.05 our MVP Caitlin Davidson

For enthusiasm and a big improvement in batting and bowling we award most improved to Fanchea Moloney.
