COMMITTEE OPERATIONS

At the 2011 AGM:  Harry Burson stood down as Treasurer and the vacant position was not filled. Subsequently, John Grocott agreed to take on the role of managing the accounts but stated he was not looking to fill the position permanently. As it transpired, no one was found to fill the vacant Treasurer’s position and John effectively filled this role all season.  Lynn Savage resigned from the Committee. Her position as Women’s Club Captain was jointly shared this season by Grace Grocott and newly elected Megan Harkerss.

At the first meeting Peter Dow was elected Chairperson of the committee.

Four subcommittees operated throughout the season. Their responsibilities are given below, with convenors as noted:

PRESIDENTS REPORT

It again gives me considerable pride and pleasure to record another successful season for our club in 2011-2012. In some ways this was a year of recovery after the earthquakes and as usual, we have given it our best shot. An early highlight was being awarded the club of the year at the Sport Canterbury awards in November. This was mainly attributed to our senior men winning the national club championship in Auckland in April 2011 but our junior section also made a contribution. It was a thrill to receive the award on behalf of the club.

As you will read further on in the report, we won a good share of CCA trophies and competed well in all grades. There were many good performances and some special highlights as also noted further on. Congratulations to all the teams and individuals who received these awards and special congratulations to Jason Pawson for his 50 and other personal milestones. These were acknowledged at our prize giving in April.

There were other notable individual highlights.:  Tim Johnston was selected for Canterbury.  Sara McGlashan and Morna Nielsen for the White Ferns.  Jacinta Savage and Hayley Jensen for Canterbury. My warm congratulations to these players and all other club members, including juniors, who made representative teams this season. We are proud of their efforts.

Our Junior programme continues under the leadership of Henk Stoffers, Dave Teale and the Junior committee. My thanks to Henk and Dave for their efforts and all those who helped during the season including committee members, coaches and team managers. Our Junior award function at the end of the season was again a great success. There was a good attendance and lots of potential on display. A fitting end to the season. The junior programme is important in the progress and development of the game both for the club and the wider community.

Our senior award function in April was another great success with a good attendance. It is a great way to acknowledge club performances for the season. Warm congratulations to all who received awards and trophies. It was a particular pleasure to award the President’s trophy to Jeff Cope for his magnificent contribution as secretary for about the last 17 years. A great effort. He has served the club well, not only as an administrator but also as a player in the lower grades. He has been a club member for over 40 years.

Finally, thanks to all who have helped in the success of our club during the season. Our management committee led by Peter Dow, with support from Vice President Howard Morel and Secretary Jeff Cope (as mentioned). It was sad to lose Harry Burson as Treasurer after a number of years of excellent service, but he remains on the committee and his experience and guidance is invaluable. The position has been filled temporarily by me as we search to find a replacement. Other major contributions include the Junior section led by Henk Stoffers (as mentioned), our coaching team led by Neville Lyons, our team captains and managers and our new groundsman, Peter Dunell. All have made a great contribution. On the social side, Steve and Jenny Saunders for catering, our bar staff and all parents and supporters for their assistance and support at Burwood when necessary. Everyone has played a valuable part in the life of our club. We are fortunate to be well served by many individuals dedicated to the success of our Club. Long may this continue.

ECSCC Annual Report 2011/12 Page 5

Once again a new season is approaching. There will be challenges ahead. The new blood introduced into our senior men last season will be keen to consolidate their position and develop their careers. We wish them well. There are issues with women’s cricket that need to be addressed – lack of senior teams being a particular concern. Not an easy matter. We also need to maintain our teams in the lower grades to provide a good base for the senior teams. We need more players. There is potential for declining numbers in our junior section with the drop in numbers at local schools following the quakes. We have a good programme so this may not be an issue. It will be interesting to see the enrolments this coming season. There are no simple solutions and we must work hard to maintain our club at top level.

There is a great spirit in the club and I hope all members will make a contribution to the life of the club and also enjoy the wonderful game of cricket in the coming season. We have good facilities and a good programme in place. We must continue to strive to be the pre- eminent cricket club in Christchurch. Hopefully the earthquakes are over! I look forward to watching your progress and wish you all the best for the season ahead.

John Grocott PRESIDENT

IN MEMORY

John Capstick

John Grocott recalls a former Easts team-mate.

“John Capstick, an old acquaintance of mine, died recently aged 74.

John had a long involvement with cricket, playing senior cricket for the club from 1955 to 1969, captaining the side for a couple of years in the 1960’s. He was playing for East when I joined in October 1956. In fact, he was when I went out to play my first innings. The previous season he had played for NZ Colts against the 1956 West Indies touring team, top-scoring in the NZ first innings with 45, bowled Sobers. He also toured NSW country with the Canterbury Kiwis that year (I think).

During his time with us, John scored 3133 runs at an average of 18.99 with 10 fifties and one century. He was a lot better than those figures suggest. He also took 2 wickets at 24.3. John later played President's grade for HSOB. He was a life member of CJCA serving as committee member and coach/selector for about 25 years.

In business, John was involved in sports goods retailing and, along with Sam Clarke, purchased Anderson and Hill Sports. They ran it very successfully for a long time.

John was a well-liked easy going person, affable with a good sense of humour. Recently, he battled with liver and pancreatic cancer for a couple of years.

His parting is a very sad loss.”

2011 Sir - Sport Canterbury Awards

In November, the Club was honoured by being chosen as the winner of the Christchurch City Council Sports Club of the Year Award, presented at the annual Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Trust – Sport Canterbury Trust awards evening. This annual event brings together the top sports people and sports clubs in Canterbury and provides the community with the opportunity to recognise and celebrate their successes.

The club had been nominated by the CCA on the basis of the Premier Men winning the National Club Championship the previous season . Other clubs nominated covered a wide range of codes including athletics, rowing, rugby, golf and swimming.

The NCC win plus the club’s resilience in providing a successful senior and junior cricket programme throughout the season, despite the earthquake disruptions, no doubt contributed to the club being chosen as the overall top sports club in Christchurch.

A fine addition to the Trophy Cabinet, thanks to the unheralded efforts of many club members and their families. ECSCC Annual Report 2011/12 Page 7

COACHING AND SELECTION

Men’s Grades

Selectors Premier /2A grades: Nick Bates, Tim Papps & Nev. Lyons 3A grade: Nick Bates & captain

For the selection panel, 2011/12 was always going to be a season for redevelopment. Retirements and the movement of key members of our successful senior team to other parts of New Zealand, meant we were down in both playing numbers and experience. The development of our younger players and rebuilding a new team culture needed to be the priorities in our development plans for the future of the East Shirley senior squad and club.

The selectors struggled to fill teams at the start of the season due to a lack of players, and one casualty was that we were unable to field a 2B side. Most of last season’s 2B team progressed to 2A and became part of the senior squad. The challenge facing the coaches was to develop the skills and mind-set needed for senior cricket, and with the help of some talented older and younger players in this squad, good progress was made.

Selecting the teams each week is not an easy - or thankful- task, and my thanks to Nick Bates for a terrific effort again. A job well done mate

Premier Grade: During August, the captain Tim Papps and I met to set in place a draft plan for the coming season. Fitness testing and training at Profitness was not available this season due to the earthquake and this was sadly missed. My thanks to Steve Barry for the many years he has provided this important pre-season input which has been a key factor in our past successes.

With several players overseas playing in England, Scotland and Holland, and Tim away captaining the NZ indoor team at the world cup, the first few games were always going to be a challenge. As expected, we started the season on the back foot and we now needed the older players in the team to step up and take the opportunity and challenge put in front of them. Now we needed commitment and plenty of hard work by all players to move the team forward.

The one day competition became a learning process for the team as we needed to rebuild the self-confidence, belief and hardness required to become successful. We were always short of that one experienced bowler needed to bowl ten overs in the one day series. While the results didn’t come our way, the talent shown by both batters and bowlers showed me that we had the nucleus of a very exciting group of players. .

The two day competition was our new challenge and I felt the team was now developing into a very competitive unit, with batters batting well and bowlers bowling in partnerships. Batsmen Jarad Cookson, DJ Lyons and Hamish Teale showed this year they were becoming our main contributors, with Jarad getting two centuries and DJ one. Bowlers were bowling in partnerships, led by Jason Pawson and backed up by Matt Gilray and Jed Roberts, with spinner Tim Johnston (with Tim making his first class appearance late in the season). But the player that really stepped up each week and showed the younger players what experience, hardness and good skills can contribute to a team effort, was Jason Pawson. Jason was the best bowler in CCA senior cricket yet again with a magnificent week-in and week-out consistent performance. His was the best all-round ECSCC Annual Report 2011/12 Page 11

performance by an East senior player since I have been coaching at the club. Jason was awarded the CCA senior bowler and sportsman of the year and also collected the East’s club player of the year. I look forward to him defending both these trophies during the 2012-13 season.

The team was well captained again by Tim Papps, who had an interrupted season. The fact that the team went into the last two-day game with a chance of winning the trophy speaks volumes for the efforts of Tim and all players. It showed that our goal of developing a “playing for one another” philosophy , which has been a key factor in our successes for many years, was beginning to pay dividends. We ended up finishing a close second in the competition, a tremendous team result considering this was a rebuilding year.

Second Grade: This team was adversely affected by the movement of players filling in for the senior team when required, yet still produced another great all-round performance. The players worked hard on developing their skills and benefited by working with our senior squad. We now have several young talented players who are ready to become first team players over the next couple of years. One outstanding performance for the year was Mitch Baird’s total runs of 791 which won him the club’s batting trophy. He was backed up by Ben Hanham, whose 419 runs was also a good effort, especially as he only arrived from SBHS at Xmas time. Bowling was more widely spread around with C Morel, K Knowles, Jared Van Ike, W Otte, H Clark and spinner C Batchelor sharing most of the bowling effort.

A great effort Boys

Third Grade: This team had a strong squad and again showed improvement this year. They had a good turn out each Wednesday night at training and this showed each Saturday when they consistently performed well. The high-light for this team was the all-round play of Matt Friedwald. He had a season not to be forgotten, scoring 685 runs including two centuries and, in one bowling spell, taking six wickets for 0 runs. He was ably backed up by Karl Smith and Murray Seaton. This squad has developed a great team spirit over the last two years which is a key part of their success - and it was great to see them enjoying the after match functions each week. Well played Hooters.

Women’s Premier Grade

The women’s squad has been developing well, with several very good younger players coming through the ranks under the coaching of Garfield Charles. However, this year’s performances were a disappointment, reflecting, to some extent, the wider issues facing women’s cricket. I believe that the design of the women’s club cricket competitions needs a major overhaul. A lot of the girls are not enjoying the game due to the disjointed nature of the competition and the team disruptions when the representative games begin. Creating “conference” sides made up of players from across clubs has not helped, as the girls end up in split teams and lose their own club identity. Our own numbers fell this year and we were unable to field a Division 1 side. This is a very precarious position to be in, and it created a number of selection issues. Many thanks to Megan Harkerss who made sure East Shirley kept this team on the field when required.

Last Word 2011/2012 season was another great year in terms of a rebuilding period for our club. There were some outstanding individual performances during the season and, across the grades, 24 centuries were scored and 15 five (or better) bags taken. We have a number of talented young players in our club and we need to make sure they are moving ECSCC Annual Report 2011/12 Page 12

forward, upgrading their skills and knowledge and absorbing the East’s team & club culture. The challenges that face our senior and junior club over the next couple of years will be enormous and it will take much energy, planning and support by the club management, coaches, players and supporters to ensure we succeed.

I would like to thank Garfield and Batesie for their efforts this year and all the junior club management and coaches for their time and effort. My thanks to Peter Dunell, the club’s new ground curator, who made sure we had good practice blocks and wicket, which really helped later in the season. Also many thanks to the players, adults, children, coaching staff, club management and our loyal group of family supporters who all help to develop our wonderful club culture.

PREMIER GRADE

The 2011/2012 season was always going to be a tough campaign for East Shirley given the outstanding success of the past season when we were crowned national champions for the first time, and magnified by the fact that we had lost up to seven hardened veterans in the off season for different reasons. We recruited some fresh faces from Shirley Boys and St Bede’s and along with some key local East Shirley stalwarts we proceeded into the new season to create a new East Shirley culture that would serve for the next generation of senior cricket at the club and provide a new benchmark for youngsters to aspire to in the coming seasons.

We started the one-day campaign against with a new look side, including a blast from the past in the form of Tim Grocott. Although we lost a tight game, the signs were looking good for the new look outfit with Hamish (Ham) Teale and DJ (Digimoon) Lyons both scoring half centuries and Jason (Bucket) Pawson grabbing three wickets. The winning of game two against a good Old Boys team was to be the finest part of the one day campaign and the only game we won, with Ham Teale scoring another half century in the process. Narrow loses kept us out of semi-finals contention, as we struggled to ‘finish’ off teams after getting them on the back foot.

Notable performers in the one day campaign were Ham Teale and Nick (Nicko) Johnston, both averaging around 30, and JP, Tim (TJ) Johnston and Jed (Foggy) Roberts all claiming 13 scalps each to keep us in the games.

The 20/20 had a different format this year with a full round robin due to the extra playing day in the calendar. We have been perennial battlers in this format in recent seasons and although we failed to make the final this year there was a definite improvement in the standard of our play. I look forward to playing this again next year as we become better at improvising and using our cricketing brains. Key performers for the 20/20 were Matt (Masterchef) Gilray and Jed Roberts with the ball, and Tim Hampton-Matehe and Ken McClure with the bat.

After some soul searching and conversations following the one-day campaign, we gave the two-day competition a good crack. Ending up a narrow second to St Albans was a great result and showed how much resolve the team had after the one-day campaign. The two-dayers provided a great stage for the younger players to get time in the middle and also for the bowlers to get long spells at the crease.

Notable performances during the two-day competition were Jared (Cooky) Cookson who not only scored his debut senior century but backed it up a week later with a second. DJ Lyons also scored his debut two-day century and backed it up with other strong performances including a 90 against the winners St Albans.

Bowling-wise, you cannot look past Jason Pawson. He led the bowling attack from the front and is in career best form. He worked well in tandem with Matt Gilray, who bowled with consistency and fire all season and didn’t even let up once his celebrity status hit the woman’s magazines. Tim Johnston and Jed Roberts were also key contributors in our race for the two-day title.

ECSCC Annual Report 2011/12 Page 15

All-in-all, a testing season - but a necessary one for the rebuilding of East Shirley back to powerhouse status. The young debutants will be all the better next year with a full season of senior cricket under their belts and there are good signs moving forward for the club in respect to the talent coming through. With the likes of Jared Cookson. Ham Teale, Tim Hampton-Matehe and Ben (Bobby D) Hanham coming together with the East Shirley veterans, plus a few off season signings, we should have a great 2012/2013 season.

Special mention must go to Tim Johnston for his debut for Canterbury. He performed fantastically well and I wish him all the best for the forthcoming season and, although I would like him to be playing for us, I hope I hardly see him as this would mean he is getting a good crack at first class cricket.

I would also like to thank all the supporters who attend each game and give us unwavering support whether we win or lose. The club has a great tradition of supporters and friends of the club which make it such a special club to play for. Micky Johnston must get special mention for his new ‘Duffle’ hat which the boys loved, along with Nev’s ‘Moose’ Hat.

I hope everyone is wintering well and I look forward to seeing you all in the new season

2A GRADE

2011/2012 was another solid, enjoyable season for the 2nds (Budgies).

We started the season with a couple of solid wins in the one-day competition, where the boys impressed after a long off-season. Mitch Baird, still dark about missing out on last season’s batting trophy, showed real class in scoring a century against Marist that would put him in good stead for the rest of the year. The promising start fell away during the middle and latter stages of the one-day competition, meaning we just missed reaching the playoffs. But in amongst the narrow defeats were many notable achievements, including Kyle Knowles’ five for 25 against Burnside and four for 28 against St Albans, as well as Stuart Orr’s match-winning innings of 68no, also against Burnside. After coming up short in the one-day competition, the Twenty20’s offered us the chance to show the competitive cricket we were capable of playing. We were led by Mitch Baird with the bat, scoring 254 at 42.3 in six matches, and Chris Morel with the ball, taking 15 wickets at an average of 9. The team made the final with five wins from six matches, but the boys ended up falling just short in the final against a very strong Old Boys outfit. This was an outstanding effort from the young team and showed glimpses of what the team was capable of achieving. Following the Twenty20 competition, the two-day competition heated up as the boys looked to finish the season on a high. After losing to Old Boys before Christmas and getting a rained out result against Burnside, the boys knew that winning the remaining games would give us every chance of taking home the trophy. We managed to topple Marist and St Albans with extremely satisfying wins. Chris Morel was the stand out bowler against Marist, taking six for 49 off 13 overs in the first innings, and then we finished strongly with the bat of Ben Hanham with his maiden century for the club, scoring 101no to lead the team to victory. The win against Saints was another memorable game. Needing 221 off 29 overs, Mitch Baird came to the party scoring an impressive 137no to knock off the runs with ease. Coming up against Riccarton, we knew that if we could get the win we would be in good stead to take the title, with Sydenham and LPW to play in the last couple of games. We did all that was possible to win the game, scoring 258 runs, with Matthew Goode 79 and Will Otte hitting an impressive quick fire 78. We then bowled Riccarton out or 115 with Chris Morel again being the chief destroyer with four for 32. Riccarton were forced to follow on, losing one wicket on the first day, but were saved by rain the following week, with the game ending in a washout. The last two games were straight forward wins for the team. Young Kieran Foote impressed with a classy 125 no against Sydenham, leading the team to an easy win. Michael Vanner led the team to a good first innings total against LPW with a solid half century, which set up a large first innings lead and another clear-cut victory. However, while this impressive run of victories was not quite enough to claim the trophy, it was an extremely good effort from the young team, most of whom were in their debut season in the Second Grade. A special mention must be made of Chris Batchelor, Ben Hanham and James Ogier who gained promotion to the senior side , as well as Mitch Baird who took out the Club’s Batting Trophy for the season with a total of 791 runs at 39.55.

Thanks to all the boys involved in the Budgies this season. The squad has a lot of talent, and there were notable contributions made by every player. Thanks for the season and look forward to seeing everyone back in 2012.

This year started like any other, with a meeting at the sponsors. Minutes were taken, but legibility waned as the meeting wore on.

One thing different about this season was the appointment of Richard Papps to the role team captain, and coincidentally, opening bowler…

This season we were also delighted to welcome Karl Vernon Smith to the ranks to fill the whopper void left by Jason Riach.

The season got off to a familiar start with a fixture against a seasoned Merivale-Pap side. Equally familiar was the fact we had to battle away with limited numbers, and the result seemed somewhat inevitable.

In general, we struggled our way through to Christmas in terms of both player numbers and results. The weather was also against us, meaning we missed many games against the lower-ranked sides. As a result we felt unlucky to end up in section two following the break.

Some of the highlights from the first half of the season included:  Vern’s first hundred for the team  Timmy Williams scoring a 50 of 17 balls  Timmy Williams hitting a six to bring up said 50 and suffering a season ending shoulder injury in the process

Post-Christmas we welcomed back some of our MIA players and managed to string together a good run of wins.

The post-Christmas highlights included:  Murray Seaton scoring his first hundred for the team  Vern scoring his second hundred for the season (becoming the first 3A player to score two hundreds in one season)  Our game against Sumner (see below)  Nick Bates making his come back and scoring a “stylish” 50  Taking out the section title against Hornby without bowling a ball (or having to go to Denton Park).

But enough about that, and more about our game against Sumner…

We won the toss at the home of cricket and, going against the grain, we elected to bowl. In the third over, Matt Friedwald dropped their opener from the most simple of catches ever offered at first slip. Sumner went on to 12/0 and we were a little worried about what total ECSCC Annual Report 2011/12 Page 24

we could end up chasing. Somehow, we managed to get the upper hand and went on to roll Sumner for 13.

Matt Friedwald contributed with an accurate spell where he managed to find the edge (including the back of the bat) and rattle the wood-work consistently. He finished his spell with a handy 6/0.

We opted to put the chase in the safest pair of hands possible and sent in Vern Smith and Tom Music (making a long-awaited return to cricket). The return turned about to be short, with Tom scooping a wide one to short cover, departing for a golden duck. Needless to say, we chased down the total with plenty of time left to celebrate Tassie Matt’s feat.

On a final note Matt Friedwald managed to score 685 runs at 85.62 - with four hundreds (three on the trot), hit 46 sixes, and took 20 wickets at 5.8 runs...

PRESIDENTS BLUE

Once again it is a pleasure to have captained the Blues and to able to write the season report. The Blues continue to evolve and develop, with the varied mix of ages, backgrounds and abilities making for an entertaining and enjoyable season. Over the last few seasons this is easily the most diverse and interesting team I have been involved with.

The 2011/12 season was definitely a game, or a season, of two halves – no wins before Xmas followed by five wins after New Year. Tony Gray even managed his first Presidents win as skipper in my absence one Saturday. Although it was at times tight putting together a team, we had enough returning regular players to keep the team going in a stable and mostly competitive manner.

Performance wise, Bernard Rose kept up his run scoring efforts from previous seasons to average over 40. It was great to see Colin Viegas post his first ever ton, and he had a steady season averaging 27 in the opener’s role. A strong finish to the season saw Phil Mackie racking up several fifties to average over 30 with the bat. Chris Bradley, the third member of generation Y in the team, also got a couple of scores.

On the bowling front, overall, Tony Gray led the way with several performances that combined wicket-taking with parsimony. Bernard topped the wicket tally and Moni Anbu was his reliable self, until he (eventually) broke down at the end of the season. After being a regular and valued member in the team, Moni has now moved to Sydney, so best wishes to him. Fielding-wise, despite the Facebook pages questioning his prowess, Nicky Cottam somehow managed to take nine catches in the field.

Injuries prevented David Hearn, Rajeev Varma and Chris Stenton from playing many games, with Rajeev’s wicket taking ability being missed. Fortunately, Angus McLeod materialised out of nowhere one day looking for games, and he bolstered the slow bowling attack to form a good combination with Tony Gray.

Part time players Glen Senior, Steve McKey, James Sullivan and Elliot Taylor made good contributions with the bat. The real bonuses were the two Sri Lankan players who filled in a couple of times when their 20/20 team had the bye – Kasun with his leggies, and a devastating spell from Sudath that propelled us to one of our wins.

The first win of the season was the closest. Gleefully sent in by Hornby on a dubious Denton Park track, most of the top order struggled with the tennis ball bounce, getting themselves out caught off balls that would normally have been put to the fence. Forty-six for four after fourteen overs was not a great start. Alan Needs knuckled down to the task with a no-frills, head down approach that saw him bat for two-thirds of the innings. He received good support from Elliot Taylor, and especially Chris Bradley later on. Two scores in the forties from Alan and Chris helped Easts bat the 40 overs and get through to 166/8, putting us back in the game.

Our turn in the field saw a good start with early wickets being taken to have Hornby 40/3 after twelve overs. A steady period then ensued with neither side gaining the ascendency for some time. A couple of middle order wickets then had Easts looking likely until Hornby started to regather their composure. When Nicky’s part-time bowling dismissed their big hitting all-rounder, the game swung back to Easts at 123/6 off 31, but more steady batting from Hornby, culminating in the big over they were waiting for, saw them needing just three off two overs with two wickets in hand. ECSCC Annual Report 2011/12 Page 28

A crucial wicket off the last ball of the penultimate over from our strike bowler Bernard meant two were needed off the last over with one wicket left. It fell to Alan Needs to bowl it, a ring field set, Paul Cottam standing up, and the batsman not taking any chances. One dot, two dots, three dots, and things started to tighten up as it came down to the wire. A fourth dot really ratcheted the game up, then a hit out at the fifth ball saw the winning catch being taken! A one run win with one ball to spare! Terrific stuff.

The other handy acquisition we made during the season was Anne, Angus’s partner, who scored our book for us for the entirety of every match Angus played – much appreciated. Appreciation also goes to long serving team members like Neil Carey and Tony Blackler who helped out when they could for a game or two. Thanks also to Trevor Hayes for turning up in support and helping out with umpiring. Special thanks to Colin’s boys Neil and Shaun for playing a couple of games at short notice, and to Hayden Rose for his emergency fielding duties.

Some of the guys have moved out of the Easts area following the earthquakes but will still be playing for us. That’s great news. After a team dinner at Pomeroys we look forward to the start of the next season.

PRESIDENTS GOLD

Another great year for the Presidents Gold team, with 16 wins from 17 games and Champions again. That makes eight Championships over the last ten seasons, something that the team and the Club should be very proud of.

The season started with a loss to our nemesis of the last few years, LPW, but 16 straight wins followed, including a great win against them after Christmas, which set us up for the Championship, as they capitulated to some of the lower placed teams. The win against OBC, a leading team in recent years, just before the Christmas break was also a crunch game and capped the first half of the season. This game gained us the Challenge Shield which we retained. We really “turned up to play” as a team in certain key games this year and when pushed we “delivered the goods” which was great to be a part of.

Arfur with 40 wickets at 9.05 and 219 runs at 54.75 was our player of the year in a close call with Gibby who had another great year with 583 runs at 64.78 and 8 wickets at 24.88. There were lots of other notable individual contributions as the stats below show.

Thanks to the entire team for making my first year as Captain an enjoyable one, for freely offering advice during the games (lol), to Howard and Arfur for deputising for me when I was away and to Donn for being the glue that binds the team together – without his organisation I am not sure we would all still be together.

We always play hard on the field but have a great team spirit and always enjoy our after match drinks as a team and all of the banter that goes with it!!.

…and a few words from the Donn.

Thanks also to the players who filled the gaps when I was struggling to fill the team: Johnny Robson in particular made himself available several times when he had not wanted to play, and had planned to go and watch his son's game; Bob Neilson started several games but generally ended them in a wounded state; Duncan O’Keefe missed most of the season through injuring his knee in the first game against Saints; new boys, the 'energiser bunny' Paul McKenzie (ex-Sydenham, won his first Championship after 30+ years of trying) and Fili Lemisio filled gaps at crucial times; Bryce Nicholson, Johnny Salkeld and Scott Pawson made cameo appearances.

Apart from Arfur and Gibby’s stellar performances, Butch also had a top year with the bat. Tim and Wellsy are the best opening bowling combo in the grade and with H and Arfur to follow we have a superb attack. Our part time bowers also proved to be more than useful when called upon.

WOMEN’S SECTION REPORT

Well, where to start!

The Women’s Section has had a very mucky season, especially at the top!

The Premier Woman didn’t have much luck with the fragmented competition format provided by the CCA and this was largely responsible for us losing some very key club players. As a result, we had to disband our previously successful Division 1 team in order to ensure we could field one team and provide cricket for everyone at a good level. We ended up playing a mix of very limited club cricket plus a lot of Conference cricket when our rep players were away.

Nevertheless, many of the players shone, with a number making under age representative teams, domestic teams and the White Ferns. Congratulations to Hannah Malloch, Hayley Jensen, Jacinta Savage, Venetia Stoffers, Sara McGlashan, and Morna Nielsen for their selections in these teams.

The Youth team had a very successful season, with Olivia McGoverne being the stand-out player having a successful season with both bat and ball and scooping up numerous awards at the prize giving. This young side has a key role to play in the Club’s future as they move through the grades and we hope to see them take their cricket up to the next level in the coming season. Congratulations to Olivia McGoverne, Alyssa Millard, Daisy Tredinnick, Jess Davidson, Rachel Sloan, Jess Costello and Nani Sandberg for their selections for under age rep teams.

I look forward to seeing you all back in the coming season.

International Women’s Player of the Year

Sara McGlashan

In November last year, at the 2011 NZC Awards dinner, Sara McGlashan was presented with the International Women’s Player of the Year Award. This award is for the player in women’s international cricket whose performances have been the most meritorious. Sara won the award ahead of the other two nominees, Aimee Watkins and .

The programme had this to say about Sara:

“McGlashan has a reputation as one of the best fielders in women’s cricket and is responsible for numerous run-outs and direct hits. She is one of the most destructive batsmen when in full flight, having a Twenty20 strike-rate of 113 in the eight matches played. In 2010-11 she lifted her ICC batting ranking to eighth in the world.”

Congratulations, Sara. A fine achievement.

ECSCC Annual Report 2011/12 Page 37

DIVISION 2 GRADE

The girls tasted deserved success throughout the season and, benefiting from a full team each week, spent most of the year at the top of the table. They earned the respect of their opponents and It was gratifying to hear the positive and congratulatory messages from the two Old Colls and the LPW teams.

The team played 14 Youth Grade games winning 11, with one tied and only two losses, and one of those by only one run. The team came second in the championship, but certainly deserved to win it. The girls learnt a life-lesson that when you’re at the top of the table another team might take on a win at all costs strategy just to beat you.

After three seasons of struggling with numbers, an influx of new team members meant we had more than a full team. The girls played together extremely well. While everyone bowled (in one game we used 12 bowlers, in this 9-aside game), batting orders were arranged around the top run-scorers, while wicket-keeping was shared between some of the team as there was no specialist keeper. The girls would umpire with me and some learned how to score this season.

Alyssa Millard led the team as a captain should: challenging the coach’s tactics sometimes, and delegating some of the tasks, such as some of the field settings, to vice- captain Jess Davidson. Typically, the team would bat first and set defendable totals. Olivia McGoverne anchored many innings, scoring a season aggregate of 423 runs at 141, remarkable in a grade where you must retire at 50 runs. Her innings were 50*, 53*, 50*, 50*, 50*, 15, 50*, 53*, 4, 13 and 35*. Before she was out on 4, her average was 371. Olivia’s batting is based on technique, balance, shot-selection, timing and assertive running, including the odd dive into base.

Alyssa opened many innings, scoring a well-deserved 53* amidst three scores in the mid- 40’s. Jes Davidson’s return to form in consecutive games in 2012 saved the team from embarrassment in both games, forcing a tie with Old Colls Navy with her 39*, and the following week her 29* nearly won the game which was narrowly lost by one run. Then she followed those team-saving innings with consecutive fifties while captaining in Alyssa’s absence. Her innings were 1, 17, 6, 14, 7, 6, 2, 39*, 29*, 51*, 50* and 25*. Jess Costello also showed her class late in the season with her last two innings of 32 and 38. Jess typically plays with a slowish bat-speed, but with such perfect timing and soft hands it’s wonderful to watch.

This season the team again played one game at Burwood Park, only the second time the Youth team has played there in many years. They seem to play extremely well on their home turf. Daisy Tredinnick scored a well-constructed 53* in an opening century partnership with Olivia. Old Colls Gold may have lost by eight wickets, but they graciously attended the post-match speeches in the clubrooms. Daisy’s stats this season do not do justice to her worth to the team: she is your typical gutsy all-rounder.

Bowling was spear-headed by slow bowlers Rachel Sloan (most wickets at 12, and best average at 10.3), Ana Avia-O’Conner and Jes’s left-arm leg-spin at one end, and a range of medium pace at the other, usually Bethany Walters, Daisy, Jess, Alyssa or Olivia. We were spoilt for bowling choices and in almost all games the team would strike early and regularly. Seven of the bowlers’ economy rates were 3.4 or less. ECSCC Annual Report 2011/12 Page 38

The season’s most memorable moments would be: Isabella Stringer’s square-leg boundary at Burwood Park; Hannah Wills’ first ever boundaries (two fours in quick succession); Melissa Sloan’s catch at short mid-off from her sister’s bowling; Olivia’s pulled six at Polo; and, perhaps , Daisy’s genuine no-ball bouncer, an extremely rare feat at this level. The moment of the year would be Jes taking a catch at short mid-off, a drive going like a bullet at shin height.

Also pleasing was the improvement of Ana with both bat and the ball, and her fielding. Bethany had an interesting season, becoming a strike bowler with extremely good technique, but punctuated by spending most of the season at fine leg, and coming into bat at really awkward times, usually with few overs to go, sometimes in pressure situations when chasing a target. Nani Sandberg joined the team in 2012, which certainly added volume to the vocals in the field, resulting in run-outs.

We are thankful to the players who filled in for the team when some had commitments elsewhere in the last weeks of the season, particularly junior girl player of the year, Mikaela Dawson, who played two games for the team. From her five overs she bowled 3 for 20, including a caught and bowled. My thanks also to the players who stepped up and played for the Premiers when asked to.

Thanks to Garfield for his friendly and professional mid-week coaching of the team. It reflected in the girls’ improvement. But it is also pleasing that the girls sometimes took a lead in organising their own practices. It’s also pleasing to see that the girls are analysing their own bowling techniques and asking questions during practices.

Cricket gives the girls a safe respite from the stress of our post-earthquake recovery. The girls might not fully appreciate how cricket is helping them through, but their parents can see it clearly and are very thankful for it. Most if not all of the team will move up to 1st Grade for the 2012-13 season. I’m confident they will do well at that level.

JUNIOR REPORT

2011\2012 was again a season of ups and downs but it was a good one in the end.

Membership Membership this year comprised seventeen teams, but we did lose a girls’ team and had no premier boys’ team. Many teams performed very well and congratulations to those that won their grade.

Coaching Thanks to all the coaches and managers for the great job you do and I hope the club can count on your support again next season. Dave and I thank you for your willingness and enthusiasm because without you we would not have a junior programme.

Congratulations to Peter Costello being named Coach of the Year.

The girls received coaching from Wendy Fuller and thanks Wendy for the great job you did. John Grocott and Mark Jackson again showed their commitment with Have a Go and working with all our first timers. They are congratulated for their work in that area. Additional thanks to Neville Lyons, Garfield Charles and Steve Graham, for their assistance.

Grounds Thanks must also go to our groundsman Peter Dunell for the work he did with the Junior wickets. Burwood Park is a great spectacle when we have a number of junior sides playing there.

Sponsorship Many thanks to our four major sponsors for the player of the day vouchers and raffle prizes. These great sponsors were:  Cricket Express  O’Sheas Public House  Maharaja Restaurant  Subway

I hope the junior players and parents give them all the support they deserve. The Maharaja Restaurant also sponsored the new coaches shirts, so a special thanks to Raj Biala and his team.

Representative players Once again, many of our players trialled for various rep. teams and many were successful. Congratulations. To the players who missed out , just enjoy the experience and do it again next season.

Prize-giving The prize -giving was a great success with many players and parents attending. Thanks to all the people who put up their hand to make it a great afternoon.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Financially, this has been another challenging year for the club. Although we continue to receive a reasonable amount of Trust funding and grants to assist with our club programmes and activities, they are insufficient to cover all our costs after allowing for subscriptions. Accordingly, the club has recorded another loss for the year, the fifth in six years, and this is a major concern. However, cash resources are reasonable at balance date due to unspent funding carried forward. These funds were received towards the end of the financial year for future activities.

The loss for the year, subject to audit at the time of writing, is $8.668 compared to a loss of $22,503 in the previous year. The “improved” position is mainly due to a reduction in costs. Income for the year is similar to 2011 with subs slightly lower and fundraising and grants up. Income received last year from the National Bank Super Camp and National Club championships are not repeated this year.

On the expenditure side, there are a number of reductions as the committee endeavoured to balance the budget. Gear usage, mainly balls, in particular was well down and pavilion maintenance is also well down. The latter is due to the special hire of the pavilion to Hawkins for earthquake recovery work but will not continue. The arrangements regarding this are under discussion at the time of writing and it appears the final outcome will depend on the funding available for this purpose. Depreciation is reducing as the respective assets reduce in value.

The statement of financial position clearly sets out the situation as at balance date. There are funds in the bank but liabilities, including unspent grants, exceed this amount. A GST recovery was due and inventories are up on last year. The special funds are on deposit at Cavell Leitch and earn a small amount of interest. Details are shown in the notes. Overall, we have managed well in difficult circumstances and uncertain times but the future is not assured unless we can return to a small surplus position. It looks like another challenging year for the club ahead.

The unaudited accounts of Shirley Sports Club Ltd are also included in the Annual Report.

In conclusion, our thanks to the gaming trusts and Canterbury Cricket Association for their support as set out in the notes. Also, to Cricket Express and Andy Innes for their continued sponsorship. My thanks also to club members for their assistance during the year, particularly Harry Burson, Donn Leckie and Henk Stoffers for the work they do collecting subs and helping with other matters.

7 PAVILION REDEVELOPMENT & SHIRLEY SPORTS CLUB LIMITED

The Club entered into a Heads of Agreement and Joint Venture Agreement with the Shirley Rugby Football Club Inc. for the redevelopment of the existing pavilion in 2004. The project commenced in March 2005 and was completed in November 2005. Under the agreement, the pavilion is managed by the Shirley Sports Club Limited, a non-profit company established for this purpose. Each Club has equal shareholding and appoints three Directors. Under the agreement, “ownership” of the pavilion passed to the company at an agreed value and a notional gain on sale resulted. This was treated as an increase in member’s funds in the 2006 year. At balance date advances made by the Club to Shirley Sports Club Limited totalled $276,660 (last year $276,660).

SHIRLEY SPORTS CLUB LTD. (SSCL)

With the Westpac loan now paid off we are looking to direct funding into other areas e.g. the possibility of employing a manager for both the Sports Club and shareholder clubs, to help with the administration and running of our respective organisations.

The remaining loan outstanding is to the Christchurch City Council with the balance owing at 31 May 2012 being $30,000. We are paying this back at the rate of $10,000 per annum.

Obtaining funding however is becoming harder in the current environment and this year has been particularly difficult. Our thanks go to Howard Morel for the time and energy he commits to this.

A proposal to purchase the assets of the adjacent Burwood Bowling Club is being investigated by the Board. We are still waiting on a response from their insurance company regarding possible purchase scenarios and costs. The Board will then report back to the shareholder clubs before proceeding any further.

A rent review for the shareholder clubs has also been undertaken by the Board and presented to the clubs for their comment. The Rugby Club has been funding the bulk of the rent to date, in line with the formula agreed on between the shareholder clubs at the start of the development, whereby the Rugby Club was required to cover any increased costs incurred during the project hence the Westpac loan. The new rental agreements will share the ongoing costs more evenly between the two clubs.

Maintenance is also an important issue that needs addressing. The Board spent $16,000 last year on re upholstering the clubroom chairs with a much more attractive and resilient fabric. We have also been very fortunate that the clubrooms did not suffer major damage as a result of the earthquakes. A claim is presently being pursued to cover the repairs required.

Thanks to my fellow Board members Peter Dow, John Grocott and Steve Barry from the Cricket Club and Stew Mitchell and Steve Clark from the Rugby Club and Shona Milne our Secretary. Stewart Mitchell has been appointed the Chairman of the Canterbury Rugby Union and so is standing down after contributing nine very valuable years on the Sports Club Board.
