THE PRODUCTION OF TV MOVIES HAS PROVED TO BE A FERTILE BREEDING GROUND FOR NEW TALENT, IN WHICH SCRIPTWRITERS, ACTORS, DIRECTORS AND PRO- DUCERS ALIKE PUT THEIR CREATIVE STRENGTHS TO THE TEST IN A GENRE CHARACTERIZED BY ITS IMMEDIACY AND FLEXIBILITY.

The most remarkable aspect of TV movies is that they have embraced almost the full gambit of themes, though they have perhaps found their greatest area of growth in biopics and news or factbased stories. This is the legacy the Catalan film and television industry took up very few years ago, and it has since gone on to create a burgeoning portfolio of TV movie titles.

Over 50 titles have been broadcast in dedicated slots on Televisió de Catalunya, some involving new approaches to co-production. This catalogue brings together the most recent crop, conceived with a view to accessing all possible sales channels: theatrical release, theme channels, satellite, etc. In brief, these are high-quality productions which are attracting the interest and the applause of their home audiences and are set to do the same on the international market.

Carla allows little room for chance. A charming, headstrong young woman, she likes to plan her life rather than leave it to chance. She's achieved a lot already: a great husband, a big house, a comfortable life. But what she wants most of all is a child – and she’s arranged for that, too. On her way to Quito to adopt a child, Carla suddenly finds herself in Barcelona, on the run with a charming young artist named Raul and a painting he stole from Berlin museum. When the painting is re-stolen by thugs, Carla and Raul are in double trouble. The least of their problems is the pair of policemen chasing them: Antonio, a gentlemanly Catalan police inspector and Kurt his coarse, bumbling Berlin colleague. The real problem is the master criminal who commissioned Raul to steal the painting and who wants it delivered - now. To prove the point he kidnaps Raul’s sister. Up to her neck in big time criminal exploits, Carla puts her plans for a perfect life on hold – though she’s not giving up on that child in Quito....

Victoria has just found out she has only a short time to live and her main concern is to sort out her teenage son Mauro’s future. After years of estrangement from her ex-husband, Salinas, who is Mauro's father and a renowned musician, Victoria contacts him to propose selling the house they own jointly in Galicia, named Atlantis, in order to leave her son with some funds behind him. Victoria decides to tell her son about her illness, but Mauro, incapable of coming to terms with his mother's having to die, takes refuge in the self-interested protection of his father.

The relationship between mother and son deteriorates little by little. Mauro runs away to La Coruña, where he discovers the lies and wretchedness of his father. When Victoria goes to fetch Mauro at the house she and Salinas had once shared, they finally reconcile the past and father and son agree to settle their differences and allow Victoria to live her last months in peace.

Buying beauty

Diario de una miss

20

A TV movie based on the exposé carried out by the production company El Mundo TV, specialised in investigative journalism, regarding fraudulent practices committed by some beauty contests.

The production company managed to infiltrate the contest organised by the Alicante delegation for the Miss Spain contest using a female reporter with a hidden camera. For a modest amount of money, the journalists, claiming to be from a fashion company, managed to buy the title of Miss Alicante, which was awarded, despite complaints, to the reporter/false Miss.

Taking the investigation further, the female reporter went on to compete against the winners of the other Spanish provinces in the final of the Miss Spain contest. Negotiations commenced to buy the national title, but the reporter was unmasked before the fraud reached conclusion. However, during the contest she lived in a hotel with all the other contestants and, using a hidden camera, managed to film the living conditions of the participants, who seem to be kept in a golden cage, as well as the scams of the organisers, who were always ready to use the contestants for their private concerns, constantly treating them as mere pieces of merchandise or simply as cattle, in the worst chauvinistic tradition, and continually exhibiting them as a lure for businessmen and other individuals close to the contest and the organisers.

A young woman, Alba, loses her only daughter. The most serious after-effect for Alba, as well as all the psychological damage and the guilt that consumes her, is her temporary loss of hearing.

Isolated from the world, Alba finds she is able to hear sounds, which little by little turn into voices. Except that these voices are fragments of conversations with people who are already dead. One voice stands out amongst all the others, and invades every corner of her home and her nights, the voice of a girl.

From the back of my mind

Racons de la memòria

28

Dani is a man in his fifties who has cancer and has to undergo surgery with no guarantee of success. The lack of certainty and the severity of the treatment lead him to doubt whether to go ahead with the operation, until the world of the memory surfaces from the back of his mind and helps him to muster up the optimism to carry on.

Flash back to 1964. At the age of sixteen, Dani is living in a small town with his authoritarian father and classic mother. At school, the boy awakens to new experiences under the influence of his progressive teacher and anarchist grandfather. At the end of high school, he doesn’t want to go to the city: he wants to be a writer. His teacher shows an interest in catching up with him in the future to see how things have worked out.

2005. Dani, now a disillusioned porn writer in crisis, remembers his date with his former teacher, the date with his memory. Despite a disappointing meeting with the teacher and, in some way, with his past, Dani does have the operation, confident of success and with the support of his girlfriend, Anna.

Rated Equis: American Reactions to the Films of Pedro Almodóvar Honors College Thesis Catherine Wheeler Advisor: Tina Escaja Spanish Department University of Vermont Introduction Sweet heart of mine suddenly attacked. All for loving more than the permissible. All because a cigar sits in a mouth And dampens in its succulent silks. Because a provocative T-shirt points out On his chest, the sculpted shield, And a vigorous arm peeks from the smallest sleeve. All because some legs, some perfect legs, In the tightest pants, separate in front of me. They separate. -Ana Rossetti, “Chico Wrangler” (Translated Catherine Wheeler) Pedro Almodóvar, now the world’s most celebrated Spanish film director since Luis Buñuel, has been hailed as the poster boy for the Madrid movida, an “anything goes” cultural movement that immediately followed the death of Francisco Franco in 1975. The movida has been called an attempt to unify all people regardless of birthplace, politics, economics, and sexual identity, while in practice it pertained mostly to the middle and upper classes. After nearly forty years of extreme conservatism under Franco’s regime, the youth of Madrid reacted to its newfound creative and sexual liberty with unparalleled gusto. The movida emphasized a reversal of traditional gender roles, sexual experimentation, and drug use. By its end in the mid 1980s, politicians had embraced the movida as Madrid’s new, post-fascism identity (Stapell). This political institutionalization of an originally pseudo anarchistic movement signified the death of the period of extreme self-liberation. The movida petered out by the mid 1980s, largely due to the spread of AIDS and movida members’ rampant drug use.

Revista de Ciencias de la Comunicación e Información, Vol. 26, 39-57. http://doi.org/10.35742/rcci.2021.26.e138 ABSTRACT In recent years, the Goya Awards have become a stage for the claims of the Spanish film sector due to the media coverage of the gala. Based on a methodological triangulation that applies case studies, content analysis, and in-depth interviews, this research proposes a new categorization of female archetypes in current Spanish cinema, proves the existence of gender discrimination through the stereotypical representation of women, and analyses whether these archetypes are also perpetuated and disseminated through high-end women's magazines and Sunday supplements. The main conclusion of this study is that the creation of a protectionist law to put an end to this marginalization is essential and a debt from Spain's historical and political past. KEYWORDS: Spanish Cinema, Goya Awards, women, gender stereotypes, demands. Spanish Cinema After Franco at BFI Southbank in June 2011

PRESS RELEASE MAY 2011 11/33 Good Morning Freedom! Spanish Cinema After Franco At BFI Southbank in June 2011 The death of Spain’s long term dictator Francisco Franco in 1975 gave rise to an alternative, adventurous and eclectic movement within Spanish culture that is reflected its filmmaking. BFI Southbank, throughout May, mounts a season celebrating the birth of this exciting period of cinema and features an extended run of the BFI release, Cria Cuervos (Raise Ravens, 1975) as well as screenings of both well known examples of the era, such as Pedro Almodóvar’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios, 1998), alongside lesser known titles including The Anchorite (El anacoreta, 1977) and Opera Prima (1980). The lifting of censorship following Franco’s demise brought with it the birth of a filmmaking generation unleashed from a climate of repression, approaching subjects that couldn’t have been mentioned before: sex, drugs, homosexuality, politics and all with an innovative, free spirit that brought together filmmakers, professional and amateur actors, designers and musicians. From late 1975 to the end of the 80s, when democracy had already consolidated in the country, emerged the movement which has come to be known as ‘la Movida Madrileña’, which saw such talents as Pedro Almodóvar and Iván Zulueta emerge in the field of cinema. The Movida was mainly a music movement to which many young bands from the capital contributed but, with mottos like ‘Madrid nunca duerme’ (‘Madid never sleeps’) or ‘¡Esta noche todo el mundo a la calle!’ (‘Everybody in the street tonight!’) – its spirit extended to other fields such as film, television, photography, fashion, comics and fanzines.

By examining the influence of Franco’s censorship on the film industry, this paper will analyze how his censorship affected the changes that took place in cinema after his death by analyzing the films of Pedro Almodóvar. The first part of this paper focuses on the censorship measures that were put into place by Franco’s regime. The paper also examines what genres were popular during Franco’s era and how the regime attempted to manipulate the film industry in order to promote its fascist ideology. The paper goes on to discuss several directors who challenged Franco’s censorship and the Franco myth, the messages and themes that were promoted by that state in fascist films.

Dir Pedro Almodóvar. With Emma Suárez, Adriana Ugarte, Rossy de Palma, Inma Cuesta. 99min. Digital. EST. 15 A ravishing study of love and loss from one of contemporary cinema’s great auteurs. For his twentieth feature, Almodóvar returns to the more sombre tone of The Flower of My Secret, rendering an exquisite study of a mother-daughter relationship tested through trying times. Adapted from three short stories by the Canadian Nobel Prize-winner Alice Munro, Julieta tells of a classics teacher struggling with past secrets and the consequences of her romance with Xoan, a Galician fisherman she meets on a train in 1985. Employing a non- linear structure to bold effect, Julieta is a mesmerising film highlighting how little we might know about ourselves and those we hold most dear.
