Congratulations Windellama SES First Aid & CFR April will soon be upon us, and with it will come three wonderful people, who have said they will join our C.F.R. unit. This will give us a good amount of relief, and will increase our S.E.S. membership in the area.

We of the Windellama S.E.S. Team, wish to thank the Windellama News Team, for their very generous donation of the Flat Pack for our building. Sincere thanks to you.

If the names look familiar, it's because we were fortunate enough to have the same members step up this year as in 2013. Many thanks to each of them, and to all who took the time to attend the meeting.

With the AGM out of the way, our attention has now turned to organising the annual auction and fireworks. This year it will be held from 2pm on Saturday 7 June which of course, is the Saturday of the long weekend. Put it in your diary now!

WINDELLAMA PROGRESS ASSOC. HALL Inc.

REPORT FROM THE PROGRESS ASSOCIATION

The next function to be held at the hall will be the annual Bush Fire Brigade Auction Day, which will be on Saturday 12th April. Hopefully the weather will be kind and the day will be a successful one.

Don’t forget the monthly markets which are held at Windellama Hall on the third Sunday of each month 9 am to 1 pm. There is a huge variety of goods for sale and of course there is the great food and drinks Windellama is famous for.

I hope you have all taken note of the centre lines on Oallen Ford Road from Sandy Point to the Shoalhaven River. The Progress Association lobbied Council for a marker to show all our interstate drivers which side of the road they should be driving on and they came through beautifully. Perhaps there will not be so many near misses on the blind corners now.

We are starting to plan for this year’s field day and shall be holding a meeting at the hall on Monday 14th April at 2 p.m. We hope to welcome new faces with new ideas this year. Please lend us your support.

The Progress Association meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 2pm. All community members are welcome at our meetings.

After weeks of organising our Art, Craft & Flower Show, it was quite successful. We had gorgeous needlework on show in the craft, flowers in their sections were just beautiful and lovely cooking to die for. The school children’s contribution was great also, flowers and vegie figures. Our only disappointment was that not enough people came on the day to see all this.

THE HOTELS OF WINDELLAMA.

Very little is now known of the hotels that were in the Windellama area. The majority of these ho- tels were in connection with the mining in the Spa and Spring Creek areas. I have listed all the hotels that I have any information on but there would be others, possibly unlicensed. On the goldfields you would expect that anyone could set up an establishment in a tent or makeshift building and move on when the mining shifted to another area or be gone alto- gether if word got around that an inspector was about. For this list I must lean heavily on the publication “Rural Inns of the Goulburn District 1830- 1900” that was put together by Bill Gilbert and Mick Wilson of the Goulburn District Historical Soci- ety in 1989. Both of these men have since passed on but have left us the fruits of their research. I quote directly from that publication.

Willowglen Gardeners http://www.whispersfromwillowglen.blogspot.com

Our March Garden club meeting was held on a beautiful morning at Meg and Tom’s and we all assembled to a great morning tea – essential preface to our tour of their garden. The view from the verandah is stunning!

As Warren was absent, Judy took his place and chaired the meeting. Mentioned were the Spinners and Weavers Exhibition taking place that weekend and the Rose Festival, which we hope were a big success. The Goulburn Show is on at the end of March and we are sure many will visit.

Judy mentioned that Maggie Durack needs someone to mow her lawn. If anyone is interested, or knows someone who would be interested, please contact Judy or Warren for more details.

Ron is recovering well from his hip operation and will soon be dancing around again. Thoreen has offered to have the Melbourne Cup meeting at their place in November.

Tom is working away on a retaining wall which looks very impressive and says “The Girl” is happy with it (see photo)! They are planning a gazebo too.

We had an interesting walk around the garden – Meg has made many little gardens around various trees – she has to outwit the sheep, roos and rabbits, and has done a marvellous job. More of these protected gardens are on the drawing board.

Next meeting is at Judy and Warren’s on 1st April 2014.

Happy Gardening All! Ni Reed
