PRESIDENTS REPORT

It again gives me considerable pride and pleasure to record another satisfactory season in 2012 -2013. Not one of our greatest but still competitive in all grades. With the earthquakes behind us, we have, as usual, given it our best shot.

As you may be aware, we didn’t win any major CCA club awards this year but there were many good performances and some special highlights as noted further on in the report. Congratulations to all teams and individuals for their efforts and achievements during the season. There was a long list of awards presented at our prize-giving in April. Special congratulations to Jason Pawson (JP) for his performances during the year and other personal milestones. Both he and Ryan Burson have indicated retirement is pending. They have been stalwarts for the club and have given great service to the club over a long period.

There were other notable individual highlights: Tim Johnston was selected for Canterbury; Sara McGlashan and Morna Neilsen for the White Ferns (playing with distinction at the World Cup in India); Jacinta Savage and Hayley Jensen for Canterbury; Leo Carter and Ken McClure for NZ Under 19. Our warm congratulations to these players and to all other club members, including juniors, who made representative teams this season. We are proud of their efforts.

Our Junior programme continues under the leadership of Henk Stoffers, Dave Teale and the Junior committee. Our thanks to Henk and Dave for their efforts and all those who helped during the season including committee members, coaches and team managers. Also congratulations to all those who were selected for Canterbury Junior Rep teams. Our Junior award function at the end of the season was again a great success. There was a good attendance and lots of potential on display. A fitting end to the season. The junior programme is important in the progress and development of the game both for the club and the wider community.

Our senior award function in April was another success with a good attendance. It is a great way to acknowledge club performances for the season. Warm congratulations to all who received awards and trophies. It was a particular pleasure to award the President’s trophy to Henk Stoffers for his sterling contribution to our Junior Programme over the last few years. He has served the club well in this capacity. His energy and enthusiasm is unbounded. Well done Henk. Fully deserved.

Finally, thanks to all who have helped in the success of our club during the season. In particular, we appreciate the support of our sponsors and funding received from gaming trusts to assist with operating costs. Our management committee led by Peter Dow, with support from Vice President Howard Morel and Secretary Jeff Cope continues to look after administration. Unfortunately, we haven’t found a new Treasurer and I am looking after these duties in the meantime. Other major contributions include the Junior section led by Henk Stoffers (as mentioned), our coaching team led by Neville Lyons, our team captains and managers and our pitch preparer, Peter Dunell. All have made a valuable contribution. On the social side, Steve Saunders for catering, our bar staff and all parents and supporters for their assistance and support when necessary. Everyone has played a valuable part in the life of our club. We are fortunate to be well served by many individuals dedicated to the success of our Club. Long may this continue.

ECSCC Annual Report 2012/13 Page 6

Once again a new season is approaching. There will be changes and challenges ahead both on the playing field and in administration. Our senior men will be keen to consolidate and improve on last year’s results. The retirement of some old hands will provide opportunities for the younger brigade. We look forward to some good performances and wish them well.

Women’s cricket has some issues – the limited number of senior teams being the main one and we may have lost some players. We hope a satisfactory programme will be arranged and the girls will perform well.

We also need to maintain our lower grade teams to provide a good base for the senior teams. We have a good programme so hopefully this will attract new players.

Juniors are another area where changes could occur. It will be interesting to see the enrolments this coming season. There are no simple solutions and we must work hard to maintain our club at top level.

The club has a great spirit and I hope all members will make a contribution to the life of the club and also enjoy the wonderful game of cricket in the coming season. We have good facilities and a good programme in place. We must continue to strive to be the pre- eminent cricket club in Christchurch. I look forward to watching your progress and wish you all the best for the season ahead.

COACHING AND SELECTION

Men’s Grades

Selectors Premier /2A grades: Captains & Nev. Lyons (Nick Bates part season) 3A grade: Captain

Selection: During the early part of the season the selection panel lost Convener Nick Bates who stood down for personal reasons and, as a result, the Coach and two captains attended to this task each week. I believe it worked quite well. Our aim was to put the best balanced teams on the field each week, with players having to earn their positions. We also selected the two NZ U19 players in the Premiers after Xmas, in order to give them the senior experience for the 2013/14 season.

Two or three players in the 2nd team were close to senior selection during the year - but for them to cement a place, then consistency is the key, This is what we were looking for. A great example was Ben Hanham who forced his way into the senior team following a number of very good consistent performances. Tim Hampton is another young player with senior experience who scored two very good centuries for 2nd grade and has shown much promise.

Practices: Practices during the year were held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These were well attended, with around six players only available to train one night due to work commitments. Thursday nights were usually a full attendance of the 25 plus players in the squad and we required all practice nets, which made it impossible to allocate nets to other club teams on that night. The practice decks and the Burwood main cricket block were excellent pre-Xmas but in January, February and March they became very inconsistent. The club needs to address this issue if we want to develop consistency in our batting.

Premier Grade

Pre-Season: The 2012/13 season started with the captain Tim Papps and coach Nev Lyons reviewing a number of factors that would establish the base for our premier and 2nd grade teams for the coming year. These included: . Make-up of the new senior team and senior squad. . Player availability, given that a number of players were playing overseas at the start of the season. . Captaincy, as Tim would be away for some early games. Vice-captain for early games D Lyons. . Vision and season’s goals for the teams and squad. . A weekend camp pre-season to discuss protocols and goals for the senior squad. [This was held over a week-end at Hanmer Springs and was well attended.] . Winter pre-season training at CCA, starting first week of August to the last week of September. [Due to many players being away in August we invited the 3rd team to the club indoor training and overall attendance was excellent with two or three new members to the club arriving.]

ECSCC Annual Report 2012/13 Page 11

ODI’S: There was a massive improvement from last season’s performances, with the players moving forward in all the skill areas that are required for this format. The older players fronted up with bat and ball and younger players performed well, but are just lacking that experience which is needed to achieve the ultimate outcome.

The team missed Tim Papps and Ryan Burson in the early games, but the development of DJ as fill in captain and the progress shown by one or two younger players in the team was very pleasing. We had our opportunities to make the final but only the one-per- centers let us down. Pressure is the key at important moments in some games and we are very close to getting this correct. As players develop their self-belief, then we will achieve the required outcome. A great effort by the team

Twenty/20: This year was our best result since this game was introduced to senior club cricket with Easts making the final. All the early games were captained by DJ. Ben Hanham went on to win the CCA Twenty20 player of the tournament which was an excellent result. Ben is now becoming a regular player for the senior team. This competition allowed Tim and me a chance to give the younger players in the squad an opportunity to play at this higher level. A pleasing result by the team but out-played in the final. Nevertheless, another great effort.

Two-Dayers: Going into the last couple of games we had a very good chance of winning this trophy. However, it wasn’t to be and we ended up finishing third. There were many great moments throughout the competition, with some outstanding individual performances.

I believe that it was only a few lapses in a couple of the games that kept us from getting the chocolates. While this was disappointing it highlights the fact that these one-per - centers were our down fall. Developing experience and self-belief is the key, as the talent is there in all the players. This will develop over time. This competition is the hardest to win with many teams being very close in skill. It only requires a special performance from one or two players, backed by their team mates, to get over the line.

Overall: An excellent season for this this new look, young team. The stats. record three of the senior players getting over 600 runs each, which was outstanding. The batting now only needs the younger players to consistently contribute, and then batting will be a really strong component of the 2013-14 team. The stats also show that three of our senior bowlers took 40 plus wickets each, which was again outstanding. Two of these players have now retired and they will be missed. While this is an area we are going to have to work very hard at next season, I believe we have the bowling talent in the squad to cover their departures. We will look forward to this challenge next season.

Four of our players were selected in the CCA club team of the year, and, if you add in the talents of Tim Papps, this showed we had a very completive batting and bowling line up in all three forms of the game.

Next season we will need to become more of a unit, playing for each other. However, with TP, DJ, Jed, Tealo, CS and TJ providing an experienced core, alongside a developing group of younger players, I expect us to have a very competitive side. Competition for places will be strong as three or four players in the second team have shown much promise and are on the fringes of playing senior cricket.

ECSCC Annual Report 2012/13 Page 12

2nd Grade Team

This team had an excellent season and they were well lead by Chris Batchelor who is emerging as a very good future leader and senior player. We were fortunate that the side had surplus players available most weeks as this gave us cover for the rep players, injuries and other absences, which was a change from the last two seasons.

Like the Premiers, the team also had chances to win grade trophies in the three different formats. The highlight for me is the development of the different talents and disciplines the younger players have and this is very encouraging for the future of East Christchurch Shirley cricket Club. Developing this base further will be a challenge for the club.

Positives

We now have a large squad of young talent, a position we haven’t been in over the last two years. This will give the Club an excellent foundation to build on and to start achieving those results we need each week, if we are to start taking home the silver.

Congratulations to Tim Johnston, Leo Carter and Ken McClure on their representative selections (Tim a Wizard: Leo and Ken in both the Canterbury and NZ U19 teams).Tim Johnston will, I believe, be a real key to helping us achieve our desired outcomes in the coming years. His challenge will be to start dominating the bat at club cricket level with his spin bowling.

The development of a new and strong leadership group will be the challenge for the coaches, alongside building up the level of playing experience. Commitment by all the players, upgrading individual’s skill bases and, most of all, respecting each other on and off the field will be the keys for success. All this equates to a lot of hard work.

Other club teams

It was great to see the Hooters team train every Wednesday night and work exceptionally hard. This nearly rewarded them with some silverware which was up for grabs on the last game of the season. There are many good quality players in this team, and well done boys.

The Twenty/20 team also trained on Wednesdays and performed much better than last season. I will be looking forward to see further improvement by this team in the coming season.

Women’s Grades

The nature of the Women’s grade competition is dictated by the small number of players available in Christchurch and when the representative players are away from their club teams the competitions are impacted in a massive way. The Easts teams are very young but they have huge talent which will be a positive for the coming years.

Coaching club coaches this year was disappointing, especially after a fantastic turnout on the first night when I believe every one left with a better knowledge of the skills required to pass on to their junior teams. The second night turnout was poor and, as a result, a number of coaches were a bit short on the batting skills needed to pass on to their young players. We need to run these sessions earlier at the beginning of the season and I will be discussing this with the junior committee. ECSCC Annual Report 2012/13 Page 13

Two club legends retire: Ryan Burson and Jason Pawson played their last games for the Easts senior team during the season, joining Scott Pawson who retired two seasons ago. These three players have been the super-glue of our squad for many years and it was a real privilege to coach them and have them as part of our many successful Christchurch and NZ tournaments. Ryan and Jason took about 80 wickets between them last season and I can’t wait to see who amongst the 2013/14 East bowlers are going to put up their hand and take their places. I know these stalwarts are not lost to this great game and will be continuing to contribute in some way. I wish you both the very best.

Last Say: Many thanks to our loyal supporters who turn up for each game. Their support, along with the backing provided by the club committee every year, is appreciated and has a huge impact on our team and club culture. Also thanks to the club’s grounds contractor, Batesie, and Garfield who helps with the coaching, covering women, club coaches and the senior squad with me.

And, last but not least, my thanks to captain Tim Papps for his efforts and input during the season

PREMIER GRADE

The 2012/2013 season was another stepping stone on our way back to Senior Club Cricket dominance. Although we came close, we didn’t secure any silverware: but the signs are there that we have a good team moving forward.

Our personnel stocks were looking better this season with the return of an East Shirley stalwart in the form of Ryan Burson and we also managed to secure the services of an Old Boy by the name of Leighton Burtt, who was a great addition to the club both on and off the field. Further to this we had the services of Ken McClure full time and also later in the season Leo Carter joined the senior team after finishing at St Andrews. With these new and existing players the season was looking bright.

The one day campaign is something that we targeted this year due to our failure last year to make the semi-finals. We started the competition well and were deserved of our fourth position after round robin play. A couple of injuries in the mid part of this competition ,and a couple of ‘off’ days, meant we could have placed higher but ,all in all, we were pleased to make the semi-finals.

We drew Old Boys in the semi-final and this was always going to be a tough game On a beautiful day, we lost the toss and Old Boys batted and compiled 270 runs. This was a few more than we would have liked but we felt we could chase this down. The team was buoyant at half time as we relaxed in our ‘flash’ changing rooms at Elmwood Park. We started well but lost regular wickets and in the end came up about 30 runs short. I thought that the character the team showed in chasing the large target was fantastic. It was a great experience for some of the young boys to play finals cricket and this will serve them well for future competitions.

Notable performers in the one-day campaign were: Hamish Teale, who averaged just under 30 and looked more and more comfortable at the crease as the season went on; and, bowling-wise , Jason Pawson who was a standout as usual with 22 wickets at an average of 7.8 and only conceded 2.1 runs per over.

The Twenty/20 game has never been an East Shirley specialty but this year we planned to rectify this and did so by making the final. We had a couple of young players stand up and show that they were capable of playing at this level and, although we once again fell short on the big stage, the boys can be proud of their achievements. We won two of our three pool games but failed to score enough runs in the final, playing on the new surface at Hagley Park. Notable performers in the Twenty/20 were Ben Hanham who was awarded the Twenty/20 Player of the Year trophy. He scored 160 runs and was only dismissed once. He was the backbone of our campaign and was ably assisted by Hamish Teale with the bat and Ryan Burson with the ball.

The major competition of the season in my eyes and the one that is most coveted by the clubs is the Two-day Competition. I believed that this year was a great chance for us to knuckle down and have a strong campaign.

We started well and half-way through we were looking good for a strong finish. Although we finished third, I felt we were only one day of good cricket away from coming first. A couple of lapses at critical moments cost us in the end. Some good cricket was played. and the number of pleasing performances augur well for the future. These good ECSCC Annual Report 2012/13 Page 16

performances plus a couple of controversial moments that will go down in East Shirley folklore, made for a memorable and enjoyable campaign. We finished on a high note with a last over victory over Marist, and this is something we can take into this coming season.

Notable performers in the two-day competition were DJ and Ham Teale who both contributing well with the bat. With the ball, Jed Roberts was a standout taking 30 scalps at an average of 12.33.

Special mention must go to two players who have served the club so well over the past 15 year:  Ryan Burson is the club’s highest -taker and will probably never be passed. He has played with passion and heart for many years and, personally, I will miss his input into the team. He was always the go-to man for the East Shirley bowling attack and will be sorely missed. Bursey, enjoy retirement. You deserve a rest after all your service.  Jason Pawson, a pleasure to play with and, I’m guessing, a ______to play against. The greatest medium pacer of the last 15 years in senior cricket, JP had the nack of making things happen and always had something to say to keep the batsman honest. A true gentleman of the game who always played with his heart on his sleeve. Good luck in retirement “Rigger’ and don’t be a stranger.

Thanks for all of the support over the season from the usual suspects. Also to Nev for his hard work off the field and usual Nevism’s that keep the boys entertained. I apologise for no silverware but next year is looking good. With the whole team another season wiser, it is only a matter of time before we are again back at the top where we belong.

Here’s Cheers.

Two Club Stalwarts Retire

The final game of the season was a sad one for the club: two of our most long-serving and successful bowling stalwarts, Jason Pawson and Ryan Burson, decided that now was the right time to bow out of senior cricket. Both have fashioned impressive careers with the club and have been major contributors to the Premier team’s great run of successes over the last 15 seasons.

Ryan made his senior debut in 1996/97 and Jason followed the year after. Since then they have been members of sides that have dominated the Christchurch club cricket scene. Since that memorable two-day championship victory in 1998/99, a triumph that we’d been waiting 56 seasons for, they have been members of successful teams that have gone on to win a further four two-day championships and six one-day championships, capping of the latter by winning the National Club Cricket Championship in Auckland twice. For all of these 15 seasons, if the team wasn’t actually taking out a championship, it was close to it, always in with a chance. Both Jason and Ryan made major contributions to this remarkable run.

Ryan played a combined 205 Cup and Trophy matches for the seniors and is the club’s leading wicket taker with a staggering 529 wickets at 15.38, including 15 five wicket bags. His 366 two-day wickets are the most of any of the current Christchurch Premier players by a large margin; his 163 one-day wicket puts him third on the all-time list of club players in one-day cricket.

Ryan made his first class Canterbury debut in 1997/98, having played for the NZ U19 side in 1996. For Canterbury, he played 75 first class and one-day matches taking a total of 104 wickets.

Jason played a total of 232 club matches, and amassed 443 club wickets, 273 in two-day games and 170 in one- day, which places him third in the list of the club’s all-time wicket takers. His 170 one-day wickets stands as a record in Christchurch club one-day cricket.

But both won’t be remembered just for their bowling exploits, great as they are. They will also be remembered for the way they played the game, hard but very fair. Both played in the true “spirit of the game” and it is no surprise that both have been frequent recipients of CCA sportsmanship awards, either individually or as members of winning teams. Indeed, during their period in senior cricket, the side has had a virtual stranglehold on the Hadlee Trophy.

2A GRADE

The 2012/2013 cricket season for the East Shirley Second Grade side started off promising ly with a convincing win over -Woolston. In this first game of the o ne-day competition, two centuries were scored: one by Tim Hampton and, the other, an exhilarating 151 not out by veteran opener Mitch Baird. Results in the following weeks in th is competition were also positive, with wins over St Albans and Old Boys-Collegians which saw us make it into the semi-finals against Marist-Harewood. Sadly, our run of good performances ended here and we didn’t perform to our full potential, being comfortably beaten by an experienced Marist-Harewood side.

The Twenty/20 competition held at Burnside Park over the Christmas and New Year period was always going to be difficult with a number of regular players missing over the holiday period. As a result, we ended up losing a couple of early games against Burnside and Marist-Harewood. However, with the addition of some young blood in the New Year we bounced back well with wins over LPW and Sydenham. Unfortunately, a tough loss to Riccarton saw us unable to progress to the next stage of the competition.

The two-day competition was hotly contested this year with three teams having the opportunity to take the title going into the last three weeks of the season. These teams were Marist-Harewood, Lancaster Park-Woolston and us, with the eventual winner being Lancaster Park-Woolston.

During the two-day competition we saw some outstanding individual performances. Tim Hampton’s second century of the season, a well-made 105 against Sydenham, was a major highlight. Another was Jared van Eyk Menkman’s 11 wickets in the match against Burnside on Burwood 1, with figures of 5/47 in the first innings and 6/42 in the second. “Ike” was a massive part of our team this year with a big ticker and was often being required to bowl big spells. He was always willing to give 110% to the team whenever we needed a spark.

Sadly, this year we have had to deal with several experienced veteran team members not being available in the New Year period due to various commitments. It was with the greatest regret that we had to say goodbye to Mitch Baird who had to move to Wellington due to a new job opportunity. As well as this, we haven’t been able to reap the benefits of having the regular services of experienced cricketers Michael Vanner and Captain Matthew Goode. Michael couldn’t play as often as we had wished because of the demands of studying towards becoming a qualified lawyer. Matthew and his partner Catherine were pleased to announce the arrival of their young son Louis, which understandably saw him busy being a new Dad. We wish these three all the best of luck in their future endeavours.

On the flipside of losing three key experienced members of our team, we also gained three new players: Jordan Mason, Tom Dixon and Jeremy Duncan. Jordan, who moved down from Wellington for work reasons, has shown he is a real stroke-maker with the bat and is also an asset in the field. Tom and Jeremy came straight out of high school, from Shirley Boys High and Christ’s College respectfully. Tom is a classy left arm spinner who can really boom it with the bat and ended up getting his first five wicket bag for the club against Sydenham this year. Jeremy Duncan is a very talented left hand bat who scored regularly for us and ended up making half centuries against Marist-Harewood, Lancaster Park- Woolston and Burnside, as well as a gutsy 46 against Riccarton.

ECSCC Annual Report 2012/13 Page 23

A number of the regular contributors to our team over the past two or three seasons again performed commendably this season: this included Karl Smith, Jared Cookson, William Otte, Kyle Knowles, Hayden Clarke and Kieran Foote. Kyle Knowles’ control of the new ball was exceptional once again, as it is year-in year-out, and Hayden Clarke’s swing bowling caused many accomplished batsmen to look like bunnies. Karl “Pewy” Smith was solid at the top of the order, which resulted in some important scores in tough situations. Jared Cookson is a classy batsman who shows maturity beyond his years, as well as being a great leader on the field and in the changing room. William Otte bowled courageously, often through pain, and had that certain “X factor” needed to take crucial wickets when we needed them most. Kieran Foote showed more experience this year and is a valuable member to our team: his tidy glove work makes him our premier wicket keeper and he is also a very good top-middle order left hand bat. (Just don’t forget to order him his favourite Supreme Pizza at the team break up.)

Outstanding performances on the pitch were often matched by regular after match functions at local Christchurch hotspots the Cargo bar, the Salmon Sanctuary and Spagalimis Church Corner. Some of the main events included a two-player Beer Pong Tournament, a re-enactment of the popular “Harlem Shake” music video and a golf day held at the prestigious Ferrymead Golf and Country Club. These were important events in this summer’s cricket calendar as they promoted a positive culture within the team environment which resulted in an enjoyable atmosphere on the park and in the changing room.

Thank you to all the players and supporters for making it an enjoyable and rewarding cricket season.

3A GRADE

The 3A season had far more highlights than lowlights. Unfortunately the lowlight was a beauty. We were consistently the best team in the competition, qualified second in pool- play, qualified top in the second section for the top four teams, then lost the final. Badly.

The 3A grade features five decent teams, a couple of shockers and a couple who, if they practice really hard all off season, will still not be good enough to be shockers.

After 13 games of the season, we’d had 10 wins, a no-result, a tie and a solitary loss - and we should have won the game we lost. We scored 202-6 from our 40 overs against Old Boys-Collegians and they stumbled to drinks (20 overs) at 80-8. Then came their No 10 – he opened later in the season. In fairness, he gave us good warning he could bat, he launched the first all he faced for a huge six. He hit a few more, all around the ground and scored 80-odd off about 30 balls. We eventually got him out, but their 10 and 11 scored the last 10 or so runs with PLENTY of help from their umpires. We had two very good LBW shouts, not only turned down but laughed at, and a clear stumping denied. So we lost by one wicket, but tapped that one into the memory banks for next time.

Our next loss – we only had three all season – was to our friendly rivals, the Predators, a name they call their one-team cricket club and a name many of them have earned. They defaulted to us in an early round and then beat us in a final over thriller the second time. We only scored 121-8 on a very tough away deck at some park in Sydenham we all had to look up. They got home in the final over, seven down.

So we cruised through to the top four where we had two more wins: a second win of the season against the OBC team and a third of the season against the Heathcote WTCs. We’re not sure what the C stands for, but W and T are White Trash and they’re a team who threatened Mr Murray Season with “I’ll see you in the carpark after”. Classy.

We then had a meaningless game against the Predators before the final ( which would also be against the Predators). In this penultimate game, we again struggled with the bat and only managed 143, losing our last wicket off the last ball. They were cruising before a late rally by the good guys earned us a morale-boosting one run win. One highlight of that day was Tim Williams winning a dollar by betting Matt Richens would get out for a golden. Nice one Timmy.

So we went into the final with a bit of confidence and after two dodgy away decks, we arrived at Burwood looking forward to taking them on on a decent pitch. It teamed down that week and we got mud!

They batted first and made the mud look okay, scoring 214-7. We’d chased down higher scores on worse decks this season and had scored well more than that on Burwood 3 on numerous occasions. What happened next really wasn’t great. Richie the Skipper Papps had broken his thumb in the field so we were already one down and then we had a bad start losing our two top run scorers, Jason Riach and Seaton. Fear not, we still had 2011- 2012 people’s champion, Matt Friedwald. That was until Richens sold him down the river in one of those “yes-no-sorry-really sorry-first round on me” moments. Richens then chipped out straight away. Top stuff. We were then rolled for 99 in what really was a disappointing display.

ECSCC Annual Report 2012/13 Page 27

So we finished second, yet, out of respect to all Hooters teams that went ahead of us, we celebrated as though we’d we won.

Highlights of the year included: the batting of Ozzie Matt Friedwald, MurraySeaton and Jason Riach: the bowling of Rob Leys, Gareth Sanders and, as much as it pains me to say it, Richie Papps; and Tim Williams' fielding. Tim is basically held together by the tar in his body from years of smoking, a couple of Band-aids and last year's chewing gum, but he held onto 12 catches and picked up three run-outs and was Mr Reliable in the field.

Ozzie Matt, Jason Riach and Mr Murray Seaton scored a whopping 1830 runs between them. Ozzie chipped in with 562 including five 50s at an average of 31.2; Boz Riach contributed 587 runs, with two 50s and the side's only hundred, a typically pretty 114no; while Mr Murray Seaton won our batting gong. Muz scored 681 runs, he passed 50 six times, had a high score of 88 and averaged a classy 40.1.

Rob Dipper Leys led the wicket taking with 31 @15.2 while Gareth Sanders missed the end of the season but still took 28 scalps at the brilliant average of 9.7. Ozzie Matt and Richie Papps took 27 apiece while Jase Riach and James Ogier took 19.

There were plenty of others that contributed and some that just looked pretty - but that’s our side.

Our supporters were - again – phenomenal, so thank you to all the girls and Phil for that – we actually could do it without you, but we choose not. You’re the best and easily the best WAGS group in the competition.

Again Burwood had the best decks and Easts is the best club to play at. It would just be nice to see a few more of you back there. As much as we try, Hooters can’t prop the bar up every season.

PRESIDENTS BLUE

For the fourth season now, it is a pleasure to have captained the team and to be able to write the season report. The varied mix of ages, backgrounds and abilities makes for a diverse and interesting team.

The 2012/13 season was a real mixed bag for us. Sometimes competitive, sometimes not, some players not returning, some new arrivals, some pleasant teams to play, some very much not, and some wins to keep most of us enthused. Some satisfying wins, some close but no cigar games, some galling losses, and some unpredictable on field antics meant for a bit of a rollercoaster season. It was kind of philosophical and kind of entertaining wondering what was going to happen next.

Performance wise, Nick Cottam and Bernard Rose were by far the dominant run scorers, being the only two to average over 30 (and 20 for that matter). Well done to Nick for notching his maiden century. Fifties to Kasun Dandeniya and Rajeev Varma were the other highlights as the batsmen found it harder going this season against some stronger teams. Sudath Wijewardene also got some runs toward the end of the season to show some capability.

There were several contributors on the bowling front that had a good number of regulars to select from. Angus McLeod claimed 25 wickets, Tony Gray was the most economical as usual, and Rajeev was a dependable option. Kasun offered variety with his leg breaks, claiming some wickets, and Brian Cairns proved reliable. The top overall effort was a match-winning fifty and five wicket bag from Rajeev in one of our wins over Hornby.

Fielding wise, the catching and out cricket was the best for some time, with Chris Bradley standing out (hopefully he’ll recover quickly from a pending knee op). Of the other regulars, Paul Cottam and David Hearn had their moment seeing the side home in a tighter than expected run chase against the Hospital team.

It was good to have other club members help out when we were short, including a couple of the Hooters guys who found out how hard this grade is, with ‘Chook’ missing several weeks after top edging one on to the scone (sorry to his skip for that).

Our appreciation to Anne, Angus’s partner, who scored our book for us for the entirety of every match Angus played. Thanks also to Trevor Hayes for turning up in support and helping out with umpiring. Special thanks to Colin’s lad Neil playing a couple of games at short notice, and to Hayden Rose for his emergency fielding duties.

Some of the guys have moved out of the Easts area following the earthquakes and have continued playing for us, including signing up for next season. That’s great news. After a team dinner at Himalayas we look forward to the start of the next season.

PRESIDENTS GOLD

2012/2013 was a tough year for the Presidents Gold team.

A short summary of the season would record:  the difficulty we had at times getting eleven players on the park;  a slow start, with a few losses to teams that ultimately finished towards the bottom of the table;

 close games against some of the better teams that, in the past, would have gone our way but did not this year; and  individual performances by most of the team that at times were not up to the same standards we have set for ourselves in the past.

Having said all that, we are all getting older while much of our opposition is getting younger and we still finished a creditable third.

With the bat, Gibby stood out again with 527 runs at 44 and new recruit Alan Hemmingway a.k.a Ernie scored 354 at 71. Others chimed in from time to time but not nearly often enough when really needed.

Arfur stood out again with the ball, taking 37 wickets at 11 apiece (with a best of 6 for 1 !), with Howard snaring 28 wickets at 11 apiece as well. They were well supported by Wellsy and Gibby taking 19 each.

The team culture remained one of play hard on and off the field and the after-match drinks were always a highlight even when we were "towelled" up on a couple of occasions.

Two special mentions. First, for Brando who was selected as player-of-the-year. Brando produced some good knocks and always kept well when deputising for Stevie Sharman. His humour and relaxed style is great for the team. Second, to Donn who continues to "manage" us, if that is in fact possible, and remains the glue that binds it all together.

Good luck to Tim who takes over as skipper next season. Good luck Tim - you will never be short of advice, lol..... Thanks guys for all your support as Skipper over the last two years (especially you Nivey!). I'm looking forward to getting lost in the outfield somewhere!

Bring on another title in 2013/2014.

PREMIER GRADE

The 2012/2013 season was a tough one for the Premier Women this year.

Our first big challenge was trying to field a full team. With players coming and going each week, it has been a full time job for Megan Harkerss and Morna Nielsen to sort out who is playing and who isn’t. Thanks so much for all your hard work this season!

With a few regular players missing this season it was a great opportunity for Olivia McGoverne, Alyssa Millard, Daisy Tredinnick, Jess Davidson, Venetia Stoffers and Jess Costello to step up and join us in the Premier Grade. Although being very nervous each week, the girls didn’t look out of place at all and slotted in very nicely to our team, making the most of the opportunities that came their way. Olivia scored two half centuries and was always the one to go to if we needed a wicket. Alyssa improved a truck load with her bowling throughout the season and also chipped in with the bat scoring a high of 29*. Daisy, Jess D, Venetia and Jess C all had limited opportunities but took their chances when they came along, racking up wickets and runs for the team and also keeping wickets for us when we were in need.

White Ferns Sara McGlashan and Morna Nielsen were unfortunately unavailable for most games due to New Zealand commitments but when they were playing they really did show their class and talent, with both bat and ball. Playing four games this year, Sara scored over 50 runs in each game with a highest score of 83 and an average of 73. Morna was outstanding with the ball with a best of 4/48 at an average of 12.8. She also belted 73 runs, including ten 4’s and a 6 against LPW.

Jacinta Savage led the wicket tally, taking 12 scalps this season. She also developed a new role of opening the batting and did well, making a couple of 40’s. Her opening partner Hayley Jensen had a good season with the bat scoring a couple of hundreds for the team and knocked off the bails a few times with the ball.

Megan Harkerss bowled magnificently against LPW in a very tense game (we won), ending with figures of 7 for 28 off 9 overs. Gina Aldersley bowled well, with a best spell of 5/27, and ended up with ten wickets this season. Hannah Malloch, who is currently studying in Otago, popped up for three games. While she was here, she picked up a total of seven wickets, her best being 4/24 against OBCC. Thank you to Christine Wilson, Sam Case and Sandy Clark for filling in this season, this was much appreciated. Also thanks to coaches Garfield, Steve and Nev for your time, effort and knowledge that you put into us this season!

Congratulations to all the girls who made rep teams this year.

And a special mention to Sara McGlashan, who will not be rejoining us next season. Thank-you for the countless time and effort you have put into the club over the years. You will be sorely missed at East Shirley. Good luck for your new job up in Auckland and we all hope you will come back and visit us here and maybe fill in sometime!

That’s it from me, Congratulations to everyone who achieved their goals this season and may next season bring on big and better things.

Hayley Jensen

ECSCC Annual Report 2012/13 Page 37

Note from the editor:

Hayley has been rather modest regarding her own performances this season. She had a great season, leading the batting aggregates with a total of 439 runs at an average of 63. Included were two centuries of 155 and 121. This outstanding batting saw Hayley take out the Stead Rose Bowl Trophy for the most runs in the Premier Women’s club competition, and was also named the CCA Women’s Club Cricketer of the Year.

Premier Grade Women Player of the Season: JACINTA SAVAGE ______

Proud sponsors of a champion club.

ECSCC Annual Report 2012/13 Page 39

DIVISION 1 GRADE

Team structure for this season was affected by the CCA’s changes to the women’s competitions, and the numbers in the senior women’s section at East Shirley.

During the five-week provincial representative season leading up to Christmas there would be no Premiers games set by the CCA. Those Premier players not in provincial sides would play down in a separate Division One competition called the Kirsty Bond series.

The reality of numbers and player ability meant that Alyssa Millard, Jess Davidson, Olivia McGoverne, Daisy Tredinnick and Jes Costello played next to zero games in Division One, except during the new Kirsty Bond series.

For the first part of the season a Division One team led by Megan Harkerss was formed, with half of last year’s Division Two team, some players from Marist-Harewood, some former Easts women returning to the sport (Gina Aldersley and Christine Stevens (nee Wilson: she married during the season)), and some help from the junior girls. There would be no Division Two side during the season.

This team may have won only three of the eleven 35-over games, but a pleasing aspect was more game time batting and bowling for the girls who are developing their skills, especially Hannah Wills and Nani Saadbarg. They benefitted from playing in a team with a mix of ages, drawing on Nadia Healey and Halley Moore’s experience.

For the Kirsty Bond series the women not playing representative cricket were divided up according to age, with Easts Gold led by Megan and Easts Blue, basically last year’s dominant Division Two team, led by Alyssa. A feature of the series was clubs sharing players to ensure that everyone got a game every week.

The win-loss ratios in these 35-over games weren’t great at one win from five games for Gold and two wins for Blue, including beating Gold in a game that went down to the last ball. Statistics of note were Gina’s 8-2-11-5 for Blue, and JesD’s 8-1-32-5 for Gold on Burwood 2.

For the balance of the season there was a brief return to the normal Division One 35-over games, before a full round of T20. That team was led by Wendy Fuller, who scored 161 Division One runs at a 40.5 average. It was pleasing that Shannon Harrison from the Junior Section played a couple of games for the team, and contributed well. Player unavailability meant we had to borrow some welcome help from other clubs for the last few weeks of the season.

Most of the games were played on grass pitches all around the city, after years of playing on artificials at the Polo Grounds, including a few welcome home games on Burwood 2.

I am very pleased that the nucleus of the last few seasons’ Division Two sides have progressed now through to the club’s Premiers, and those girls are contributing to the Premiers very well and forming the foundation for future success. I am also pleased with all of the girls’ respect for the Spirit of the Game, and their knowledge of umpiring and scoring, and reading the game.

Some of the girls umpired in the CJCA tournaments, now that they can’t play in them, so I thank Alyssa, Olivia and JesD for giving something back to the tournament, after their years of playing in them. Daisy helped me co-coach a CJCA side, and one batting session ECSCC Annual Report 2012/13 Page 40

she gave an Ashburton girl was said by the girl’s father to be the most responsive batting session she’s ever had.

Hannah and Rachel also umpired, in the CJCA’s first South Island tournament, played at th Boys’ High (while the boys celebrated their 50 ).

I thank those who have coached the girls, including Garfield, Neville, Morna Nielsen, Megan, and the positive influences of Jacinta Savage, Venetia Stoffers and Gina at practices.

JUNIOR REPORT

2012/2013 was a good season for most teams. We again had a Premier Boys team, and I thank Peter Costello, Chris Manson, Kere Reihana and Dave Teale for all their efforts to ensure we could field this top team. Thanks also to all the other coaches and parents who coached or managed teams, and who all helped to make this a successful season. Dave and I really appreciate all of the effort that you put in during the season.

Teams We had fourteen teams this year, which was slightly down on last year. We had to combine the two girls teams into a single side - this was not ideal, and is something we have to address in the coming season. I hope all the girls come back for the new season, as we are working on trying to manage this in a better way.

We again had “Have A Go” cricket, which was well led by John Crocott and Mark Jackson. Thanks for a great job guys - this is where it all starts and what you are doing is very important. . Many of the teams had very successful seasons, with a special mention to ES 13 for going through the season without a loss and moving up a grade after Christmas. ES 7 also had a great season, winning the Walter Hadlee Memorial Shield Junior 1Day trophy –well done Al Hemingway and the team.

A few special performances are worth mentioning: very good batting from Keegan Chesney with 128*,and Regan Sheahan who had scores of 125, 66* and 80*; and we had two hat-tricks in the Kiwi Grade by Joey Pawson and Hunter Atkinson. Well done to you all.

Coaching Neville Lyons , Garfield Charles and Steve Graham again helped out with both coaching of the players and running coaching clinics for the coaches. My thanks to them.

Sponsorship We were again fortunate to have a number of sponsors this season and my thanks to Cricket Express for their generous overall sponsorship, and to O’Sheas, Subway Parklands, Shirley Hells Pizza and McDonalds for their support for the players of the day vouchers. Many thanks from all the kids, as I know they really appreciate them.

This year, we also ran two Discos, and my thanks go to Kere Reihana - not only a great coach for this club but also a great DJ . Thanks to all the parents who helped out and made the events a success. I’m hoping that we can run these again next season.

Representative players Once again, we had many talented players who trialed in various teams. Congratulations if you made a representative team: if not, don’t give up. We hope you made the most of the opportunity to further your skills which will benefit you and the club in the coming seasons.

Prize-giving This was a great success. Thanks to all for attending in great numbers, and a special mention to the parents from team ES 9 for helping to run the day. Thanks also to John Grocott for presenting all the medals. ECSCC Annual Report 2012/13 Page 43

Congratulations to you all. Amongst you there were some very notable performances.

Administration Again this year, my thanks have to go to Dave Teale. This year I was honoured with the President’s award for “greatest all round contribution” - but Dave, this one is for both of us. I hope that you will still be available next season because the club and I can’t do without you.

Thanks John for taking care of the subs for the junior section, and to all the volunteers during the year Maybe by next season we can set up a full junior committee to help spread the load and also bring in some new ideas . Thanks also to my wife Carol and my kids, Venetia and Reuben, for helping out and putting up with me.

Kia Kaha, East Shirley.

I hope to see you all back in 2013/2014.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Once again, this has been another challenging year for the club from a financial point of view. Although income is up due mainly to an increase in income from fundraising and grants, expenditure is also up with gear (mainly cricket balls) and pavilion running costs charged by Shirley Sports Club Ltd (a related party) showing substantial increases. Accordingly, the club has recorded another loss for the year, the sixth in seven years, and this remains a major concern.

As mentioned on Note 10 to the accounts, we are seeking a review of the rental arrangement with Shirley Sports Club Ltd and have requested a waiver of rent for the 2013 year. At balance date this had not been resolved and the matter is still under discussion. This year there are no funds carried forward and with the loss, the liquidity of the club has weakened.

The accounts are subject to audit at the time of writing.

The loss of $9,891 compares with a similar loss of $8,668 in the previous year. Subscriptions and other sundry income are at a similar level to 2012 and, apart from those already mentioned above, expenses are generally consistent with 2012 although there are some variations.

The statement of financial position clearly sets out the situation as at balance date. There are funds in the bank but current liabilities are well in excess of this amount. A GST recovery is due, subject to payment of amounts owing, and inventories are also up on last year. The special funds are on deposit at Cavell Leitch and earn a small amount of interest. Details are shown in the notes. Since balance date, these funds have been withdrawn from Cavell Leitch and placed on term deposit through the club.

Overall, we have managed quite well in the 2013 year but we need to obtain more income to cover our costs or we need to reduce expenditure. This is one of the reasons why we are seeking a review of the rent position. A surplus position is essential to maintain equity and cash flow. If losses continue we will eventually run out of money. This is something the incoming committee will need to address. It looks like another challenging year ahead.

The unaudited accounts of Shirley Sports Club Ltd are also included in the Annual Report. These include the rents for member clubs and show a small surplus after depreciation.

In conclusion, our thanks to the gaming trusts and Canterbury Cricket Assn for their support as set out in the notes. Also, thanks to Andy Innes of Cricket Express, Allan Stroud of O’Sheas and all others for their continued support and sponsorship. These are acknowledged in more detail elsewhere in the report. My thanks also to club members for their assistance during the year, particularly Harry Burson, Donn Leckie and Henk Stoffers for the work they do collecting subs and helping with other matters.

7 PAVILION REDEVELOPMENT & SHIRLEY SPORTS CLUB LIMITED

The Club entered into a Heads of Agreement and Joint Venture Agreement with the Shirley Rugby Football Club Inc. for the redevelopment of the existing pavilion in 2004. The project commenced in March 2005 and was completed in November 2005. Under the agreement, the pavilion is managed by the Shirley Sports Club Limited, a non-profit company established for this purpose. Each Club has equal shareholding and appoints three Directors. Under the agreement, “ownership” of the pavilion passed to the company at an agreed value and a notional gain on sale resulted. This was treated as an increase in member’s funds in the 2006 year. At balance date advances made by the Club to Shirley Sports Club Limited totalled $276,660 (last year $276,660).

SHIRLEY SPORTS CLUB LTD. (SSCL)

This has been a quiet year for the board. Progress on the possible acquisition of the Burwood Bowling Club facilities has been slow. We are still waiting on council approval for the transfer of the Bowling Club lease of the grounds before we progress the proposal any further.

Progress has also been slow on the earthquake repairs but we had a recent meeting with a new loss adjustor who had some queries over our claim which have hopefully been resolved. He is trying to speed up the claim so that we can have the repairs actioned, possibly in between the Rugby and Cricket seasons.

The only loan outstanding now is to the ChCh City Council. The balance at 31st May 2013 was $20,000 which we are paying back at $10,000 per year. Obtaining funding however is becoming harder in the current environment and this year has been particularly difficult. Both shareholder clubs are struggling to pay their rentals and a meeting with the Sports Club Board and the shareholders is to be scheduled to discuss our future direction.

Our facilities are getting tired and maintenance is required. Earthquake repairs will address some of this but the Sports Club cannot rely on bar takings alone which can be patchy, particularly over the summer months, to cover our costs. We also have to be prepared to pay for managerial help with the day to day running of the club unless some other willing volunteers are prepared to step up as both John Grocott and I wish to reduce our time commitments.

Thanks to my fellow Board members: Peter Dow, John Grocott and Steve Barry from the Cricket Club and Deane Jordan and Steve Clark from the Rugby Club and Shona Milne our Secretary.

6. ADVANCES - REDEVELOPMENT OF CLUBROOMS

The Shirley Rugby Football Club Inc and East Christchurch Shirley Cricket Club Inc have advanced funds for the redevelopment of the Clubrooms under terms set out in a Heads of Agreement and Joint Venture Agreement. The project was completed in November 2005. The advances are interest free and technically repayable on demand. However, under the agreement, repayment in the immediate future is unlikely.

7. LOANS

The term loan from the Christchurch City Council is secured by general mortgage agreements over the Company’s property and guarantees from the Shirley Rugby Football Club Inc., and East Christchurch Shirley Cricket Club Inc. The Christchurch City Council loan comprises two separate loans of $50000 each commencing December 2005 and July 2006 respectively. Initially both were repayable in annual instalments of $10000 each over 5 years. After two instalments at this rate, the terms were modified to annual instalments of $5000 each over an extended term of eight years for the remaining balance. The instalments are due in July and December. Current interest rate is 2% p.a.

8. RELATED PARTY TRANSACTIONS

The Company has related party transactions with both the Shirley Rugby Football Club Inc and the East Christchurch Shirley Cricket Club Inc. Total rent charged to the member clubs for the 2013 year ($39,000), included in receivables, reflects the amount considered appropriate by the directors to manage the company effectively. This is based on a previously agreed formula. The member clubs are seeking a review of the arrangement, including a waiver of rent for the 2013 year, and at balance date, this had not been resolved. Discussions are continuing.
