They separate. -Ana Rossetti, “Chico Wrangler” (Translated Catherine Wheeler) Pedro Almodóvar, now the world’s most celebrated Spanish film director since Luis Buñuel, has been hailed as the poster boy for the Madrid movida, an “anything goes” cultural movement that immediately followed the death of Francisco Franco in 1975. The movida has been called an attempt to unify all people regardless of birthplace, politics, economics, and sexual identity, while in practice it pertained mostly to the middle and upper classes. After nearly forty years of extreme conservatism under Franco’s regime, the youth of Madrid reacted to its newfound creative and sexual liberty with unparalleled gusto. The movida emphasized a reversal of traditional gender roles, sexual experimentation, and drug use. By its end in the mid 1980s, politicians had embraced the movida as Madrid’s new, post-fascism identity (Stapell). This political institutionalization of an originally pseudo anarchistic movement signified the death of the period of extreme self-liberation. The movida petered out by the mid 1980s, largely due to the spread of AIDS and movida members’ rampant drug use.

El primero se halla naturalmente en Valencia: el de la Virgen de los Desam- parados (1652)» (p. 87). Es confuso el sentido que el autor quiere dar a ese «naturalmente». No es siempre fácil mantener la distinción entre arquitectura y escultura, así las referencias múltiples a que la separación obli- ga pueden confundir al lector, como, por ejemplo, la simple atri- bución a Hipólito Rovira del palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas (p. 88). En efecto, Rovira, pintor, concibió y dibujó la fachada pintada, pero la realización en alabastro de su magnífico portal (17 40-17 44) se debe al escultor valenciano Ignacio Vergara (cf. p. 188). La falta de un índice de nombres hace difícil el uso selectivo de la información contenida en estos estudios. Y resulta irritante para el lector la falta de calidad del papel que deja que la tinta pase al reverso de la página.

Revista de Ciencias de la Comunicación e Información, Vol. 26, 39-57. http://doi.org/10.35742/rcci.2021.26.e138 ABSTRACT In recent years, the Goya Awards have become a stage for the claims of the Spanish film sector due to the media coverage of the gala. Based on a methodological triangulation that applies case studies, content analysis, and in-depth interviews, this research proposes a new categorization of female archetypes in current Spanish cinema, proves the existence of gender discrimination through the stereotypical representation of women, and analyses whether these archetypes are also perpetuated and disseminated through high-end women's magazines and Sunday supplements. The main conclusion of this study is that the creation of a protectionist law to put an end to this marginalization is essential and a debt from Spain's historical and political past. Spanish Cinema After Franco At BFI Southbank in June 2011 The death of Spain’s long term dictator Francisco Franco in 1975 gave rise to an alternative, adventurous and eclectic movement within Spanish culture that is reflected its filmmaking. BFI Southbank, throughout May, mounts a season celebrating the birth of this exciting period of cinema and features an extended run of the BFI release, Cria Cuervos (Raise Ravens, 1975) as well as screenings of both well known examples of the era, such as Pedro Almodóvar’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios, 1998), alongside lesser known titles including The Anchorite (El anacoreta, 1977) and Opera Prima (1980). The lifting of censorship following Franco’s demise brought with it the birth of a filmmaking generation unleashed from a climate of repression, approaching subjects that couldn’t have been mentioned before: sex, drugs, homosexuality, politics and all with an innovative, free spirit that brought together filmmakers, professional and amateur actors, designers and musicians. From late 1975 to the end of the 80s, when democracy had already consolidated in the country, emerged the movement which has come to be known as ‘la Movida Madrileña’, which saw such talents as Pedro Almodóvar and Iván Zulueta emerge in the field of cinema. The Movida was mainly a music movement to which many young bands from the capital contributed but, with mottos like ‘Madrid nunca duerme’ (‘Madid never sleeps’) or ‘¡Esta noche todo el mundo a la calle!’ (‘Everybody in the street tonight!’) – its spirit extended to other fields such as film, television, photography, fashion, comics and fanzines.

By examining the influence of Franco’s censorship on the film industry, this paper will analyze how his censorship affected the changes that took place in cinema after his death by analyzing the films of Pedro Almodóvar. The first part of this paper focuses on the censorship measures that were put into place by Franco’s regime. The paper also examines what genres were popular during Franco’s era and how the regime attempted to manipulate the film industry in order to promote its fascist ideology. The paper goes on to discuss several directors who challenged Franco’s censorship and the Franco myth, the messages and themes that were promoted by that state in fascist films.
