Goulburn Pam Tippett’s exhibition

Regional The new exhibition, entitled Pam Tippett a Survey Exhibition, features recent still lifes as Art Gallery well as a selection of earlier works including interiors, portraits and drawings.

2013 ARCHIBALD PRIZE REGIONAL TOUR She has been living in the Goulburn district for An Art Gallery of exhibition the last 10 years and is known for her beautiful toured by Museums & Galleries NSW still life works as well as her landscapes and portraits. She was selected as a finalist for the Archibald Award in 2011 with a self portrait.

Curator Angela D’Elia said the two things that immediately strike the viewer of Pam Tippett’s art works are that she is a perfectionist and she has the enviable skill to satisfy her perfectionism.

Along with the many still lifes in this exhibition are also a number of self portraits, interiors, drawings and nudes. The drawings show Tippett’s excellent skills as a draftsman - the light-filled rooms of her interiors have attractive details and colour schemes. There is much to admire and praise in the work of Pam Tippett and it is an exhibition which should fascinate its viewers.

WINDELLAMA PROGRESS ASSOC. HALL Inc.

It has been a busy time at the hall recently, with the annual P & C fireworks and auction and several functions, both large and small, which we have catered for.

DID YOU KNOW that the proponents of Ardmore Park Quarry at Bungonia are seeking to amend the approved haul route by a variation to allow them to use Oallen Ford Road and Windellama Road to cart up to 20,000 tonnes per year? They are proposing a 5 ½ day working week, 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 1pm Saturday. This will put a large number of truck movements on a road that has trouble coping with the “light” traffic using it at present. It will also put trucks on the roads at the same time as the three school buses.

This matter has been listed for discussion at the Goulburn Mulwaree Council Outreach Meeting to be held at Windellama Hall on Tuesday 9th July commencing at 6.30 p.m. All members of the local community are urged to attend and put forward your point of view.

According to the proposal prepared by the quarry proponents, they claim to be conducting meetings with community members during May 2013, however the Windellama Progress Association has had no contact with them at all.

Preparations for this year’s Field Day are well in hand and the prospectus will be going out within the next week or so. This is our 20th year and we are looking forward to a bigger and better event.

The Progress Association meets on the third Monday of each month at 2 p.m. at the hall. All members of the community are welcome to attend. Look forward to seeing you there.

Well I cannot for the life of me see where the year has gone.

The building, has at long last been constructed as all who pass by there can plainly see. The interior is being fitted out as I write. It will however be a short while before it is finalised. Then of course will come the rehabilitation of the surrounding area. There is to be a concrete apron put out in front of the building so as to keep that area stable. The delay in building, turned out to be in our favour after all, proving that all good things come to those who wait.

There was unfortunately some callouts for our people during the last few weeks. You are fortunate to have those dedicated people in your area.

Who knows the sight of that building may spur some people into becoming active in the C.F.R. You must have certain training in the S.E.S. before you are eligible to join our unit. I have pointed this out on many previous occasions.

We were advised last night by the Ambulance Representative that the next C.F.R. intake will most probably take place in late October or early November, 2013. So if you have time to be in that group my 'phone number is 4844 7143, I can drop the application forms around to you when required. K Muffet

A 20 or so strong group of Willow Glen Gardeners gathered together on the deck of John and Carolyn’s beautiful weekender for our June monthly meeting. With a lot of hard work, Carolyn’s strong eye for detail and John’s abilities to bring her visions to life- the couple have created an idealistic country style retreat in which to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. As we settled in for our meeting, well wishes went out to some of the group unable to attend due to illness, we discussed our horticultural trials and tribulations and of course enjoyed the coffee and delicious cakes on offer. We finished our morning tea and embarked on our garden tour, led by Carolyn, who walked us through her majestic wooden entry gates towards the garden proper. Silver birch trees stood regally beside us, their winter skeletons appearing almost like sculptures against their metallic background. Masses of spring bulbs planted below were beginning to push their way up through the mulch and toward the warm rays of winter sunshine. The garden has been designed tastefully and with full complement to the surrounding environment. Plantings which include an array of roses, deciduous trees, hedging plants and hardy salvias were carefully chosen to accommodate our rather testing cold climate conditions. Heading up a garden path swathed in seaside daisies, we admired the healthy looking mixed fruit orchard and newly developed flower beds before our gazes were drawn to the grand finale- a beautiful view of undulating green slopes rolling down toward a little island in the large dam below. Breathtaking. Our next meeting will be a get together / working bee at St Barts Church in Windellama on Tuesday July 2nd, we plan to clean up a bit around the grave stones and generally weed and tidy the gardens. Please bring a chair and a plate to share and if you have some small weeding tools they would be useful too.

Tarago Rockquiz – Our Tribute to the late and great Chrissy Amphlett

It was with both Pleasure and Pain that I greeted Rockquizzers at the Tarago Hall on Saturday 25th May for Round 3 of Tarago Rockquiz. Pleasure as it was a fundraiser for the Hall and we raised over $600 for the night and Pain as it was a tribute to one of my favourite Australian Rock legends Chrissy Amphlett. I grew up with Chrissy and the Divinyls and so when one of our locals suggested with have a tribute night on hearing of her recent passing we leaped at the chance to honour her.

Our Tarago Rockquiz is based on the SBS hit show RockWiz and the rounds of questions are similar with in the inclusion of Million Dollar Riff, General Knowledge, Know the Tune and the end questions which we call the Frantic Fifteen. In this round as a tribute to Chrissy and Divinyls we devoted a whole round to see if the teams knew Chrissy as well as Brian knew Chrissy. Our Rockquiz orchestra were the fabulous Smokestack Lightning who went on to rock the hall after the quiz. The band was so generous to accompany many of the acts in our Pay or Play round where we were treated to a vast array of local talent in their attempt to gain as many points as possible.

The winning team on the night who gain legend status with an entry on the coveted Golden Guitar was a made up team on the night of 2 Jerrabomberians, 1 Goulburnite and our own local girl Vicki Bowes who named their team Monkees as they happened to have The Monkees 45 record on their table as part of our decorations. They were closely followed by the very knowledgeable music team the Windy Llamas from Windellama who fought them neck and neck to the finish. The team The Winners were indeed grinners when they finished last and were awarded the Chrissy Amphlett Favourite selection of Twisties, White Knights, Violet Crumbles and Cherry Ripes her favourie Aussie lollies and snack food.

The Chrissy LookALike award was taken out by our Rockquizette Samantha Brown who had the schoolgirl outfit and pout down to a tee. Sam went home with the coveted Chrissy trophy and a fabulous Reese Witherspoon pack generously donated by Chris Burns. It was fantastique to see so many people enter into the dress up stage with sassy schoolgirls (and boys too), lots of wigs of many different colours and curls and lots of dancing to the great tunes laid down by the band. Many thanks to all the people who helped before, on and after the night, it was a truly rocking good night and we couldn’t do it without your help.

Our next round will be on 12th October 2013 be there or miss out on all the fun as we will be having a Blues Brothers revival. So watch the movies, grab your suit and sunglasses and get to know a penguin, cos you’ll be on a mission from God. Bonne chance! Neil (Brian) and Gill (Julia) Shepherd

Windellama Marble Quarry

Black marble had evidentially been discovered at Windellama around 1882 as a quarry reserve was set aside on 6 November 1882. It was located on a portion of land then called Portion 141, Parish Yarralaw. The land in question was later given Portion number 278. A small article in the Goulburn Evening Penny Post of 15 February 1890 gives details of the establishment of the quarry

Marble Quarry at Windellama. Mr. Jagueal, a Sydney gentleman, is at present engaged in opening up a quarry of black marble on Mr. Croker's land at Windellama. A saw-mill with the necessary apparatus has been placed on the ground, and some large blocks of a couple of tons weight have already been taken out. The marble is said to be equal to the famous Kilkenny marble. If the enterprise is attended with success we may expect that important buildings which may be erected in Goulburn in the future may be embellished with the noble material. (Goulburn Evening Penny Post 15 February 1890)

After Federation of the states in 1901, several sites, including Goulburn were being investigated as a possible site for the National Capital. An enquiry was held in Goulburn on 8 May 1900 into what the area could offer for a National Capital. Among those giving evidence were Mr Conolly- flour miller, EC Manfred-architect, WJ Bartlett-brewer and Mr James Turner-monumental mason who talked of the location of stone for building and mentions the marble at Windellama.

The quarry was located at the junction of the junction of the Buburba and Windellama creeks not far from Buburba homestead.

He also mentions that Windellama marble was used in the large hall at the university in Sydney. In 1900 at a meeting in Windellama regarding the proposed Marulan to Braidwood railway line, Mr Gegg said the railway would benefit the area with its rich deposits of minerals, limestone and marble. The rail was still being talked about in 1908 and marble was again mentioned as something that could be sent away by rail. As Turners monumental masons mentioned earlier operated for a considerable time it is more than likely that some of the black marble headstones in cemeteries in the area came from Windellama. An example of the marble can be seen at the Windellama Museum. Tom Bryant

In Your July Garden From Irene Turner

This month tidy up the garden, remove all the diseased plants, (don`t place any diseased plants in your compost), put them in a garbage bag and bin them.

Rose and fruit trees can be planted now, always prune the top of the fruit trees when planting, to help the roots get established, and water in with seasol.

Deciduous flowering trees and shrubs can be moved and planted now. Some varieties that grow well in our areas are;- prunus, flowering cherry, crab apple, flowering peach, lilac, laburnum, vossi (golden chain tree) and pink and red hawthorn. Larger trees are liquidambar, box elder, golden elm, claret and golden ash and silver birch. Weeping varieties are:- cherry, crab apple, elm, mulberry, Japanese maples.

You can prune your roses at this time- I prefer to prune early August.

VEGETABLES

Sow broad beans seeds, peas, and all varieties of onions. Plant rhubarb and asparagus crowns. Plant strawberries, also prune off diseased leaves and dig in some com- post and old manure (not chicken manure it contains too much lime). You can plant the strawberry runners.

FLOWERS Seedling of:- stocks, viola, primula, wallflower, russell lupins, delphiniums, foxglove, poppies, sweet William , calendula, alyssum, snapdragons, verbena, dianthus. Sow seed of Virginian stock directly in the soil, makes a lovely border.

GARLIC Plant cloves now in good soil, garlic is a good companion plant for roses, help to keep bugs away. Health benefits: Containing more than 25 antioxidants, garlic helps to strengthen the immune systems, calm in- flammation and can also mildly lower bad cholesterol and blood pressure. Use it sliced, diced or grated cloves into dishes or bake whole. It`s also great in sauces, risottos, casseroles and roasts. Medicinal; use as an antibiotic, to cleanse blood, clear catarrh, take as protection against com- mon colds worms, dysentery and typhoid.

Garlic spray for aphids Use two crushed cloves of garlic for each 570 ml of water. Soak the garlic cloves in half a cup of vegetable oil for a few days, add 1 teaspoon of detergent, strain then add to the water. Place in a spray bottle. Make as needed.

Report From Windellama News AGM These past twelve months as always have been busy ones. We have seen in the last few months delivery members discontinue for various reasons, but others have stepped up to the plate, which says something about this wonderful community. Welcome to Graham & Christine Woodcock and John Robinson.

The loss of our Secretary/Treasurer (Cathy Meehan) has been a great loss to our small team. At present we have 3 signatories still available – Gayle Stanton, Gary Johnson, Denise Johnson. John Pearce and Warren Yates have offered to be extra signatories. We now have internet access to bank account, view only, to monitor payments.

We have opened a post office box (705) at Goulburn Post Office to receive mail & cheques. This will alleviate present and future changes of office bearers, and to our letterhead information and also for security purposes.

We are managing to create a small surplus each month. Part of this money, as agreed by the team previously, is to be spent to assist SES/CFR to supply some hard fittings for their shed once erected. Supply of fittings is being negotiated at present with SES Goulburn who control fit out of the shed. Bookwork and bank statements were then tabled for perusal. Average monthly income currently covers the costs of printing & mail out

I would like to publicly thank Cathy Meehan, Pat Freebairn, and Sam Daniels, Brian & Maree Elliott for all their help, ideas, and for their sense of community in previously donating their time.

A great big vote of thanks to Dave Edworthy for allowing us to have our monthly edition on the web, which most of our readers now access in full colour. A special mention to Gayle and all the volunteer delivery members, whom without them each month, this newsletter would not be possible. Also a vote of thanks goes to all the regular contributors who make our newsletter interesting. And lastly to our advertisers, a great big thank you for supporting your community, especially in these financial times, for without them we would not have this community newsletter.

The Windellama News still manages itself autonomously and still operates in the black without any subsidies. Although we don’t physically produce the newsletter, the costs of production are certainly minimal in comparison, and are surely charged at a special rate from Roger McLaughlin at Business Requisites.

Subscriptions currently $20 for 11 issues. Current costings are comprised of envelopes $0.09, newsletter $0.80, postage $1.20 monthly. This totals $23.00 for 11 issues. A vote was then taken and an annual subscription fee of $25 was agreed upon and will take effect from September 2013

Colour printing costings were then discussed; it was then agreed to have front page in colour for the December issue printed in colour at an added cost of approx $170.

Layout of pages were then discussed – introduction of advertisers business listing. Also mentioned by editors that advertisers’ pages were rotated each month so that no one advertiser had a certain position.

Annual Award at Windellama Public School for literacy was discussed and agreed to. A voucher of $50 each from Town & Country Book Shop for 1 infants and 1 primary student. Also a medallion from Goulburn Trophys to go with the voucher. All now organised Denise Johnson, Editor.

Joy E Allenby-Acuna ALPACAS - Anecdotes & Advice La Granja Holistic Alpacas

Last weekend we had 28 mls of rain and it was terrific, there is a mist of green now. We had very little over the autumn..

Girl and boy alpacas have just had their winter ADE and CLO in the last few days. Given in a syringe by mouth. Misty always has hers first, as then she is taken by surprise as she is soooo twitchy.!!

Heroides has planted the winter vegie patch with winter greens, garlic and broad beans. Orchard trees and others have been mulched with Alpaca poo and poplar leaves.

All my plants in the sun room are growing apace and I have cyclamen flowers and have had hyacinths and three huge plump buds are coming on my orchid. Seaweed meal or seaweed emulsion is the best thing I find to feed indoor plants (not in this season of course).

I have got Mbale right where he popped his hip joint out with Arnica, Glucosomate and massage. Now Monty has sprained his toes on one foot but that is getting better. I think he has played too much football. He loves a game every afternoon with me and several footballs and is better than George Best was, but I think this is how he did the injury.

It is very strange in this household, we all get leg problems and always have since living at la Granja.

Happy winter fires and stews.!!

Namaste. Joy. Alpaca compassionate carer
