NOTE 2: Thanks to Chuck Kiesling in Oct 12, Collett Association records now include the 1968 Personnel Diaries.

NOTE 3: Per Chuck Kiesling in 2010, there were 116 shipmates on board for the entire year of 1968, however, per the PD, 227 shipmates served for some time during the year.

NOTE 4: Prompted by Bill Steshko’s remembrance of a particular typhoon, several other shipmates recalled that one and others in 1968: * In Jan 1968 we spent 30 days in the Sea of Japan after the North Koreans captured the Pueblo. We encountered some very severe weather there. Several life rafts were lost and washed ashore in Japan leading local newspapers to report COLLETT as having been sunk. That storm also did some damage topside to lifelines and even tore one gangway ladder off the side of the ship – Bill Craig, LTJG * If my memory serves me right, which it doesn't always do, we were headed to Subic from Yankee Station when the storm first popped up. We turned and headed to Yokosuka but the storm (or another one) blocked our path there. I sort of remember getting down to a critical fuel stage, below 50%, before we were finally able to refuel from a tanker – Clark Matthews, RM3 * If my memory serves me correctly, it was the day after we left Pearl Harbor, we were steaming with the USS . We pulled up next to her and they filled us as full of water and fuel as they could to give us more ballast. We also lost all the controls in the Bridge so had to use aft steering all the way to Subic Bay. It was a heck of a ride. We lived in the DASH hanger so we'd poke our head out occasionally and watch the CORAL SEA, who's flight deck in 90 feet off the water, go under many times. These details have always stuck with me – Swede Michaelson, ATN2 * I was aboard the COLLETT when we encountered a typhoon. We had saved shell casings from firing missions and used them to have the COLLETT repainted in Hong Kong. We were in Hong Kong for 5 days and got liberty. We headed out and hit the typhoon (I do not remember where we were headed) and the typhoon knocked off all the paint and did a lot of other damage. That was in 1968 because we came back to the states in Oct 68 via Australia and New Zealand – Ken Glover, PN3 * I recall a typhoon when steaming from Hong Kong to Yokosuka, our homeport. The Collett was taking water over the bridge (troughing). We tried to circumvent the storm south of Japan on several attempts to get through it. During this ordeal all weather decks were secured; the crew remained in their berthing compartments; and chow was delivered to the crew from the galley. My service was Mar 66 thru Apr 68, and the time of interest would be in that window – John Dickson, ETN2 * I can't remember the time frame but I remember quite a few tied themselves into their racks. I want to say someone fell out of their rack at night and broke an arm or something – David Poynter, GMG3 * I recall that event and many other storms that were very high winds and huge seas. You could feel the hull flex at the expansion joints and barely get chow down if you could keep your tray and coffee cup on the table as the ship did some amazing acrobatics! – Dave Caron, STG3 * My memory was that we ran from a storm for 5 days. Bounced from one port to another. My rack in supply was forward. The supplies and records were aft. The Radar gang needed an item and the trip aft required me to walk on the lockers and not trip over the handles or the door dogs – Ewell Andrews, SK3 * We never lost the flag bags while I was aboard Jun 66 – Aug 68. Being a Signalman I would have remembered that! I never heard of it happening to any ship. The SM scuttlebutt machine would have spread that around the fleet quick – Al Burke, SM2 * We also had some very heavy weather in the Tasman Sea in August 1968 in transit from Brisbane, Australia, to Wellington, New Zealand. We took one roll of 58 degrees which tumbled the gyrocompass leaving us to finish our voyage with only the magnetic compass – Bill Craig, LTJG
