S. A. ONE OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM, KEEPER OF THE RECORDS IN THE TOWER, &c. &c. SIR, THOUGH it is certainly a presumption in me to offer this Volume to your notice, yet the many years I have been in the habit of friendship with you, as= sures me, that you will receive it, not for the worth of it, but as a mark of my grateful respect and esteem, and the more so I hope, as to you I am indebted for my first rudiments of antiquarian learning. You, Sir, first taught me those rudiments, and to your kind auspices since, I owe all I have attained to in them; for your eminence in the republic of letters, so long iv established by your justly esteemed and learned pub= lications, is such, as few have equalled, and none have surpassed; your distinguished knowledge in the va= rious records of the History of this County, as well as of the diplomatique papers of the State, has justly entitled you, through his Majesty’s judicious choice, in preference to all others, to preside over the reposi= tories, where those archives are kept, which during the time you have been entrusted with them, you have filled to the universal benefit and satisfaction of every one.

ASHER & CO., IJNTER DEN LINDEN, BERLIN. 11)08. At a Meeting of the SURTBBS SOCIETY, held in Durham Castle on Tuesday, December 3rd, 1901, the DEAN OP DURHAM in the chair, It was resolved, That a volume of North Country Wills from the Registers at Somerset House be edited for the Society by Mr. J. W. CLAY, F.S.A. WILLIAM BKOWN, Secretary. PKEFACE. THE SUETEES SOCIETY has printed a good many volumes of abstracts of Wills, more or less full, from the registries at York, Durham, and Richmond, which its members seem to have appreciated. There are, however, many wills of Northern persons proved in the Prerogative Court of Canter- bury, which are now at Somerset House, and a few in the Library at Lambeth Palace. These till lately have not been thoroughly examined, probably on account of the great labour in looking through so many manuscript calendars. " Some few were printed by Canon Raine in Testa- menta Eboracensia,"* and some short abstracts are " in .Nicolas' Testamenta Vetusta," a book which came out as long since as 1826, but which is now scarce.

In territorial terms it was a time of loss. The diocese of Ripon was founded in 1836 taking with it some of the most heavily populated new industrial regions of West Yorkshire, Bradford, Halifax and Leeds. By 1836 the archbishop had also lost his peculiar jurisdiction over Hexhamshire and in 1837 the archdeaconry of Nottingham was transferred to the diocese of Lincoln. Even though a time of territorial loss for the diocese, it was a period of increased church building. When changing expectations of the parochial role of the clergy, the demand for clerical residence and the provision of a living wage for stipendary curates and increased parochial demands for preaching and the sacraments within a broadening definition of parochial work are added to this the period is seen to be one of repeated adaptation and change. ORDINATION- THE SOURCES From the middle of the eighteenth century onwards the information recorded in the York Institution Act Books can be validated and expanded by reference to the bundles of papers submitted by the candidates themselves prior to their taking orders.
